I Built an AI Tarot Demo in Two Hours. Shipping the Product Was a Different Job.

A working AI demo and a shippable product are separated by state, failure handling, privacy and a question no code answers: will anyone come back? That is the lesson in a DEV Community retrospective by On Pounch Man, builder of Mystic Journey, an AI tarot app. The author writes, “With AI assistance, the basic flow worked in about two hours.” Most of the retrospective covers what came after.

This article walks through that account: what the author says they built, which problems appeared once saved data entered the picture, and which questions stayed open. Everything here is the author’s self-reported experience. It is not an audit, and it offers no benchmark for how long AI-assisted builds take in general.

What the two-hour demo was, and why it wasn’t enough

The first version was a single page: a deck, a card-flip animation and an AI-written interpretation. The user asked a question, drew cards and read the result. The author’s conclusion was that a general-purpose AI can already explain tarot cards, so animation alone gave nobody a reason to return.

The two-hour figure is one builder’s estimate for one basic flow. It isn’t a controlled comparison, and the retrospective doesn’t present it as a typical timeline.

The Rider Tarot Deck®: The Authentic Rider-Waite® Tarot Deck with Instruction Booklet, Essential for Tarot Beginners & Expert Readers
  • 78 Cards
  • Rider Waite Tarot has set the standard for hundreds of other tarot decks
  • Rider Waite Tarot was named one of the Top Ten Tarot Decks of All Time by Aeclectic Tarot.

How the product changed to give people a reason to return

The author added the following, and describes each as a hypothesis, not a proven retention gain:

  • Daily card ritual: a mood-based daily card with a reflection prompt.
  • Six guided themes: space, boundaries, change, confidence, connection and direction, each with five short chapters and optional personal notes.
  • Journey timeline: a personal record of completed rituals, explorations and saved readings.
  • Weekly companion board: opt-in, showing names, avatars and activity points but not private reflections. The author still wants feedback on whether it feels supportive.

The reported stack is Nuxt 3 with static generation for the frontend, a separate Fastify API, SQLite, DeepSeek for generated readings, and Nginx routing API traffic. The stated reasoning is that the author can deploy and troubleshoot it at the project’s current scale.

What happens when someone switches devices?

A daily card is throwaway in a demo. Once it connects to reflections, history or rewards, it is account data, and the author wants the same record on phone and laptop. That raises concurrency problems a single-session demo never meets.

KLEDERY Tarot Cards for Beginners, Classic Tarot Deck with Meanings, Durable Cards with Guide Book, Black
  • Historic Classic - This beginner tarot deck is based on the classic Waite Tarot, originally illustrated by Pamela Coleman Smith under the direction of Arthur Edward White in 1910. This deck uses symbolism and imagery to offer self-knowledge and self-enlightenment, providing individuals with insight and understanding into their lives.
  • Tarot Learning Tool - Our beginner tarot deck with meanings on them includes the meanings of the cards in both upright and reversed positions, making them great for beginners to learn and remember interpretations. The cards also feature zodiac, elemental names and symbols, numerology, and yes/no/maybe, offering reference information for tarot readers to enhance their understanding and practice of the art of tarot.
  • Superior Quality - The tarot decks with guidebook are durable and made of 350GSM paper, able to withstand frequent use without losing color or shedding paper. At 4.72" x 2.75" in size, they are easy to shuffle and comfortable to hold. The cards' content has undergone multiple professional reviews to ensure accuracy and reliability.
  • Visually Appealing - The minimalist design of KLEDERY tarot for beginners features a simple black background, allowing readers to focus on its symbolism without distracting the intricate design. The edges are decorated with delicate, elegant lines for added sophistication.
  • Included Items - The tarot cards for beginners with meanings on them contains 78 cards, with each card is printed with a wealth of reference information. The accompanying color guidebook offers helpful tips and interpretations for beginners and experts alike. The flocked storage bag protects the cards from negative energy, ensuring optimal condition.
  • Duplicate requests: disabling a button doesn’t stop retries or a second open tab from sending the same request.
  • Stale saves: each save carries a revision. An out-of-date write gets a conflict response, and the frontend keeps the user’s draft and offers to reload saved progress.
  • Retries: an identical retry of an already committed save returns the existing result instead of creating a second one.

Can you change a guided exercise without changing the meaning of saved answers?

The author’s example: an answer stored as option “1” originally meant “Take time to reflect privately.” If the copy is edited so that option 1 reads “Talk to someone you trust,” every previously saved “1” now says something the user never chose.

The fix described is to record the content version under which an exploration began, and to use the same branch logic for the live chapter and the saved recap. The takeaway is that once copy gives meaning to stored answers, editing it is a data-compatibility decision. A reader comment on the post makes a similar point, that saved prompts behave like a schema and changing them resembles a migration. That is commentary, not a standard.

What if a paid reading stops halfway?

Model and payment failures aren’t binary. The author lists several outcomes and how each is handled:

Rank #3
The Original Tarot, Deck of 78 Cards
  • Made from 350 gsm art paper with “linen” finish
  • Includes 86-page guidebook with upright and reversed card meanings, 3-card spread explained, helpful tips for beginners
  • Traditional artwork by Pamela Colman Smith created in 1909, the most famous tarot artwork in the English-speaking world
  • Higher quality alternative to the Rider Waite Smith tarot deck
Situation Reported handling
Deep reading streams over server-sent events A server timeout applies; an early client disconnect triggers an attempt to cancel upstream work.
Generation is partial or fails Only complete successful results enter the result cache.
Credits already deducted, then failure In-app credits are restored and a local interpretation is shown.
Weekly reflections A model-call budget applies, with a local fallback.
Process crashes after deduction Not solved. A catch block in the crashed process can’t repair it; durable job state and reconciliation are listed as future work.

The author separates restoring in-app credits from refunding a payment through the payment provider. They are different operations. The author also notes that proxy response buffering can hide streamed output, so streaming has to be checked through the real proxy, not only locally.

The author’s line on cost control: “A free feature still needs a cost boundary.”

Security and privacy controls the author reports

Limiting what the model can do

The model produces text. It doesn’t control account permissions, payment status, credit balances or database and payment tools. The author is explicit that this doesn’t eliminate prompt injection, and that model output should be treated as untrusted when rendered in the UI.

Service-level controls

  • Request rate limits and body-size limits, plus account and credit checks before paid generation. The author acknowledges that IP-based limits have limitations.
  • Salted password hashes, and session-token hashes in the database.
  • Cookies set HttpOnly and SameSite, with Secure enabled in production.
  • Verification codes that expire and have attempt limits.
  • Payments confirmed with the provider, webhook signatures verified, and ownership checked on order-status requests. Crediting an order should be idempotent, so a webhook and a polling check can’t both grant credits.

Reflection privacy

Analytics can record that a reflection was saved without collecting its text. The feedback form doesn’t automatically attach journal entries. The author calls all of this basic and says input and output handling still needs review. Nobody has independently verified these controls.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Performance and localization

Static generation doesn’t guarantee a fast mobile experience. The author points to images, animations, authentication checks and API latency as the real costs. Their mitigations are a paginated Journey timeline with details loaded on demand, and avatars cropped and converted to WebP in the browser.

The interface supports eight languages, but card data is primarily English and Chinese, with English fallback elsewhere. The author cautions that translated UI and localized content are different levels of support.

Shipping didn’t solve getting users

The author shared the product on Solo, 出海栈, 小众软件 and Indie Hackers, and says there isn’t yet enough evidence to name a repeatable channel. The retrospective separates interest in a technical story from interest in using the product: “A well-read technical post doesn’t prove demand.”

The proposed measures are whether visitors complete a first ritual, continue to another exploration chapter, and return after a few days.

Prototype versus product at a glance

Concern Demo Shipped product (per the author)
State One session Cross-device records with revisions and conflict handling
Prompts and copy Edit freely Versioned, because saved answers carry meaning
Failures Works or errors Partial, delayed or duplicated model and payment outcomes
Success measure It runs Visitors finish a ritual and return
Languages One Eight UI languages, two main card-data languages

Source and limits

The source is On Pounch Man’s DEV Community post, shown as “Posted on Sep 18”. The page doesn’t display a year, and the available metadata conflicts, so the date can’t be pinned down. The post is useful for the author’s design intent and reported implementation. It doesn’t independently establish security, payment recovery, performance, acquisition or retention results.
