The key lesson is to treat schedules, delays, disruption notices and vehicle positions as separate data—not as interchangeable proof that every vehicle is being tracked.
What “real-time” means on a public transport map
In this context, “real-time” means the map consumes current travel updates in addition to schedule data. It does not, by itself, mean that every vehicle appears, that positions are instantaneous, or that information is complete or guaranteed accurate. Those stronger claims need measurements and guarantees that a feed directory or API description alone cannot establish.

A map should distinguish at least four kinds of information:
- Planned timetable: scheduled stops and journeys, which provide the baseline for a route or departure.
- Live predictions and trip updates: changes to expected arrivals or departures, where the selected feed provides them.
- Alerts: service disruptions or other notices that affect a journey.
- Vehicle positions: location updates, if available for the relevant service and feed.
These layers answer different questions. A departure can have a delay without a visible vehicle position; an alert can explain a service issue without identifying a vehicle; and a scheduled trip can exist even when no current update is available.

Where Dutch public transport data comes from
National access through NDOV portals
The Dutch National Access Point for Mobility Data (NTM) describes a national data-access structure in which NDOV portals publish both static transport data and current travel information. NTM says market services such as the NS and 9292 journey planners can use that current information. This makes the portals a route to data used across the public-transport ecosystem, rather than an indication that a single feed necessarily covers every mode or provides every live field. Operator APIs
An operator API can be a better fit when the map’s scope is intentionally narrow. NS says developers can access open data including schedules, engineering works and station information through its API portal. That describes NS data; it should not be presented as a complete national source for all operators or transport modes.
Departure and journey information from 9292
9292 describes its departures API as providing current departure information, crowd expectations, delays, timetable changes, disruptions and flexible transport across several modes. Those categories can support a map that needs more than train locations, though the API page alone does not establish the coverage or refresh behavior of a particular implementation. 9292’s departures API description

OVapi’s directory listed GTFS schedule files alongside alerts, trip updates, train updates and vehicle-position files, with recent modification times on 6–7 October 2026. This establishes that those files were present in the directory at that time; it does not establish their accuracy, completeness, update latency or nationwide vehicle coverage. How to choose a source for the map
Choose based on the information the map needs to show, not on whether a source is labeled “live.” The documented options differ in scope and delivery model, while some operational details—such as refresh cadence and reuse conditions—must be checked for the specific feed or API being used.
| Source | What the cited source establishes | Best fit to consider | What still needs checking |
|---|---|---|---|
| NDOV portals, as described by NTM | Static transport data and current travel information are published for use by services including NS and 9292 journey planners. | A map seeking an access route to Dutch public-transport information beyond one operator. | Specific feed coverage, delivery format, refresh behavior, access conditions and reuse terms. |
| NS API portal | Open APIs include schedules, engineering works and station information. | A map focused on NS-related journeys or station information. | Whether the available endpoints provide the live fields, geography and terms the map requires. |
| 9292 departures API | Its description lists current departures, crowd expectations, delays, timetable changes, disruptions and flexible transport across several modes. | A map that needs departure and journey context across modes. | Specific endpoint coverage, refresh behavior, access conditions and reuse terms. |
| OVapi directory | GTFS schedules and files for alerts, trip updates, train updates and vehicle positions were listed on 6–7 October 2026. | A project evaluating published schedule and realtime feed files. | Feed completeness, accuracy, latency, coverage and reuse conditions; directory presence alone does not answer these. |
For implementation details, NDOV Loket also lists technical materials for RitInfo messages and related schemas, including a January 2022 publication document and a June 2024 WSDL/XSD package. These can help when working with that technical ecosystem, but their dates matter: verify that the material corresponds to the feed and version being integrated. What the scale of Dutch transit does—and does not—tell you
NTM cites CBS figures of 20 billion train passenger-kilometres and 5.1 billion bus, tram and metro passenger-kilometres in 2023. NTM also reports that public transport accounted for 12.6 percent of all passenger-kilometres in 2023. These numbers give context for the transport system; they do not measure a map’s coverage or the quality of any feed.

NTM’s page also refers to 10,000 dynamic passenger information displays, but does not assign a year to that figure. It should not be treated as a current-year count or as evidence that a digital map receives data from all those displays. NTM’s public-transport overview
How to describe coverage and freshness honestly
A map’s presentation should make the source and time context visible. For a screenshot or demonstration, give the feed or API used and the date or timestamp represented. If a vehicle is missing or appears stale, describe it as a possible feed or coverage issue unless the project measured a specific cause.
- Label scheduled information separately from live predictions, alerts and vehicle positions.
- Do not call a position instantaneous or a map complete without measured evidence and a source guarantee.
- Do not infer a specific failure cause from a missing marker alone.
- State the geographic and mode scope actually supported by the source used.
- Check the selected source’s access conditions, reuse terms and refresh behavior rather than assuming they are uniform across Dutch data services.
Passenger privacy is a separate question
NS says public-transport companies and Translink use anonymised or aggregated transaction data for statistical research, and that transaction details or pseudonymised details may be retained for up to 18 months after a trip. That statement concerns statistical processing of travel transactions; it does not establish that a particular map project collects or uses passenger transaction data. A map’s own data handling should be described separately from the practices of transport companies or payment systems. NS’s open-information management privacy statement
