A digital city can give brands a place to do more than buy an ad: they can sponsor buildings, create an experience, or host a virtual storefront. In practice, that can mean a district inside an existing platform—not necessarily a city built from scratch. Historical projects show several models, but they do not confirm that the same spaces are available today.
What does it mean for a brand to own space in a digital city?
“Own” can describe different arrangements. A brand might control a purpose-built environment, occupy a space in a shared virtual district, or run a short activation inside a platform that already has users. The examples available here document announced plans and past projects; they do not establish present-day property rights, advertising inventory, or platform availability.

Build a custom branded world
A standalone world gives a brand more control over its setting, visual identity, and interactions. Vogue’s historical report on SK-II City described this kind of branded virtual world, while also noting the difficulty of creating a complete environment. The trade-off is scope: a custom world needs enough content and activity to make visiting worthwhile. Join a shared virtual district
A multi-partner district can give a brand a place within a larger setting rather than requiring it to create the whole environment. In January 2022, Animoca Brands described The Sandbox’s Mega City as a Hong Kong-themed hub involving partners from business, culture, entertainment, and games, with experiences planned on partner-owned LAND. Activate inside an existing platform
A smaller activation can use a platform’s existing environment instead of building a standalone world. Dentsu’s case study describes KFC Re:Store, a virtual store hosted on China’s QQ platform and created with Unreal Engine 4. It included avatar clothing, furniture, a virtual pet, virtual currency, and virtual businesses. What a virtual advertising district could look like
SHIBUYA109’s March 7, 2022 announcement offers a specific example of place-based advertising. The company said it planned a voxel recreation of Shibuya Crossing in The Sandbox, with virtual buildings intended for rental and advertising. It also described plans for NFTs and mini-games, and said it was looking to partner with companies in Japan and the Shibuya district.

That is a model for connecting a recognizable place with branded experiences and advertising locations. It remains an announced plan from 2022, not confirmation that buildings are currently rentable or that the project’s inventory is active. Animoca Brands’ SHIBUYA109 announcement

Ocean Park expressed a similar intention in a February 14, 2022 announcement. Its chief executive, Ivan Wong, said: “We will fill our virtual land at The Sandbox with creative content and offerings that are distinctively Ocean Park.” The announcement said collaboration details would follow, so the quote records an aspiration rather than confirming what was ultimately delivered. Vogue’s report quotes Cathy Hackl, then identified as a futurist and chief metaverse officer at Future Metaverse Labs and vice president at Avatar Dimension, advising brands that a full world is not always necessary: “You don’t have to create a full world but you can start by dipping your toes and doing little activations here and there.” The comment supports a difference in scale, not a measured comparison of performance. What the reported campaign numbers do—and don’t—show
Dentsu reports that KFC Re:Store generated 850 million chats with Colonel Sanders and sold 180 million virtual KFC food items over five weeks. Those are agency-reported figures for that campaign; the case-study page does not provide independent validation or state a year. They describe activity within one project, not a general benchmark for virtual advertising.

What to verify before treating a virtual space as ad inventory
Announcements from 2022 can illustrate how a digital city might be structured, but they cannot answer whether a placement can be booked now. Before committing to a campaign, establish the practical details directly with the platform or project operator:
- Whether the platform and specific location are operating and accessible to the intended audience.
- Whether the space is actually offered for rent, advertising, sponsorship, or another arrangement—and who controls those rights.
- What a visitor can do there, how the experience will be maintained, and what the campaign includes.
- Whether the plan connects virtual activity to a real-world purchase, and whether that feature is available in the relevant region.
- What audience, measurement, pricing, and delivery terms are documented for the proposed campaign.
The cited sources do not establish current platform access, advertising inventory, prices, audience reach, or commercial results for the announced Sandbox districts. They also do not establish that KFC Re:Store remains available. Treat each as a historical example unless an operator confirms present terms.
