What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Yes, you can make Blu-ray archiving largely automatic: insert a disc, let an automation layer call MakeMKV’s command-line core, optionally pass the resulting MKV through HandBrake, and save the finished file to organized local or NAS storage. “Costs next to nothing” is a marginal-cost and labor-saving description—not a measured claim about the price of every drive, disk, disc, or electricity bill.
The repeatable Blu-ray workflow
- Insert the disc. You still need to handle each DVD or Blu-ray physically and use an optical drive compatible with the format you want to read.
- Let the automation layer detect it. Automatic Ripping Machine (ARM) documents an unattended mode that checks an inserted optical disc to determine whether it contains audio, video (movie or TV), or data, then starts the appropriate rip.
- Extract with MakeMKV. MakeMKV separates its graphical interface from the command-line core,
makemkvcon. Its developer documentation says, “You are welcome to automate MakeMKV,” and describesmakemkvconas the component intended for automated products. This is the disc-extraction and decryption stage. - Check the selected title. Do not assume the first playlist is always the movie. Some discs contain many playlists, and BD-Java features can require a Java runtime. A quick spot-check of duration, chapters, audio tracks and subtitles prevents an unattended job from producing the wrong cut.
- Optionally encode with HandBrake. HandBrake can open the MKV files commonly produced by MakeMKV. It is a post-extraction transcoder, not the layer that decrypts the disc.
- Move the result into your library. Store the original MKV, the compressed derivative, or both in a predictable folder and filename scheme, then let your media software index the destination.
The result is a repeatable pipeline rather than a one-click guarantee: disc handling, title validation and storage management remain part of the job.

Hardware and software requirements
| Component | What it must support | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Optical drive | DVD and/or ordinary Blu-ray for the discs you own | Ordinary Blu-ray capability does not prove 4K UHD compatibility. Check the specific drive and firmware for UHD reading before buying. |
| Automation host | A system that can run ARM and MakeMKV | ARM’s documentation supports one or more optical drives and unattended processing. |
| Memory for UHD transcoding | Enough RAM for the encode workload | ARM’s 2025 wiki revision says UHD transcoding may need 6–16 GB or more of memory; the requirement depends on the workload and settings. |
| MakeMKV | A working installation, including its command-line core | Licensing and beta terms can change, so verify the current status before deployment. |
| HandBrake | Optional, for smaller encoded files | It consumes the MKV after extraction; it does not replace MakeMKV’s decryption step. |
| Storage | Local disks or a NAS with room for source and encoded files | No universal storage-per-movie figure applies. Disc length, video format, audio tracks and your encode settings all change the result. |
Full-quality MKV or a HandBrake encode?
| Choice | Advantages | Trade-offs | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep the MakeMKV output | Preserves the extracted video, audio and subtitle streams without an additional encode; avoids waiting for a second processing stage. | Uses substantially more storage than a compressed derivative in many workflows, and may be less convenient for clients that prefer broadly compatible formats. | An archival master, future re-encoding, or a household with ample storage. |
| Encode with HandBrake | Creates a smaller, more playback-friendly file and can remove unwanted tracks or adjust quality. | Encoding takes additional time and is lossy when you choose a lossy codec or quality target; the original source is no longer represented bit-for-bit. | Everyday streaming, limited storage, or devices that struggle with the source MKV. |
| Keep both | Combines an untouched source with a convenient viewing copy. | Requires the most storage and a clear naming convention so the two versions are not confused. | Long-term preservation plus easy playback. |
Why UHD and playlist selection need extra care
UHD is a separate compatibility check
A USB drive that reads standard Blu-rays may not read 4K UHD discs. Treat the drive model, firmware and operating-system support as a separate verification from ordinary Blu-ray support. Do not design an unattended workflow until a representative UHD disc has been tested end to end.

Protected and Java-based discs can behave differently
MakeMKV’s BD+ documentation describes a BD+ execution environment and decryption keys. Its BD-Java documentation notes that some discs need a Java runtime and may contain many playlists. Those mechanisms explain why title selection cannot always be safely reduced to “choose the first item.”

An API route exists for applications
MakeMKV’s LibMMBD documentation describes an API path for decrypting M2TS and SSIF data, including 4K UHD media. It still requires a working MakeMKV installation, so it is an integration option, not an independent replacement for the software.
How to build the unattended setup
- Prove the drive manually. Insert an ordinary Blu-ray first, then a UHD disc if that is a target format. Confirm that the operating system sees the drive and that MakeMKV can read a title before adding automation.
- Install and test MakeMKV. Open a disc in the GUI, identify the correct playlist, and confirm that audio and subtitle tracks appear as expected. This establishes a known-good baseline for
makemkvcon. - Install the automation layer. Configure ARM’s unattended mode to monitor the optical drive and invoke MakeMKV for video discs. If you use multiple drives, map each one deliberately and test that jobs do not collide.
- Define a staging location. Write newly extracted files to a temporary folder with enough free space, rather than directly into the final library. This makes failed jobs easier to identify and prevents incomplete files from being indexed.
- Add the optional encode stage. Point HandBrake at completed MKVs, choose a consistent preset and output naming rule, and leave the source untouched until the encoded file passes inspection.
- Validate before cleanup. Check runtime, chapters, expected audio and subtitles, and a short playback sample. Only then move the file to permanent storage or delete a temporary derivative.
- Monitor the first several discs. Review logs for unreadable sectors, incorrect playlists, missing Java support, insufficient memory or a full destination. Unattended processing should be earned through successful supervised runs.
What “next to nothing” really means
There is no reliable universal figure for cost per disc, total build cost, average rip time or storage consumed per movie. The economics depend on what you already own, the price of each disc, the drive and computer you choose, electricity, replacement disks and whether you retain one file or two.

| Cost category | How automation changes it |
|---|---|
| Upfront hardware | You still pay for an optical drive, a computer and enough local or NAS capacity. UHD support can narrow the drive choices. |
| Software | MakeMKV licensing or beta terms may change. HandBrake and ARM are optional components of the workflow, but each has its own compatibility requirements. |
| Per-disc marginal cost | Once the hardware is in place, another owned disc mainly adds handling time, storage consumption and electricity rather than a new service fee. The exact amount is not established by a universal published measurement. |
| Labor | Automatic detection, extraction and queueing remove much of the repetitive clicking, while title checks and disc insertion remain manual. |
| Ongoing storage | Full MKVs and encoded copies can grow quickly. Capacity planning is the continuing expense, especially when retaining both versions. |
That is why the phrase can be reasonable for someone with suitable hardware and a stack of discs: automation reduces repeated labor and the marginal software cost of each additional job. It should not be read as a promise that the entire project is free.

- The disc is not detected: Recheck the USB connection, operating-system visibility and drive compatibility. Test in MakeMKV before debugging ARM.
- The wrong movie or cut is extracted: Compare playlist duration, chapters and track languages. Discs with many playlists require supervised selection or a validation rule.
- A UHD disc fails while Blu-rays work: Treat UHD support as a separate drive and firmware problem; ordinary Blu-ray support is not evidence of UHD support.
- Transcoding stops or becomes unstable: Check available memory. ARM’s guidance identifies 6–16 GB or more for some UHD transcoding workloads, but demanding settings can require additional headroom.
- HandBrake will not open the source: Confirm that the MakeMKV extraction completed and that the file is a normal MKV. HandBrake is not the disc-decryption stage.
- The library fills unexpectedly: Decide whether the source MKV, the encoded copy or both are required, then separate temporary staging from permanent storage and monitor free capacity.
- Automation works on one disc but not another: Review MakeMKV version and licensing status, Java requirements, playlist structure and drive firmware; protected discs are not uniform.
Local disks or a NAS?
Local storage keeps the pipeline simple and avoids network transfers during extraction. A NAS makes the library available to multiple devices and can centralize capacity, but it adds network throughput, permissions and failure-recovery considerations. In either design, keep the temporary extraction path on storage that can sustain large writes and do not let an indexing service ingest half-written files.

Legal and maintenance considerations
Copyright rules for making personal Blu-ray copies differ by jurisdiction, and the applicable exemptions, access-control rules and household-use definitions must be checked locally. This workflow description is not a jurisdiction-specific legal conclusion. Also recheck drive firmware compatibility, MakeMKV licensing or beta conditions, ARM and HandBrake versions, and storage pricing before committing to a build.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The practical verdict
An automated Blu-ray library is technically achievable: ARM can watch for inserted discs, makemkvcon can perform the MakeMKV extraction, and HandBrake can create optional viewing copies. The setup saves the most time when you standardize storage, validate playlists and test UHD compatibility up front. Its “next to nothing” economics apply to marginal effort and per-disc processing after the hardware is paid for—not to the complete cost of drives, memory, storage, electricity and legally acquiring the media.
