I asked for this Teams feature years ago, and Microsoft finally delivered: direct OneDrive video in Teams events

Microsoft is adding a long-requested way to play videos stored in OneDrive directly inside Teams events. Event organizers and producers using Manage what attendees see will be able to select a OneDrive video, put it on stage and control playback without screen sharing a local media player or embedding the file in PowerPoint.

What Microsoft is changing

The new workflow makes a OneDrive-hosted video an event source in Teams. From the event production controls, an organizer or producer can choose the video, place it on stage for attendees and use Teams playback controls. The Microsoft Message Center describes the aim as smoother, higher-quality playback and simpler production through controls built into Teams.

This is particularly useful for events that depend on recorded material. A football coach, for example, can bring game or practice film into a remote team study without first opening a desktop video player and sharing the entire screen. The audience sees the staged video rather than a capture of the producer’s desktop.

How to share a OneDrive video in a Teams event

The feature applies to Teams events configured with Manage what attendees see. When it is available in your tenant, use this production sequence:

  • Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
  1. Before the event, upload or copy the video to OneDrive.
  2. Confirm that the event’s organizers or producers have the permissions required to access the file, and that the intended event audience can receive it through the event.
  3. Open the event’s production interface and select Manage what attendees see.
  4. Choose the option to add or share a video from OneDrive, then select the stored file.
  5. Put the video on stage. Use the playback controls in Teams to start or pause it during the event.

Microsoft has not published a required resolution, latency target or percentage improvement. “Smoother” and “higher-quality” are qualitative descriptions, so actual results can still depend on the video, network conditions and tenant configuration.

What this replaces

Workflow Playback and production Extra requirements
Local screen sharing Shares the player window or desktop. It can be awkward to frame and may introduce lag or reduced quality. A local media player and the video downloaded or otherwise available on the producer’s computer.
PowerPoint embedding Keeps the video in a presentation, but requires preparing and loading a PowerPoint file as part of event production. A presentation containing the video and the associated preparation work.
Direct OneDrive video in Teams Stages the video in Teams and provides playback controls inside the event workflow. Microsoft characterizes the expected playback as smoother and higher quality than the old workarounds. The video must be in OneDrive, with appropriate permissions, and the event must use Manage what attendees see.

The new method does not eliminate the need to plan access. OneDrive storage and permissions remain part of the setup, and the feature is for event organizers and producers rather than a general replacement for every Teams video-sharing scenario.

The notice lists desktop and Mac as supported platforms. The dates are Microsoft’s current plan, not a promise that every organization will see the control simultaneously.

What organizations should do now

Microsoft says no mandatory administrative action is required. It recommends three practical updates:

  • Tell Teams event organizers and producers that OneDrive videos can be shared directly when the feature reaches their tenant.
  • Store videos needed for upcoming events in OneDrive ahead of time and verify the appropriate permissions.
  • Revise internal production guidance that currently instructs staff to screen-share a local player or embed video in PowerPoint.

For a high-stakes event, keep the existing method available as a fallback until the new control has appeared in the tenant and the production team has tested the exact files and permissions it will use.

Who benefits most

Remote training and coaching

Teams that review game footage, demonstrations or practice recordings can move from desktop capture to a staged video source, reducing unrelated windows and presentation steps.

Corporate and public events

Producers can prepare media in OneDrive and bring it into the event without packaging a separate presentation file. That can simplify handoffs between production staff, provided everyone who needs the file has access.

Attendees

Attendees are the downstream beneficiaries: they receive the event’s staged video while the producer controls playback in Teams. The notice does not promise a specific resolution or latency figure, so organizers should still validate the audience experience for their network and content.

Important limitations

  • The capability depends on the event using Manage what attendees see.
  • Videos must be stored in OneDrive and accessible with appropriate permissions.
  • The listed support is for Teams desktop and Mac; the notice does not establish equivalent support on every other client.
  • Rollout timing varies by tenant and release ring during the November–December 2026 schedule.
  • No published benchmark quantifies the improvement in smoothness, resolution or latency.

The Bottom Line

Direct OneDrive video staging removes two cumbersome Teams-event workarounds—local screen sharing and PowerPoint embedding. Once the rollout reaches your tenant, prepare the file and permissions in OneDrive, use Manage what attendees see, and test the event workflow before relying on it for a live broadcast.
