An old x86-64 desktop can become a useful home server without running a huge stack. Start with Pi-hole for network DNS filtering, then add Home Assistant, Jellyfin, Syncthing or Nextcloud according to what you actually need. The services are complementary, but their hardware, storage and security demands are not.
What an old PC can do as a Docker server
Docker lets you run separate services on one existing computer, each with its own container, configuration and data. That makes an aging desktop useful for network-wide DNS filtering, local automation, media playback, file synchronization or a browser-based personal cloud.

The sensible baseline is an x86-64 processor, dependable storage for Docker volumes and an Ethernet connection to your router or switch. Keep service configuration and user data on storage that is separate from the operating-system disk when possible, and back those volumes up. A reboot, failed drive or operating-system upgrade should not erase the services that made the machine useful.
These projects change their container tags, hardware support and security recommendations. Pin image versions rather than silently tracking an untested latest tag, and check each project’s current documentation before upgrading.

How the five containers differ
| Container | Primary outcome | Relative demand | Network and storage considerations | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pi-hole | DNS filtering for the LAN | Very low | Small configuration and logs; serves DNS on TCP and UDP port 53 | Keep a second DNS path available while the Docker host is offline |
| Home Assistant | Local home automation | Low to moderate, depending on integrations | Persistent configuration; radio hardware may need USB access | The container requires more hands-on administration and does not include Home Assistant OS add-ons |
| Jellyfin | Local media streaming | Highest and most hardware-sensitive | Needs persistent media storage; hardware acceleration requires the host render device inside the container | Old CPUs and many low-end single-board computers perform poorly, especially for transcoding |
| Syncthing | Direct folder synchronization between devices | Low | Persistent /var/syncthing data; host networking improves local discovery |
It synchronizes selected folders rather than providing a full web-cloud suite |
| Nextcloud | Browser-based personal cloud | Moderate to high | Persistent application and user-data volumes plus a database container | More components to maintain; internet-facing use requires HTTPS |
1. Pi-hole: the easiest first container
Pi-hole has one focused job: it answers DNS requests and blocks unwanted domains for devices on your network. Its documentation describes it as “very lightweight” and says it does not require much processing power, making it a strong first project for an old desktop.
Because clients must reach the service for name resolution, the container uses DNS port 53 over both TCP and UDP. Configure your router or selected devices to use the server’s LAN address, not a public address. Do not expose the administration interface or DNS service directly to the internet.
Plan for failure before switching the whole household to one DNS endpoint. Keep a second resolver available—on the router, another machine or a temporary manual setting—so a host reboot does not make every device appear offline. Pi-hole is best when you want network-wide filtering with minimal CPU and memory overhead.

Home Assistant supports container installation on hardware you already own, including x86-64 computers. Its hardware FAQ notes that a Raspberry Pi, mini PC, NUC or virtual machine can run Home Assistant alongside other services. That makes an old desktop a practical automation hub if you are comfortable maintaining Docker yourself.

The trade-off is administrative: the container does not include the add-on applications bundled with Home Assistant OS. You must manage companion services, updates, backups and device access separately. This approach suits someone who wants control over the host and is willing to assemble the surrounding stack.
Zigbee, Thread and Matter devices need radio hardware that the container can access. Home Assistant’s FAQ names Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 as an accessory for those protocols. Verify USB passthrough and device permissions before buying or pairing a radio; a container that cannot see the adapter cannot commission devices.
3. Jellyfin: useful, but test the old hardware first
Jellyfin is the most demanding choice because playback may require decoding or transcoding video. Jellyfin’s current hardware guide says version 10.11 requires an x86 CPU with SSE4.1. It recommends at least 8GB of RAM for an average deployment, while 4GB may be sufficient for a Linux server without a graphical interface.

Hardware acceleration also needs the host’s render device exposed to the container. If the device is absent, inaccessible or unsupported, Jellyfin falls back to software processing. The project warns that many low-end single-board computers, including Raspberry Pi models, can provide a poor experience because hardware-acceleration support is inadequate. An old desktop with a compatible CPU or GPU can work well for direct play, but do not promise heavy transcoding until you have verified it.
4. Syncthing: simple, direct folder replication
Syncthing keeps selected folders synchronized directly between your computers. The official Docker image is syncthing/syncthing, and its Docker instructions use a persistent /var/syncthing volume so device identities, indexes and settings survive container replacement.
The Docker guidance recommends host networking. Bridge networking can hide local addresses and make LAN discovery less reliable, which is especially inconvenient when the goal is fast synchronization inside your home. Host networking reduces that layer of translation, but it also means you should understand which ports the service listens on and avoid exposing the host unnecessarily.

Choose Syncthing when the requirement is “keep these folders consistent on these computers.” It is not a multi-user web drive, calendar platform or browser office suite. Back up the synchronized data separately: synchronization propagates deletions and corruptions as well as good files unless you configure versioning and independent backups.

5. Nextcloud: a fuller personal cloud with more moving parts
Nextcloud provides a browser-oriented platform for files, sharing, calendars, contacts and other web features. Its Docker image offers Apache and FPM variants, but a useful Compose deployment also needs persistent application and user-data volumes and a database container.
That supporting stack is why Nextcloud demands more planning than Syncthing. You must preserve the database as well as the files, coordinate upgrades across components and monitor available disk space. If the installation is reachable from outside your home, Nextcloud’s documentation requires HTTPS; a reverse proxy is a common way to terminate TLS before traffic reaches the application.
Use Nextcloud when several people need accounts, browser access, sharing controls or calendars. If you only need reliable folder replication between your own machines, Syncthing is the simpler and smaller choice.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A practical deployment order
- Prepare the host. Install a supported 64-bit operating system and Docker, connect the computer by Ethernet if possible, and confirm that the storage device is healthy.
- Create persistent storage. Keep each service’s configuration, database and user data in named volumes or dedicated directories. Put large media libraries and cloud data on a separate disk from the operating system when you can.
- Start with one low-risk service. Pi-hole is a good first container because its role is narrow. Confirm that clients can resolve names and that you have a backup DNS path before adding more services.
- Add services one at a time. Deploy Home Assistant, Syncthing, Jellyfin or Nextcloud only after recording its ports, volume locations and update procedure. This makes failures attributable instead of turning one reboot into a five-service mystery.
- Test from the real clients. Pair automation devices, synchronize representative folders and try Jellyfin playback on every important client. For Nextcloud, test login, uploads, sharing and database-backed features before relying on it.
- Document recovery. Record container versions, volume paths, credentials storage and restore steps. Perform a test restore of configuration and data rather than assuming a backup is usable.
Security and maintenance rules for an old home server
- Do not publish Docker management interfaces or internal administration pages directly to the public internet.
- Use strong, unique credentials and update the host, images and applications on a schedule.
- For any Nextcloud instance reachable from outside the home, configure HTTPS through a properly maintained reverse proxy or equivalent secure front end.
- Back up Docker volumes, databases and irreplaceable media to another device. A second disk in the same aging PC is not protection against theft, power damage or total hardware failure.
- Pin known-good image versions, then test upgrades with a current backup. Roll back when an update breaks a device integration, database migration or hardware-acceleration path.
- Watch disk capacity and temperatures. Media indexes, synchronization history and cloud revisions can grow even when CPU use remains low.
Optional sixth container: Uptime Kuma
Uptime Kuma can check whether the five services answer and alert you when one stops. Its Docker instructions map persistent /app/data, allowing monitoring history and settings to survive container replacement. It does not make a service reliable by itself, but it shortens the time between a failure and your response.
