Paying testers two cents for each test seemed like a simple way to keep reciprocal app testing moving. But for the campaign I described—12 testers over 14 days—the arithmetic came to $3.36, while a $5 payout minimum meant each tester would need to complete 250 tests to cash out. I proposed PP Coins instead: rewards earned through testing that can be exchanged for visibility inside PeerPlay. That is a planned experiment, not a proven fix.
Why a two-cent payment was less simple than it looked
I considered cash because reciprocal testing can slow once an app has assembled its tester group. In the scenario I described, 12 testers completing a test each day for 14 days would cost $3.36 at $0.02 per test. That is my campaign estimate, not an industry benchmark or a measured average.

The payout threshold changed the practical calculation. At two cents per test, a $5 minimum payout takes 250 tests to reach. I also found phone-originated test logs difficult to verify when money was attached: activity could be recorded, but I could not be confident every logged test represented the intended work.

There was a business trade-off as well. I estimated that a paid-tier sale yielded $6 to $10 in margin. Even a small cash campaign therefore had to be weighed against money that might otherwise come from sales—and against the administrative problem of validating work and paying people.

What PP Coins are meant to reward
My alternative was to keep the reward within PeerPlay. PP Coins would be earned for testing activity and redeemed for Boost visibility, rather than converted into cash. In my proposal, the earning and redemption rules are:
- Earn up to five coins per day for testing.
- Earn five additional coins for completing a 14-day cycle with at least 12 real testing days.
- Earn two coins when feedback is marked solved.
- Redeem 30 coins for one Boost day, with a limit of seven redeemed days per month.
I estimated that someone testing three apps a day could earn about 90 coins in a month—roughly three Boost days under those terms. That is an estimate of the proposed system, not observed user behavior.
Rank #2
- Redemption: Online only. Robux cards can only be redeemed in a browser at Roblox.com/redeem. They cannot be redeemed in the Roblox mobile app or any video game console.
- Roblox is an immersive platform for connection and communication. Every day, millions of people come to Roblox to create, play, work, learn, and connect with each other in experiences built by our global community of creators.
- Get more with every Roblox Gift Card! From now on, when you redeem a Roblox gift card, you get up to 25% more Robux. Perfect for gaming, creating, and exploring- more Robux means more possibilities!
- Deck out your avatar and unlock additional perks in your favorite experiences when you use Roblox Gift Cards to purchase Robux (Roblox's virtual currency).
- Each gift card grants a free virtual item upon redemption.
Cash and in-product credits solve different problems
| Decision point | Cash at $0.02 per test | Proposed PP Coins |
|---|---|---|
| Campaign cost | My example totals $3.36 for 12 testers over 14 days. | No cash payout in the proposed exchange; coins are redeemed for PeerPlay Boost visibility. |
| Access to the reward | A $5 minimum requires 250 tests at two cents each. | 30 coins buy one Boost day, subject to a seven-day monthly redemption cap. |
| Verification and abuse | I found phone-originated test logs hard to verify when cash was at stake. | Controls can limit or reverse coin awards, but fabricated tests remain possible. |
| Contributor value | Cash has value outside the app, but a small balance may not reach the payout minimum quickly. | Boost visibility is useful to a PeerPlay developer only if they want more exposure there. |
| Business cost | Cash is an outlay; my post estimated $6–$10 margin per paid-tier sale. | Coin-funded Boost days may displace paid Boost sales. |
| Ability to adjust | Payment terms and verification affect the cost of each campaign. | Coin amounts, caps, and controls can be adjusted as usage data comes in. |
Credits are not automatically cheaper just because they are not cash. They have an opportunity cost if users redeem a benefit they would otherwise have bought. They also have limited usefulness: someone who does not want PeerPlay exposure gets less value from a Boost day than from money they can spend elsewhere.

The proposal includes several ways to constrain coin issuance and redemption:
Rank #3
- Redeemable on accounts in the United States and in U.S. Dollars.
- Gift card must be redeemed at EpicGames.com/redeem. This gift card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly on a console device (PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, etc.)
- If you play Fortnite experiences on a console device, you need to link your Epic Games account to your console account(s) so items purchased at Fortnite.com/item-shop appear across all of your linked accounts
- Requires internet connection, valid Epic account and prior acceptance of the terms
- Redemption: Online
- Write coin changes on the server rather than trusting a client-side balance.
- Award only once for each app-and-day record.
- Set a weekly cap per developer.
- Require accounts to be at least one week old before they can spend coins.
- Expire coins after 90 days of inactivity.
- Keep a kill switch and the ability to revoke coins.
These controls can make a fabricated entry harder to monetize or contain an abuse pattern, but they cannot establish that every test actually happened. I acknowledged that test logs could still be fabricated; cash was not the only model with a verification problem.
The two-week test was a plan, not a result
My September 24, 2026 post said I would evaluate the next two weeks by tests per day. It did not report the outcome. There is therefore no basis to say PP Coins increased testing, improved retention, or reduced fraud. Those are questions the planned experiment would need to answer.
Rank #4
- Redeemable at US GameStop, EB Games, Babbage's, Electronic Boutique, EBX, Planet X, and Software Etc. stores. Also redeemable online at and GameStop.com and EBGames.com.
- Over 6,100 stores located throughout the United States.
- GameStop. Power to the Players.
- Redemption: Instore and Online
- No returns and no refunds on gift cards.
The comparison also rests on one creator’s account of PeerPlay’s proposed mechanics and economics, not an independent study. The post describes a Google Play testing context involving 12 testers over 14 days; that should not be read as a statement of the current rule for every app or developer. The cited post does not independently establish broader platform requirements.
What I would watch before expanding the rewards
Test volume alone would not tell me whether the incentive was working well. A useful evaluation would also distinguish valid tests from fabricated or duplicate records, track how often earned coins are redeemed, and examine whether Boost redemptions replace purchases that would otherwise have happened. It would also matter whether contributors find the in-app reward worthwhile and whether the earning rules remain understandable.
Best Value
- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
- Redemption: Online
The core uncertainty is not whether a virtual balance can be programmed; it is whether the reward creates useful, verifiable participation without becoming an unplanned discount on paid visibility. As I put it: “Coins cannot fix an app that crashes.”
