Games Workshop unveiled them on 18 September 2026 as a new faction with an Army Set, battletome and a complete Spearhead force led by Hjulda Drakkblud. The important catch for existing players is that Fyreslayers are being brought into the Khazalite Holds battletome, with several older units entering Warhammer Legends after a defined transition period.
That makes the release exciting and unsettling at the same time: it offers a larger duardin ecosystem, but it also raises questions about whether future Age of Sigmar armies will be maintained as separate factions or consolidated into broader umbrella books.

What the Khazalite Holds launch actually includes
Games Workshop describes the Khazalite Holds as a traditional, heavily armoured and ancestor-focused duardin faction. Its official reveal promises “tough armour, deadly hammers, and a cannon big enough to blow a hole through a Mega-Gargant.” The Army Set contains miniatures and a battletome, and the box is presented as a complete Spearhead army rather than a partial collection that needs immediate expansion.

The Clanshields establish the army’s baseline
The Clanshields kit contains 10 miniatures with interchangeable shields and heads, hammer-or-axe weapon choices and command options. Games Workshop gives the unit a 3+ save and says it gains +1 to wound while it has grudge marks. Those details point to a force that expects to survive punishment and become more dangerous as a battle develops.

How Khazalite rules are designed to work
Grudge marks turn setbacks into resources
The central battle trait is “Thorgrim’s Beard! There are Grudges to be Settled!” Khazalite units gain grudge marks in several situations:
- A Khazalite unit is destroyed.
- A Kromdron unit contests an objective with enemies.
- A Grimmdron unit charges and survives without destroying a unit.
- The army’s general takes damage.
“Reclaim the Karaks” adds a mark when an enemy takes an objective in your territory, while using Retreat removes one. In practical terms, the published rules encourage a player to absorb pressure, keep contesting important ground and convert losses or battlefield damage into later attacks. That is an interpretation of the announced mechanics, not a claim about tournament performance.
Ancestor worship supplies once-per-battle swings
The faction also invokes five once-per-battle Ancestral Vows. Games Workshop cites effects including healing and damage through “We Honour Valaya!” The vows give the army another layer of timing decisions: using one too early may waste a powerful response, while waiting may leave a key unit unable to survive the next exchange.

What changes for Fyreslayer players
The biggest immediate consequence is consolidation. Games Workshop says Fyreslayers become part of the Khazalite Holds battletome. Existing miniatures can still form a full Fyreslayer army, or they can be fielded alongside the new Kromdron units.
| Fyreslayer units and rules elements | Status described by Games Workshop |
|---|---|
| Vulkite Berzerkers | Moving to Warhammer Legends |
| Auric Runemaster | Moving to Warhammer Legends |
| Battlesmith | Moving to Warhammer Legends |
| Doomseeker | Moving to Warhammer Legends |
| Grimwrath Berzerker | Moving to Warhammer Legends |
| Magmic Battleforge | Moving to Warhammer Legends |
| Magmic Invocations | Moving to Warhammer Legends |
Games Workshop says those units remain usable in competitive events for 12 months after the new battletome releases, after which they move to Legends. The announcement does not establish a single calendar date for that cutoff; the clock is tied to the new book’s release.
The Fyreslayer range that remains in the battletome
The retained roster includes Magmadroth-mounted heroes, Runefathers, Runesons, Runesmiters, Auric Flamekeepers, Grimhold Exiles, Vulkyn Flameseekers, Auric Hearthguard, Hearthguard Berzerkers, plus the new Ormyr and Ashtongue. Owners therefore have a supported path for existing collections, but not every older warscroll or faction-specific support element survives unchanged.

Why this is more than a single new army
The battletome’s three Armies of Renown deliberately connect different duardin collections:
- Valankrom’s War Throng: built around the new centerpiece and Gholems.
- Fyrd of Fyrepeak: gives a Fyreslayer army a vengeance-and-grudge route.
- Throngankor Alliance: combines Khazalite Holds and Kharadron Overlords, including transport aboard Kharadron skyvessels.
This rules support gives collectors reasons to combine new Khazalite kits with surviving Fyreslayer models and Kharadron forces. It does not establish that any of these combinations will be competitive; Games Workshop has published no tournament results or win-rate data for the new army.
The setting behind the Khazalite Holds
Khazalite holds, also called karaks, are mountain settlements carved into rock. Games Workshop says many have been ruined by centuries of strife and infiltration by malign forces. The upper halls contain garrisons and communal areas, while the deeps house armouries, forges, farms and halls of remembrance.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The culture is defined by craft, sound and memory. Khazalites believe they can hear the vibrational wisdom of stone, and the official lore says forgetting is the worst fate for these duardin. That emphasis explains why grudges, ancestor vows and halls of remembrance are mechanical themes rather than cosmetic details.

For someone starting a duardin force, the Army Set is the clearest entry point announced so far: it includes the battletome, a collection of new miniatures and enough models to form a complete Spearhead army. It also introduces the faction’s core rules immediately, rather than requiring a new player to assemble several unrelated kits before playing.

You do not need to replace an existing army: the retained roster can continue as a full Fyreslayer force, and the new battletome allows Kromdron additions. Buying the set makes most sense if you want the new Khazalite aesthetic, access to the mixed-army rules or a second Spearhead force. The announcement provides no price or competitive evaluation, so value should be judged from the contents and your intended collection rather than assumed tournament strength.

What this may signal for Age of Sigmar
What is confirmed
One existing faction, Fyreslayers, is being folded into a new battletome with a stated Legends transition. At the same time, Games Workshop is adding a new Khazalite range and formal mixed-duardin rules through the Armies of Renown.
What is reasonable to infer
This release suggests Games Workshop is willing to refresh older ranges through larger umbrella factions that support multiple themes and collections. If that approach continues, some future releases could use fewer fully separate books while offering more cross-faction options. That conclusion comes from this consolidation alone; Games Workshop has not announced a programme to merge additional factions.
Why the wider future is still uncertain
In a September 2025 statement about the future of Age of Sigmar, Games Workshop said, “The future of the game is bright – and there’s more to come for every existing faction, plus one or two bigger developments on the way.” That supports continued investment across the game, but it does not promise that every faction will retain an unchanged model range or battletome structure. The long-term status of other duardin factions, including Kharadron Overlords, remains unconfirmed.
The practical verdict for players
The Khazalite Holds are an appealing launch because they add a strong visual identity, a rules engine built around grudges and ancestors, and official bridges to Fyreslayers and Kharadron Overlords. The uncomfortable part is equally clear: some Fyreslayer units are entering Legends, and the shape of a familiar faction is changing.
If you already own Fyreslayers, keep using the supported models, check the 12-month competitive transition when the battletome releases and decide whether new Khazalite units add something you actually want to play. If you are new to duardin, the Army Set is the most self-contained starting point currently announced. What it does not provide is proof of a broader merger policy, a sales forecast or a competitive ranking—those parts of the future have not been published.
