Adding a GTA 5 mod does not, by itself, prove you were scammed or infected. The risk depends on what you downloaded, where it came from, what you were asked to do, and what happened afterward. Treat suspicious files and unexpected account activity cautiously, and keep the separate rules for GTA Online in mind: Rockstar distinguishes Story Mode modding guidance from enforcement against online modding and exploits.
First, check what actually happened
Work through these questions before deciding whether this was a scam. A “yes” answer is a reason to investigate, not proof of malware.

- Did you pay? Check the payment method and transaction history. Be especially cautious if a download page demanded an unusual payment method or promised a guaranteed fix or unlock.
- Did you enter your Rockstar credentials? If you typed your password into a page reached through the download, verify that it was an official Rockstar sign-in page. Do not use links supplied by the suspicious download to check your account.
- Did you run a separate installer or executable? Note the file name and where it came from. A mod archive and a separate program bundled with it are not the same thing; running an executable increases the importance of checking the file with updated security software.
- Did it ask for unusual permissions or steps? Requests unrelated to installing a game modification deserve scrutiny. Do not follow instructions to disable security protections just to make an unknown file run.
- Has anything changed since then? Look for unfamiliar account activity, password-reset messages you did not request, unexpected security alerts, or unusual behavior on the PC. Those clues merit action, but they do not identify the cause by themselves.
If you may have exposed your account or PC
Secure Rockstar credentials through official channels
If you entered your password on an unfamiliar page or see activity you do not recognize, go directly to Rockstar’s official account channels rather than clicking a link in a suspicious message or download. Rockstar warns that emails can masquerade as official Rockstar messages. Its account-security guidance says to “Continuously update any antivirus or anti-malware software you have.” Read Rockstar’s account-security guidance.

Keep your antivirus or anti-malware software current and use it to check the downloaded files and your PC. A clean scan cannot prove that a file is safe or that credentials were not exposed. If Rockstar account access is in question, use official account recovery and security options as well as scanning the device.

Rockstar notes that some antivirus products can interfere with BattlEye or game launch. That is a troubleshooting issue, not a reason to routinely turn off protection for an unknown mod. If the game fails to launch, consult Rockstar’s BattlEye FAQ for the official guidance.
Malware risk and GTA Online rules are different questions
A malicious mod is possible, but the title cannot establish one
There is historical evidence of malicious third-party GTA V PC mods: a Steam Community announcement dated May 19, 2015 reproduced a warning that some mods were reportedly packaged with malware, including keyloggers that could steal Social Club credentials and potentially other information. That report shows the risk has existed; it does not establish how common malware is now or say anything conclusive about a particular file you downloaded. Read the 2015 warning.

Story Mode guidance is not blanket approval for every file
Rockstar has a support page specifically for “Policies and guidelines regarding Single-Player or Story Mode mods.” Use that page as the starting point for understanding its current single-player guidance; do not interpret it as a guarantee that every mod is safe, compatible, or permitted in every context. Check Rockstar’s Story Mode mod policies.

Rockstar says account suspensions can follow violations including modding online games, exploiting or abusing online mechanics, manipulating protected game data or code, and interfering with other players. Its BattlEye FAQ says the system is used to detect and prohibit attempts to use cheating software to access GTA Online servers, manipulate protected game code, or sabotage other players’ experience. That describes BattlEye’s stated purpose; it is not a guarantee that every suspicious file will be detected. Keep Story Mode modifications separate from GTA Online, and check Rockstar’s current rules before playing online with an altered installation. Read Rockstar’s online-mod and exploit policy.

Check your GTA V edition before troubleshooting compatibility
Rockstar announced that GTA V Enhanced for PC would launch on March 4, 2025 as a free upgrade for current PC owners; the previous PC version was renamed GTA V Legacy and was to remain supported. Rockstar’s PC store listing includes both editions. A mod’s compatibility depends on the edition and build it supports, so check those details before concluding that a failure means the download is malicious. Disconnecting from the internet is not a dependable substitute for checking files or following online rules. Rockstar says Story Mode generally does not require internet access, but activation, updates, cloud syncing, or online features may require connectivity in some circumstances.
