An antenna-connected over-the-air (OTA) DVR can record and replay free local broadcast channels without a monthly DVR or guide fee. The example used here is the Tablo 4th Generation, which Tablo says has no subscription for its DVR features or guide data. It does not record cable, satellite, or streaming services, and whether a particular device counts as “cheap” depends on current pricing, which this article does not verify. The author’s purchase price and former subscription costs are not covered here, so any savings figure should come from your own numbers.
What an antenna-based DVR does and does not do
An OTA DVR receives free broadcast signals through an antenna, records the programs you choose, and lets you watch live TV, pause it, and replay what you recorded. Its job is limited to local stations that broadcast over the air. It does not carry cable networks, satellite packages, or the libraries of streaming apps. If your current setup is a cable or satellite box with a DVR, the switch covers only the local channels your antenna can pick up.

What Tablo says the 4th Generation includes
Tablo Support describes the 4th Generation as a network-connected DVR for over-the-air broadcasts, with no subscription requirement. Its guide data, apps, software updates, features, and customer support are included. The support page “Does the 4th Generation Tablo Require a Subscription?” states: “There are no subscriptions, contracts or hidden fees with this Tablo model whatsoever.” That statement applies to the 4th Generation only. Earlier Tablo models have different terms, so confirm which model you are buying.
The guide is described as a rolling 14-day window (Tablo Support, 2024). The schedule covers about two weeks ahead and moves forward each day, so you cannot schedule a recording for a show that is not yet in the guide.

- Record and Pause Live TV: You won’t miss your favorite show. (Requires USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 external hard drive up to 2TB connect to this unit; USB flash drive is not recommended)
Storage: onboard space and USB expansion
Tablo’s Quick Start Hub, checked in October 2026, says 4th Generation units have more than 50 hours of onboard storage and can add a compatible USB hard drive from 1 TB to 8 TB. These are manufacturer figures. The hours number is not a fixed capacity for every recording, because the amount that fits depends on recording conditions.
If you add a drive, follow these points:
- Check Tablo’s compatibility list and formatting instructions before you buy or connect a drive.
- Avoid USB flash memory for regular recording. Tablo’s storage article says flash memory may be too slow and is not designed for the high number of write cycles that recording live TV requires.
- Expect capacity to vary with the programs you record; a larger drive gives more room but does not change the recording conditions.
Reception depends on your address and antenna
Tablo’s overview says the device’s tuners support ATSC 1.0, the broadcast standard Tablo describes as supported. That describes the current standard. It is not a promise about future broadcast changes or every market.

Whether a station comes in depends on your location, antenna, and placement. Tablo’s quick-start material identifies inadequate antenna signal as a cause of pixelated video and audio dropouts. Before buying:

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Look up which stations broadcast to your address and the direction and distance of their transmitters.
- Confirm that the stations you watch most are on that list. A DVR cannot receive a station your antenna does not pick up.
- If you already own an antenna and see dropouts, improve its placement before blaming the DVR.
Setup and home network
Because the unit is network-connected and downloads guide data, plan for a working home network during setup. A recent Tom’s Guide review reported that the reviewer spent about 30 minutes waiting for the guide schedule to download, and that streaming trouble cleared after connecting the unit directly to the router with an Ethernet cable. These are one reviewer’s observations. They are not a typical setup time or a guaranteed fix. If your first setup is slow or streaming stutters, a wired connection is worth trying, but it is a reviewer’s workaround rather than a documented remedy.
