Construction is active on the I-10 Wild Horse Pass Corridor between the Phoenix area and Casa Grande. ADOT has reported work north of the Gila River and a major traffic shift near Casa Grande, but the available project updates are not a live, corridor-wide closure calendar. Lane and ramp restrictions can change by date, direction and work shift, so check AZ511 immediately before leaving and again before departure.

The long-range project is expected to finish in late 2029. That is the forecast for the entire four-segment improvement—not a promise that any particular lane closure, ramp restriction or detour will remain in place until then.

The quick facts for I-10 drivers

Question What the dated ADOT updates establish
What project is this? The I-10 Wild Horse Pass Corridor Project, covering approximately 26 miles from Loop 202 in south Phoenix toward SR 387 near Casa Grande.
How is it organized? ADOT describes four project segments.
Where was active work reported most recently? On October 5, 2026, ADOT reported construction on 11 miles in both directions between Loop 202 and the Gila River. A July 22, 2026 update described a traffic shift and continuing work on a 10-mile stretch between SR 387 and Gas Line Road near Casa Grande.
When is the whole project expected to finish? Late 2029, according to ADOT’s 2026 project forecast.
Are today’s closures listed in these updates? No. The updates describe construction areas and traffic shifts, not a complete current list of closure dates, hours and detours.

ADOT’s project description and completion forecast are in its January 9, 2026 overview: Progress Moves Forward on the I-10 Wild Horse Pass Corridor Project.

What is the I-10 Wild Horse Pass Corridor Project?

It is a multiyear reconstruction and widening program on I-10 between the Phoenix metropolitan area and Casa Grande. The corridor runs approximately 26 miles from Loop 202 in south Phoenix to the area of SR 387 near Casa Grande. ADOT has divided the work into four segments so widening, interchange reconstruction and bridge work can proceed as separate construction packages.

The completed corridor is intended to provide additional capacity and improve traffic flow. ADOT says the project is expected to help reduce congestion and travel times, but the cited project updates do not provide a numerical estimate for how many minutes a typical trip will save. Treat any claim of a guaranteed time saving as speculation unless ADOT publishes a measured forecast.

The main improvements

  • A third general-purpose lane in each direction across the corridor.
  • High-occupancy-vehicle lanes from Loop 202 to Riggs Road.
  • Reconstruction of the Wild Horse Pass Boulevard, Riggs Road and Queen Creek Road/SR 347 interchanges.
  • A new interchange at Koli Road.
  • A new Seed Farm Road interchange near Casa Grande.
  • Rebuilt or replaced bridge infrastructure, including the Gas Line Road bridge and work at the Gila River crossings.
  • Overhead message boards, freeway cameras and wrong-way detection systems in the northern work area.

The lane, interchange and technology elements above are listed in ADOT’s October 5 update for the Phoenix-side work: Next phase of I-10 widening between Phoenix and Casa Grande begins near Loop 202. The Casa Grande-side interchange and bridge work appears in ADOT’s July 22 update: Crews nearing completion of first of four segments of the I-10 Wild Horse Pass Corridor Project.

Where is construction active?

The locations below are the most specific work descriptions in the dated ADOT releases. They should not be read as a promise that every lane in each area is closed, or that the same restriction applies every day.

Area ADOT update and date Work or traffic condition described What a driver should infer
Loop 202 to the Gila River October 5, 2026 Construction on an 11-mile stretch in both directions. The work includes the third general-purpose lane, HOV lanes toward Riggs Road, interchange reconstruction, the Koli Road interchange and new traffic-management equipment. Expect an active work zone between south Phoenix and the Gila River. The release does not establish a universal closure schedule or delay time.
SR 387/Pinal Avenue to Gas Line Road July 22, 2026 Traffic had been shifted to the outer lanes on a 10-mile stretch. Crews were working on the third lane in both directions, the Pinal Avenue/SR 387 interchange, Seed Farm Road, the Gas Line Road bridge and removal of the Dirk Lay Road bridge. Drivers approaching Casa Grande may encounter a different lane pattern than on a normal trip. The July description is a dated condition, so verify whether it still applies on your travel day.
Gila River bridges July and October 2026 updates The July release said the bridges were nearing completion. The October release said finishing touches were scheduled for the following month. This is a forecast from those releases, not confirmation that the bridges are complete or unrestricted on October 16, 2026.
Other portions of the four-segment corridor Project-level information Work is part of the overall widening and interchange program. The available releases do not provide a complete day-by-day list of restrictions for every segment.

What I-10 closures are near Phoenix and Casa Grande?

The dated corridor releases do not establish a current, complete list of ramp closures, lane closures, overnight work windows or full freeway shutdowns. They identify where construction and traffic shifts are occurring, but they are not a substitute for a live traffic feed.

That distinction matters because a restriction can be limited to one direction, one interchange or one short work window. A notice that was accurate during an earlier bridge operation may no longer describe today’s route. Do not treat an old detour map, social-media post or cached search result as a current closure notice.

How to check before you leave

  1. Open ADOT’s AZ511 traffic service using the agency’s traffic-information guidance: ADOT News and AZ511 alert guidance.
  2. Set the travel date and approximate departure time, then select the direction you will drive. A northbound trip toward Phoenix and a southbound trip toward Casa Grande can have different restrictions.
  3. Review incidents, lane restrictions, ramp closures and construction alerts along the specific portion of I-10 you will use, including Loop 202, Wild Horse Pass Boulevard, Riggs Road, Queen Creek Road/SR 347, SR 387/Pinal Avenue and Gas Line Road as applicable.
  4. Set AZ511 alerts for incidents, lane restrictions and closures if your trip is recurring. ADOT says the service supports these alert types.
  5. Check again shortly before departure. Work plans can move because of weather, field conditions, traffic control changes or the progress of a preceding operation.

If AZ511 shows a restriction, follow the detour and flagger instructions posted for that event. The corridor updates do not support one universal alternate route for every closure, so choosing a detour without checking the affected interchange can put you back into the same work zone.

Are there detours on I-10 near Casa Grande?

There may be event-specific detours, but the available ADOT updates do not identify a current, permanent detour for the Casa Grande portion of I-10. Near Casa Grande, the July update described traffic shifted to the outer lanes between SR 387 and Gas Line Road while crews worked on lanes, interchanges and bridges. A lane shift is not automatically a signed off-freeway detour, and it does not prove that a ramp is closed.

Use the restriction type shown in AZ511 to decide what the notice means:

  • Lane restriction: Traffic remains on I-10, but fewer lanes or a changed lane pattern may reduce operating space.
  • Ramp closure: The freeway may remain open while a particular entrance or exit is unavailable. The correct alternate depends on the ramp and direction.
  • Full closure: Traffic must leave I-10 and follow the signed detour. The start and end points in the alert matter more than the general project name.
  • Traffic shift: Lanes are moved into a different configuration, such as the outer-lane arrangement reported near Casa Grande. This can exist without a full closure.

Because the sources do not publish a fixed route comparison, there is no evidence-based “best detour” that applies to every Phoenix-to-Casa Grande trip. Compare the date, time, direction, affected interchange and restriction type in the live alert before selecting an alternate route.

Will I-10 construction delay my trip?

Plan for extra time, but do not rely on a made-up delay number. ADOT’s project updates confirm active construction and lane changes; they do not quantify the additional minutes drivers should expect. Congestion can vary with the hour, direction, incident activity, merging traffic and the exact work operation.

Use a route-specific planning check

  • Check the full corridor, not only your origin and destination. A trip that begins in Phoenix can encounter a restriction near the Gila River or Casa Grande.
  • Allow additional time for reduced speeds, lane changes and merging even when AZ511 shows no full closure.
  • Recheck the return trip separately. A southbound restriction may not mirror the northbound pattern.
  • If you must arrive at a fixed time, use the current AZ511 travel conditions and alerts rather than the late-2029 project completion date to set your departure time.
  • Follow posted work-zone speeds and signs. Do not move across solid lines or use a closed shoulder to bypass a queue.

The 11-mile northern work area and the 10-mile Casa Grande traffic shift are measurements of construction limits, not measurements of delay. Neither figure tells you how long your personal trip will take.

How long will I-10 construction last?

ADOT’s current corridor forecast is completion in late 2029 for all four segments. That date describes the program’s expected end state, including the widening, interchange work, bridges and associated systems. It does not mean every segment will be under restriction continuously until late 2029, nor does it guarantee that every task will finish on the same day.

Construction schedules are staged. One segment can move into finishing work while another begins a new traffic shift. The Gila River bridge updates illustrate why dates need qualification: in July 2026 ADOT said the bridges were nearing completion, while its October update said finishing touches were scheduled for the following month. Those statements indicate an expected sequence, not a confirmed present-day completion status.

What drivers should watch at each interchange

Loop 202 and the south Phoenix approach

This is the northern end of the corridor described in the October 5 update. The reported work includes the start of the third general-purpose lane in each direction and HOV lanes toward Riggs Road, along with overhead message boards, cameras and wrong-way detection. Check for lane-use signs and merging traffic before entering the project limits.

Wild Horse Pass Boulevard and Riggs Road

ADOT lists both interchanges for reconstruction. A reconstruction project can affect ramps and crossroad access at different times, so a notice for one interchange should not be assumed to apply to the other. Use the exact ramp name in the AZ511 alert.

Queen Creek Road/SR 347 and Koli Road

The Queen Creek Road/SR 347 interchange is being reconstructed, while Koli Road is receiving a new interchange. New or rebuilt ramps can produce temporary access changes even when I-10 itself remains open. Confirm the entrance or exit you need before following a navigation app’s suggested turn.

SR 387/Pinal Avenue and Seed Farm Road

Near Casa Grande, the July update places this work within the 10-mile traffic-shift area. The Pinal Avenue/SR 387 interchange is being improved and Seed Farm Road is receiving a new interchange. The safest assumption is that lane placement and ramp availability can change as each stage advances; check the live notice for your direction.

Gas Line Road and Dirk Lay Road

The Casa Grande-side work includes the Gas Line Road bridge and removal of the Dirk Lay Road bridge. These are separate pieces of the corridor program, so a bridge operation may have a different restriction from the adjacent freeway widening. Read the alert details rather than relying on the project name alone.

How to interpret the late-2029 forecast

Use the forecast for long-term planning, not for today’s navigation. A completion date answers “When is the overall program expected to be done?” It does not answer “Which ramp is closed on my Tuesday morning trip?” The first question is answered by ADOT’s project schedule; the second requires AZ511 close to the travel time.

For a reliable decision, match four details: your travel date and time, direction of travel, affected segment or interchange, and restriction type. If any of those are missing from a notice, verify the alert again before departure. This approach prevents a corridor-wide forecast from being mistaken for a daily closure timetable.

Bottom line for Phoenix–Casa Grande drivers

I-10 widening and interchange construction is underway as part of ADOT’s approximately 26-mile, four-segment Wild Horse Pass Corridor Project. The October 2026 update places active work between Loop 202 and the Gila River, while the July update describes a 10-mile traffic shift and continuing construction between SR 387 and Gas Line Road near Casa Grande. The overall project is forecast to finish in late 2029, but no supplied update provides a complete current closure or detour calendar. Check AZ511 for the exact date and direction, allow extra time, and verify conditions again just before leaving.
