Hyundai’s Body-On-Frame Truck Plan: What the Boulder Concept Really Signals

Hyundai’s body-on-frame truck push did not begin with the Boulder Concept. The company announced a North American midsize-pickup plan in 2025, then used the Boulder, revealed in April 2026, to preview the architecture it says will underpin that production truck. Hyundai frames the move as an expansion into vehicle segments where it is underrepresented—not as a change to the existing Santa Cruz.

Why is Hyundai making a body-on-frame truck?

Hyundai says body-on-frame vehicles and light commercial vehicles are “white spaces” in its lineup: segments where it is underrepresented. At its 2026 CEO Investor Day, the company characterized those areas as roughly 29 percent of automotive sales. That figure is Hyundai’s description of the opportunity, not an independent market estimate. Hyundai’s 2026 CEO Investor Day materials present the strategic rationale.

A body-on-frame pickup would let Hyundai compete in a different category from its current compact pickup. The company says it intends to compete in the midsize segment and describes the future vehicle’s intended appeal around off-road capability, towing, hauling and utility. Those are goals, not confirmed production specifications or test results.

Hyundai’s CEO José Muñoz said, “Body-on-frame vehicles are the backbone of American work and adventure, and we intend to compete in the midsize pickup segment with everything we have.” That is the company’s positioning, not an independent assessment of the market. Hyundai’s April 1, 2026 announcement also places the truck within a broader North American product push: Muñoz said Hyundai plans 36 new vehicles for the region by 2030.

What is the Boulder Concept—and is it a real truck?

The Boulder is an SUV-shaped design study, not a production pickup. Hyundai revealed it at the New York International Auto Show on April 1, 2026, saying the concept previews a fully boxed body-on-frame architecture intended for a production midsize pickup. The concept makes the previously announced truck plan visible, but it is not evidence that the production truck will look or perform exactly like the study. Hyundai’s concept announcement describes its status and intended role.

Hyundai has not established the production truck’s final design, powertrain, price, towing capacity, payload, bed or cab configurations, or specific off-road equipment in the announcements cited here. Those details should not be inferred from the Boulder concept or its stated aims.

How is the planned truck different from the Santa Cruz?

The Santa Cruz is Hyundai’s compact unibody pickup in the U.S.; the planned truck is a midsize pickup using body-on-frame construction. Hyundai cites its experience and brand presence from the Santa Cruz, launched in 2021, as relevant background for the new effort. That does not make the vehicles the same type of truck, nor does it establish that Santa Cruz accessories will fit the future model. Hyundai’s 2025 pickup announcement introduced the plan and referenced the Santa Cruz.

MotorTrend has reported that the midsize pickup is expected to be the first production vehicle from Hyundai’s new body-on-frame line. That is secondary reporting; Hyundai’s cited announcements do not establish a decision to discontinue the Santa Cruz.

When is Hyundai’s midsize pickup coming out?

Hyundai’s timing language points to the end of the decade, but it does not establish a retail on-sale date. The company’s 2025 roadmap said it would launch its first North American midsize pickup before 2030. Its April 2026 global Boulder announcement says the truck is planned by 2030, while Hyundai’s U.S. concept page gives 2029. These are company plans, not a confirmed production start month or date customers can expect to buy one. The 2025 announcement and Hyundai USA’s concept page state the respective timing.

What does Hyundai mean by building it in America?

Hyundai says future body-on-frame vehicles will be designed and developed for America and built in America using Hyundai U.S. steel. This expresses a localization intent, but does not provide a complete production-site or supplier breakdown for the pickup. Hyundai’s 2026 Investor Day materials describe that commitment.

Hyundai’s separate 2025 roadmap set a company-wide target of producing more than 80 percent of vehicles sold in the United States domestically by 2030, while increasing local supply-chain content from 60 percent to 80 percent. Those goals apply to the company’s broader U.S. business; they are not a truck-specific sourcing commitment. The same roadmap outlined KRW 77.3 trillion in planned investment from 2026 through 2030—KRW 30.9 trillion for research and development, KRW 38.3 trillion in capital expenditure and KRW 8.1 trillion in strategic investment. Those are corporate totals, not a disclosed budget for this pickup program. Hyundai’s 2025 CEO Investor Day materials provide the figures.

What remains unknown

  • The production truck’s final name, exterior and interior design.
  • Powertrain, drivetrain options and body or bed configurations.
  • Pricing, towing and payload ratings, and production specifications.
  • Its precise production start, retail launch date and availability.
  • A detailed production-location and supplier breakdown.

Hyundai has announced a strategic direction and shown a concept that previews the intended architecture. Until the company publishes production details, the Boulder should be read as a signal of intent—not as a specification sheet for a truck customers can order.
