Hyundai Tucson Reliability and Common Problems to Check Before Buying Used

By Freedom251 Team · · 11 min read

There is no single reliability verdict for every Hyundai Tucson. Model-year results vary sharply: Consumer Reports’ surfaced summaries describe the 2017 Tucson as less reliable than other cars from that year, the 2020 and 2023 models as about average, and the 2024 model as much more reliable than its peers. Those are survey-based, year-level signals—not a diagnosis of any particular used vehicle.

Before buying, evaluate the exact Tucson in front of you. Run its 17-character VIN through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall lookup, obtain service and recall-repair records, and pay for an independent pre-purchase inspection. Treat online complaints and owner comments as clues to investigate, not proof that every Tucson has the same defect.

What the available reliability evidence actually says

Consumer Reports says its reliability information is based on subscriber survey responses about reported trouble spots. Its surfaced Tucson summaries show why a blanket statement such as “Tucsons are reliable” or “Tucsons are unreliable” is misleading.

Model year Consumer Reports surfaced assessment How to use that information
2017 Less reliable than other cars of the same model year Use the result as a reason to scrutinize maintenance, repairs and condition more closely; it does not establish that every 2017 vehicle will fail.
2020 About average Neither a clear warning nor a guarantee. The individual vehicle’s history and inspection remain decisive.
2023 About average Compare the candidate’s records and condition rather than assuming the year alone determines reliability.
2024 Much more reliable than peers A favorable year-level signal, but still not a substitute for a VIN check, service records and a mechanical inspection.

These summaries describe populations of surveyed vehicles. They do not provide a verified Tucson-wide failure rate, an average repair bill, or a guaranteed service-life figure. No such lifetime statistic or repair-cost dataset was established for this buying guide, so a seller’s claim that a Tucson will last a particular number of miles should not be treated as an evidence-based promise.

Why the model year matters

A used Tucson’s age affects wear, previous ownership, software updates and the number of years in which maintenance may have been skipped. A newer year can still be a poor purchase if it was neglected, crashed or left with an open recall. Conversely, an older Tucson with complete records and a clean inspection can be a better buy than a newer example with missing history. Use year-level reliability information to set the intensity of your checks, not to make the decision by itself.

“Common problems” need careful interpretation

The evidence does not support calling one mechanical failure the common Tucson problem across all generations. Consumer Reports organizes trouble spots by model year, and the surfaced 2024 owner comments concern in-car electronics rather than a confirmed, universal mechanical defect.

Infotainment and display reports on 2024 vehicles

Owner comments surfaced for the 2024 Tucson mention wired Apple CarPlay disconnecting and screens freezing or going blank. These are anecdotal reports. They should prompt a buyer to test the vehicle’s display, audio, phone integration and backup-camera presentation, but they do not prove that every 2024 Tucson has an electronics failure or indicate the repair needed on a particular car.

Complaints are not a failure rate

NHTSA explains that it reviews consumer complaints together with other information when screening for possible safety issues. It sets no fixed number of complaints that automatically opens an investigation. A complaint count therefore cannot be converted into a percentage of defective Tucsons, and it cannot establish that all vehicles are affected. A complaint is a lead for checking the VIN, symptoms and repair history—not a diagnosis.

Separate four different kinds of evidence

  • Owner report: an individual’s account of a symptom or repair. Useful for deciding what to test, but not proof of prevalence.
  • Complaint: information submitted to NHTSA or another agency. It may contribute to safety screening but does not by itself confirm a defect.
  • Investigation: a government review of a possible safety issue. Its existence still does not mean every vehicle has the condition.
  • Recall: a manufacturer campaign addressing a safety defect or noncompliance. Check whether the specific VIN has an unrepaired recall and whether the remedy was completed.

Check recalls by VIN, not just by model year

A model-year recall list is a starting point only. NHTSA’s lookup distinguishes a general year/make/model search from a VIN-specific result. The general search can show recalls, investigations, complaints and manufacturer communications associated with a model. The VIN search identifies unrepaired recalls associated with that particular vehicle.

What a VIN search can and cannot show

NHTSA notes that its VIN page may not show a repair that has already been completed, a newly announced recall before every affected VIN has been identified, recalls more than 15 years old, or non-safety campaigns. NHTSA also states that once a vehicle has been recalled, the recall never expires. In practical terms, an “open” result requires action, while a “no unrepaired recalls” result is not a substitute for maintenance records or a physical inspection.

Run the check close to the purchase date

  1. Copy the vehicle’s complete 17-character VIN from the dashboard plate, driver-door label and title or registration. Compare the numbers so a seller cannot accidentally—or deliberately—give you the wrong vehicle’s information.
  2. Enter the VIN in NHTSA’s official recall lookup shortly before you buy. A search performed months earlier may miss a newly announced campaign.
  3. Save or print the result, including any campaign number and remedy description.
  4. Ask the seller for invoices or dealer paperwork showing that each listed recall repair was completed. Do not accept “the dealer said it was done” without documentation when records are available.
  5. Call a Hyundai dealer with the VIN if the remedy is unclear. Ask whether the campaign is open, whether parts or software are available, and whether the work can be completed before the sale.

Example: a software recall affecting some 2025–2026 vehicles

A Consumer Reports page surfaced a recall for certain 2025–2026 Tucson, Tucson Hybrid and Tucson Plug-In Hybrid vehicles. A software error may cause the instrument-panel display to fail; the described remedy is an over-the-air or dealer software update. This is VIN-specific. Do not assume every Tucson from those model years is included, and do not assume that a vehicle outside the described group is excluded without checking its VIN.

A step-by-step used-Tucson buying inspection

1. Establish the vehicle’s identity and history

  • Record the VIN, model year, trim, drivetrain and odometer reading.
  • Request the title, registration history and service invoices. Look for consistent mileage entries, scheduled maintenance and explanations for gaps.
  • Ask whether the Tucson was used for towing, ride-hailing, delivery work, off-road driving or long periods of storage. These uses change wear even when the odometer is low.
  • Check for accident, flood or salvage indications in the title and available history records. A clean-looking exterior does not prove that structural or water damage is absent.

2. Inspect the exterior before starting the engine

  • Walk around the vehicle in daylight. Look for mismatched paint, uneven panel gaps, overspray, cracked lamps and signs that bumpers or doors were removed.
  • Compare all four tires. Uneven wear can point to alignment, suspension or accident issues; different brands and tread depths may indicate irregular maintenance.
  • Look underneath for fluid leaks, damaged splash shields, corrosion or fresh undercoating that could conceal repairs.
  • Confirm that the VIN on the dashboard and door label matches the paperwork and the VIN used for the recall search.

3. Test the cabin electronics

Because 2024 owner comments mention wired CarPlay disconnects and frozen or blank screens, test the complete system rather than merely turning the radio on.

  1. Start the vehicle from a cold state if possible and watch the instrument display through startup.
  2. Pair a phone, connect it by cable, make a call, play audio, change tracks and disconnect/reconnect the cable.
  3. Open navigation, audio, climate controls and vehicle settings. Check for delayed response, spontaneous restarts or a screen that goes blank.
  4. Engage reverse and confirm that the camera image appears promptly and remains stable.
  5. Test steering-wheel controls, warning chimes, Bluetooth, USB ports, power outlets, climate controls, seat heaters and driver-assistance alerts fitted to that trim.

Document any intermittent behavior with a short video and ask the seller to have it diagnosed in writing. An electronics symptom that disappears during a brief test drive still belongs on the negotiation and inspection list.

4. Check warning lights and scan the vehicle

  • Turn the ignition on before starting and confirm that the warning lamps illuminate for a self-check. After startup, verify that they go out as expected.
  • During the drive, watch for check-engine, ABS, airbag, charging-system, oil-pressure or temperature warnings.
  • Have an independent technician scan all relevant modules, not only the engine computer. Stored or pending codes may reveal an intermittent problem even when no light is currently on.
  • Ask whether diagnostic monitors are ready. A recently cleared code can leave monitors incomplete and hide a problem until after purchase.

5. Perform a cold-start and road test

Arrange to see the Tucson before it has been warmed up. Listen for abnormal rattles, tapping, grinding or prolonged cranking, and observe the exhaust after startup. On the road, test smooth acceleration, transmission engagement, braking in a safe area, steering tracking, suspension noise over representative bumps and operation at both city and highway speeds. Try every selectable drive mode fitted to the vehicle. A qualified inspector—not an online complaint count—must determine whether a noise or behavior indicates a serious mechanical fault.

6. Pay for an independent pre-purchase inspection

Use a shop that is not financially tied to the seller. Provide the VIN and ask for a written report covering leaks, fluid condition, brakes, tires, suspension, steering, underbody damage, corrosion, diagnostic codes, accident evidence and recall-related work. Ask the technician to distinguish an immediate safety issue from normal wear and from a repair that can reasonably wait. If the seller refuses an independent inspection, treat that refusal as a material buying risk and be prepared to walk away.

Factor Questions to ask Why it matters
Model year How does the year-level Consumer Reports signal compare, and are there year-specific campaigns? Reliability indicators vary by year, but they describe groups rather than the individual car.
Configuration Is it gasoline, hybrid or plug-in hybrid? Which trim and equipment are fitted? The reviewed evidence does not establish that one Tucson engine or powertrain is categorically the most reliable. Configuration determines which systems must be inspected.
Maintenance records Are oil, filter, brake, tire and other scheduled services documented with dates and mileage? Records show whether the previous owner followed a maintenance plan and help explain gaps.
Mileage and use Is mileage consistent with the title and service entries? Was use severe or commercial? Wear depends on time, conditions and use, not just the odometer.
Condition What did the independent inspection and road test find? Physical evidence is more specific to the candidate than population-level complaint discussions.
VIN-specific recall status Are there open campaigns, and is completion documented? Only the VIN result and repair paperwork establish the candidate’s current recall position.

If one Tucson has a less favorable year-level signal but complete records, a clean inspection and no open recalls, while another has a more favorable year label but missing history and unresolved symptoms, the documented condition should carry more weight than the headline year comparison.

Questions to ask the seller before you make an offer

  • What is the VIN, and may I run it through the NHTSA lookup myself?
  • Which recall repairs and software updates have been completed, and can I see the invoices?
  • Has the vehicle ever displayed a warning light, lost its instrument display, frozen its infotainment screen or disconnected phone integration?
  • When was the last service, at what mileage, and who performed it?
  • Has the vehicle been in a collision, flood, fire or insurance auction?
  • Are there any current leaks, noises, starting problems or intermittent electrical symptoms?
  • Will you allow a cold start, an extended road test and an independent inspection?

Ask for written answers where possible. A verbal assurance that a symptom is “normal” should not replace a technician’s diagnosis.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them

Relying on a model-year recall count

Recall eligibility changes and is not identical for every vehicle in a year. Use the exact VIN close to purchase and obtain proof of completed repairs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reading complaints as proof of a defect

NHTSA complaints are one input to safety screening, not a failure-rate calculation. Use them to identify questions for your inspection and to look for a confirmed campaign, investigation or repair record.

Assuming a newer Tucson is automatically safer

A newer vehicle can have incomplete maintenance, crash damage or an open campaign. Age is one factor in a documented, condition-based decision.

Skipping the scan because no warning light is on

Pending and stored codes, incomplete monitors and intermittent faults may not trigger a visible lamp during a short visit. Include a full diagnostic scan in the inspection.

Accepting an incomplete history because the price is attractive

The available evidence does not establish a universal Tucson repair cost, so a low purchase price cannot be balanced against a predictable “average” bill. Price the vehicle only after a technician identifies its actual deferred work.

Decision framework: when to buy, negotiate or walk away

Proceed toward a purchase

  • The VIN matches all documents and has no unexplained identity issue.
  • Open recalls are absent, or the seller provides verifiable completion records and a dealer confirms the status.
  • Maintenance history is coherent for the mileage and use.
  • The independent inspection finds no unresolved safety-critical defect.
  • Electronics, displays, driver aids and the powertrain perform consistently during the test.

Negotiate only with a documented repair plan

  • The inspection finds ordinary wear items with clear parts and labor estimates.
  • A non-safety software or infotainment symptom is reproducible and the seller agrees in writing to a dealer diagnosis or remedy.
  • Records are incomplete but the technician can verify current mechanical condition and you have enough budget for evidence-based deferred maintenance.

Walk away

  • The seller will not provide the VIN or blocks an independent inspection.
  • The VIN, title, dashboard and door labels do not agree.
  • A safety warning remains on, the vehicle has severe structural or flood evidence, or a technician cannot establish safe operation.
  • An open recall has no available remedy or the seller refuses to document completion.
  • Important symptoms are dismissed without diagnosis, especially intermittent display, camera, braking, steering or starting problems.

What this evidence cannot tell you

The available sources do not provide a verified lifetime failure rate for the Tucson, a typical repair bill, a guaranteed maximum mileage, or a defensible ranking of the most reliable Tucson engine or powertrain. They also do not justify a single cross-generation list of mechanical failures. Those limits are important: a used-car decision requires evidence from the specific VIN, records and inspection rather than invented precision.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
