HyperX Cloud III vs. Cloud II: Which Wired Gaming Headset Should You Buy?

Buy the wired HyperX Cloud III if you need the most clearly documented connection flexibility, a specified 10mm detachable microphone, and broad stated support for PC, consoles, Mac, and mobile. Choose the wired Cloud II when it is meaningfully cheaper, you prefer its familiar control-box setup, or the exact Cloud II package better matches your system. The Cloud III is an evolution of the Cloud II, but available evidence does not establish it as a universal sound-quality upgrade.

The short answer

For a new purchase, Cloud III is the safer default. HyperX documents three ways to connect it—3.5mm analog, USB-C, and USB-A—and includes a USB dongle, USB-C-to-USB-A adapter, detachable microphone, and two-year warranty. Its compatibility list covers PC, PlayStation 5 and 4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Mac, and mobile devices.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Cloud II still makes sense when its street price is substantially lower or you specifically want its established 3.5mm-plus-USB-control-box arrangement. HyperX continues to list the wired model, and deals can make it a strong value. Check the exact revision, included accessories, and return policy before ordering because Cloud II catalog information is less detailed and can vary by configuration.

Neither driver size nor a frequency-response range proves which headset sounds better to you. The reviewed sources contain no controlled, same-condition Cloud II-versus-Cloud III listening test. Treat sound conclusions as personal preference informed by attributed reviewer impressions, not as a definitive technical win.

  • Comfort is King: Comfort’s in the Cloud III’s DNA. Built for gamers who can’t have an uncomfortable headset ruin the flow of their full-combo, disrupt their speedrun, or knocking them out of the zone.
  • Audio Tuned for Your Entertainment: Angled 53mm drivers have been tuned by HyperX audio engineers to provide the optimal listening experience that accents the dynamic sounds of gaming.
  • Upgraded Microphone for Clarity and Accuracy: Captures high-quality audio for clear voice chat and calls. The mic is noise-cancelling and features a built-in mesh filter to omit disruptive sounds and LED mic mute indicator lets you know when you’re muted.
  • Durability, for the Toughest of Battles: The headset is flexible and features an aluminum frame so it’s resilient against travel, accidents, mishaps, and your ‘level-headed’ reactions to losses and defeat screens.

What each headset is

Cloud III

Cloud III is a closed-back, over-ear wired headset with an aluminum frame, memory-foam/leatherette cushions, angled 53mm dynamic drivers, earcup volume and mute controls, and a detachable 10mm noise-cancelling microphone with an LED mute indicator. HyperX describes it as an evolution of Cloud II, retaining the Cloud family’s comfort-oriented design while changing the driver tuning, microphone specification, and connection package.

The official specification lists a 10Hz–21kHz frequency response and a listed weight of 0.67 lb, or 0.70 lb with microphone. Those are manufacturer figures; they do not predict comfort or tonal preference for every listener.

Cloud II

The wired Cloud II catalog listing highlights 53mm drivers, virtual 7.1 surround sound, an advanced audio control box, and a detachable noise-cancelling microphone. HyperX’s broad “Cloud Specifications” support page lists closed construction, 15Hz–25kHz response, 60 ohms, 350g with microphone and cable, and a 3.5mm connection. Because that support page is not clearly tied to one exact Cloud II wired revision, use those numbers as support-page Cloud specifications rather than guarantees for every retail package.

Specification comparison

Feature Cloud III wired Cloud II wired
Design Closed-back, over-ear; aluminum frame Closed-back; exact frame material not stated in the cited catalog/support material
Driver Angled 53mm dynamic drivers 53mm drivers
Frequency response 10Hz–21kHz (official Cloud III specification) 15Hz–25kHz on HyperX’s broad Cloud Specifications support page; exact Cloud II revision not identified
Connections 3.5mm, USB-C, and USB-A via the included dongle/adapter 3.5mm; catalog listing also advertises a USB audio-control box, with exact package varying by version
Microphone Detachable 10mm noise-cancelling mic; LED mute indicator Detachable noise-cancelling mic; exact microphone specification not stated in the catalog listing
Controls Earcup volume and mute controls Advanced audio control box advertised in catalog copy
Listed weight 0.67 lb headset; 0.70 lb with microphone 350g with microphone and cable on the broad Cloud Specifications page; revision applicability is unclear
Included items Headset, detachable mic, USB dongle, USB-C-to-USB-A adapter, quick-start guide Catalog listing does not provide a complete variant-specific contents list
Warranty Two years listed by HyperX Not stated in the cited Cloud II material
Stated platforms PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Mac, mobile Not presented as a complete platform list in the cited catalog/support material

The table shows why Cloud III is easier to specify and match to a mixed-device setup. It does not establish that its 53mm drivers or response range produce objectively better sound than Cloud II.

Connections and device compatibility

Cloud III: the more flexible package

Cloud III’s documented options cover the three ports most buyers encounter: a 3.5mm plug for analog headset jacks, USB-C through the included dongle, and USB-A through the included adapter. That lets one headset move between a desktop, a laptop with USB-C, and a controller or handheld using 3.5mm without buying a separate cable for each scenario.

HyperX lists PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Mac, and mobile compatibility. “Compatible” does not mean every control or processing feature works identically everywhere. A console may expose only a controller’s analog jack, a phone may need a USB-C audio setting or adapter, and a computer may provide additional USB controls. Confirm the ports on your exact controller, dock, and phone before purchase.

Cloud II: straightforward analog, version-dependent USB

The support-page specification identifies a 3.5mm connection, while the catalog description promotes an advanced audio control box and virtual 7.1 surround sound. That combination is useful on a PC with a spare USB port, but the exact box, cable layout, and console behavior depend on the Cloud II version sold. Do not assume every listing includes the same accessories simply because it says “Cloud II.”

What to check before ordering

  • For a console, identify whether you will plug into the controller, a USB port, or a console-specific adapter.
  • For a laptop or phone, check whether it has USB-C, USB-A, or a headset jack and whether USB audio is enabled.
  • For Nintendo Switch, verify handheld versus docked use; the available port and microphone behavior can differ.
  • For PC, decide whether you want analog audio or USB controls and processing. Test the selected output and microphone input after connecting.

Microphone, controls, and chat

Cloud III’s documented microphone changes

Cloud III specifies a detachable 10mm noise-cancelling microphone and an LED mute indicator. The mute light gives a quick visual check, while the earcup controls keep volume and mute within reach. GamesRadar’s reviewer reported clear voice capture during testing, and TechRadar’s 2026 roundup praised microphone clarity and noise rejection. Those are reviewers’ judgments from their own Cloud III use, not a laboratory comparison with Cloud II.

Cloud II’s familiar control-box approach

Cloud II catalog copy advertises a detachable noise-cancelling microphone and an advanced audio control box, including virtual 7.1 surround sound. The control box can be convenient at a desk, but its presence and exact functions should be confirmed in the individual listing. The cited material does not provide a Cloud II microphone diameter, LED behavior, or complete per-platform control map.

Choosing for voice chat

Choose Cloud III when microphone documentation and an on-headset mute indicator matter most. Choose Cloud II if you already know you like its control box and the specific package includes everything your PC setup needs. In either case, select the headset microphone as the input device, disable duplicate microphone processing in chat software, and make a short recording before a tournament or work call.

Sound: what is known and what is not

Cloud III impressions

TechRadar describes Cloud III’s sound as detailed with strong bass, while noting that its soundstage is not special. GamesRadar’s review also found the headset suitable for long sessions and everyday gaming. These comments can help set expectations, but they are subjective assessments of one unit and listening environment.

Cloud II context

HyperX positions Cloud II around comfort, sound quality, durability, 53mm drivers, and virtual 7.1 processing. The available material does not include a current, controlled Cloud II listening test against Cloud III. Individual results can change with fit, ear shape, source device, equalizer settings, game mix, and whether virtual surround is enabled.

  • Quick, Convenient Audio and Mic Controls: Dodge annoying in-game and system menus. Quickly adjust the headphone volume and mute your microphone with controls right on the Cloud III’s earcup.

Why specifications cannot settle the choice

A 53mm driver in both models does not mean identical tuning, and a wider numerical frequency range does not guarantee deeper bass, clearer dialogue, or better positional cues. The Cloud III’s angled drivers and 10Hz–21kHz specification describe design choices, not a ranking. If sound is your only deciding factor, buy from a seller with a practical return window and compare both under the same game, volume, and processing settings.

Comfort and construction

Both product families use memory-foam and leatherette-style cushioning, a design intended to support long gaming sessions while sealing outside noise. Cloud III officially lists an aluminum frame, which can appeal to buyers who want a more explicitly documented structural material. GamesRadar reported comfortable extended sessions with Cloud III, but head width, glasses, clamping force, heat, and ear shape make comfort personal.

Cloud II’s support-page weight is 350g with microphone and cable, though the page is not clearly tied to every Cloud II revision. Cloud III’s listed weight is 0.67 lb, rising to 0.70 lb with microphone. Because the figures are presented in different units and configurations, do not treat them as a direct comfort ranking. The best practical check is fit: the earcups should surround your ears, the headband should not create a pressure point, and the microphone should sit near the corner of your mouth without touching it.

At those snapshots, Cloud III cost only a few dollars more than Cloud II. That small gap favors Cloud III’s extra documented connections and microphone details. If Cloud II later falls substantially below Cloud III, its value case becomes stronger. Compare the same wired version, seller return terms, warranty coverage, and included accessories rather than relying on a headline discount.

How to choose: a practical decision framework

Pick Cloud III when most of these are true

  • You switch among USB-C, USB-A, and 3.5mm devices.
  • You want a detachable 10mm microphone with an LED mute indicator documented by the manufacturer.
  • You use a mixture of PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, Mac, and mobile hardware.
  • The current price difference is small enough that the included dongle and adapter have real value to you.
  • You prefer controls on the earcup instead of relying on a separate desktop control box.

Pick Cloud II when most of these are true

  • The exact Cloud II wired package is materially cheaper after shipping and taxes.
  • Your main device already has a 3.5mm headset jack and you do not need USB-C flexibility.
  • You prefer the familiar USB control box and its advertised virtual 7.1 feature.
  • You have used Cloud II before and know its fit and sound suit you.
  • The listing clearly identifies the revision, microphone, control box, and cables you require.

Wait or reconsider either model when

  • The listing does not identify whether it is wired, wireless, or a different Cloud revision.
  • The seller cannot confirm the included microphone or USB hardware.
  • Your console setup needs a feature that is available only through a specific USB path.
  • The return policy is too restrictive to test fit and microphone positioning.

Setup instructions after purchase

Cloud III on a PC or Mac

  1. Choose USB-C for a computer with a USB-C port, or connect the USB dongle and use its USB-C-to-USB-A adapter for a USB-A port.
  2. Open the operating system’s sound settings and select the Cloud III playback device and microphone.
  3. Set the headset volume with the earcup control, then adjust application volume separately.
  4. Use the microphone mute control and confirm the LED indicator changes state.
  5. Record a short sample in your chat app. If your voice is quiet, move the mic near the corner of your mouth and check that the app did not select the laptop’s built-in microphone.

Cloud III through a controller or handheld

  1. Connect the 3.5mm plug to the controller or handheld headset jack.
  2. Set chat output and microphone input to the connected headset in the platform settings.
  3. Check that the controller’s volume and mute behavior work as expected; USB-only functions are not necessarily available through the analog connection.
  4. Test handheld and docked modes separately on a Switch because their available ports differ.

Cloud II with the control box

  1. Confirm the box and its cables are included in the package you bought.
  2. Connect the headset and then connect the box to USB if you want its advertised PC controls or virtual 7.1 feature.
  3. For a controller, use the 3.5mm path when supported and verify chat input and output independently.
  4. In your PC sound settings, select the correct playback and microphone devices; the analog and USB paths may appear as different choices.

Common buying and setup mistakes

Assuming every Cloud II listing is identical

Cloud II specifications and included accessories are not presented as one exhaustive, revision-specific sheet in the cited material. Read the exact listing, photograph, model number, and box contents. A low price may reflect a different bundle, regional packaging, or an open-box unit.

Calling Cloud III a guaranteed audio upgrade

Cloud III changes the driver design and microphone package, but no controlled head-to-head test establishes that it sounds better for every listener. Avoid buying solely because both models use 53mm drivers or because one response range looks wider on paper.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using the wrong connection

A headset can appear connected while the computer or console still uses its internal speakers and microphone. After plugging in, select the headset explicitly, check the input meter, and test game audio and chat separately.

Ignoring returns and regional pricing

The cited prices are US snapshots from October 2026. Taxes, shipping, stock, color, region, and seller policies can change the final cost. Confirm the return window before opening the package, especially if comfort is a deciding factor.

Verdict

For most new buyers, the wired Cloud III is the better default because its three documented connection types, included USB hardware, specified detachable 10mm microphone, earcup controls, and broad platform list reduce compatibility guesswork. It is particularly well suited to someone who moves between a PC, console, laptop, and phone.

The wired Cloud II is still a rational purchase when a verified package is considerably cheaper or when its familiar control box and virtual 7.1 feature fit your desk setup. Make the decision on the exact listing and your actual ports, not on driver diameter or an assumed generational sound victory.
