Choose the SteelSeries Arctis Nova 1 for a lower-cost, analog-only setup; the Logitech G Pro X Wired if you use a PC and want microphone processing and USB controls; or the Drop + EPOS PC38X if an open-back design and spacious presentation matter more than isolation. None is a universal upgrade: your controller or console port, room noise, microphone priorities, and fit should decide the purchase.
At a glance: which Cloud III alternative fits your use?

SoundGuys praised the Cloud III’s comfort and design but criticized aspects of its sound. That is a reviewer’s judgment, not a prediction of how every listener will hear it. The alternatives below target different compromises rather than promising a blanket improvement.

What the Cloud III already does—and why replace it?
The Cloud III is a wired, closed-back, over-ear headset with a detachable boom microphone. SoundGuys identifies 3.5 mm, USB-A and USB-C connectivity, giving it more connection options than an analog-only headset. Its closed cups can help reduce outside sound and prevent game audio from spilling into the room, while the over-ear shape is intended for longer sessions.
That feature set makes the Cloud III a useful reference point. An alternative is worthwhile when one of its trade-offs conflicts with your setup: you may want a simpler analog plug, more PC microphone controls, or an open-back soundstage. Comfort is especially difficult to predict from specifications. Head shape, glasses, clamping force, pad material and session length can change the result for each person.

SteelSeries Arctis Nova 1: the straightforward, lower-cost choice
Why it is different
The Arctis Nova 1 is the clearest choice when you want to spend less and avoid a USB feature layer. Tom’s Hardware describes it as analog-only, while SoundGuys highlights its retractable microphone, comfort and broad platform support. The practical appeal is simple: connect the headset through the analog jack available on your computer, controller or other compatible device and avoid software-dependent controls.
Check the connector before ordering
“Analog-only” does not guarantee that every console, controller or laptop exposes the same jack in the same place. Confirm whether your target device accepts the headset’s plug directly, requires a controller connection, or needs a separate adapter. Also check the exact Nova 1 variant; connector details and included accessories can vary by market or package.
What you give up
An analog connection does not provide the USB sound-card functions associated with the Logitech G Pro X Wired. You should not expect PC software microphone processing from the Nova 1 simply because it is used with a computer. Its retractable boom is convenient for storage and casual use, but the available comparison material does not establish that its microphone will outperform the Cloud III in every room or voice-chat application.

Logitech G Pro X Wired: the PC microphone and software option
Why PC users may prefer it
The Logitech G Pro X Wired includes a detachable microphone and a USB sound card. On a compatible PC setup, Logitech’s Blue VO!ce tools provide microphone customization. RTINGS found that the microphone records clearly and filters background noise well, making this the most feature-oriented option in this group for voice chat and streaming adjustments.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.

Software is part of the value
The USB sound card and Blue VO!ce features matter only if you connect and configure them. If you use the headset through a plain analog jack, those PC processing benefits do not transfer unchanged. Console users should not assume that a profile created in PC software will be available through the console’s controller connection. Treat the headset as two different experiences: a software-enhanced PC setup and a simpler wired connection elsewhere.
Sound and isolation caveats
RTINGS also reports that the sound is not fully consistent and that noise isolation is limited. Those findings are important if you are choosing the Pro X specifically to block a noisy room. A clear microphone does not automatically mean strong passive isolation, and a software filter cannot remove every environmental sound before it reaches the earcups.
Who should choose it
- PC players willing to install and use the headset’s software controls.
- Streamers and team-chat users who want adjustable microphone processing.
- People who prefer a detachable boom for transport or replacement.
- Buyers who accept that the strongest feature set is PC-focused rather than platform-neutral.
Drop + EPOS PC38X: an open-back alternative
What open-back changes
The PC38X is a wired, open-back gaming headset. SoundGuys lists a wide soundstage and good microphone performance among its strengths. An open-back enclosure allows more interaction with the room instead of sealing the ear in a closed cup. In a quiet home environment, that design can produce a more spacious presentation and lets you remain aware of nearby sounds.
The unavoidable trade-off
Open-back cups leak sound in both directions. People nearby may hear your game, and room noise can reach you more easily. If you play beside other people, near a television, or in a loud household, a closed-back headset such as the Cloud III may be the safer design. The PC38X’s wide presentation is a product characteristic, not a guarantee that every listener will prefer its tonal balance or sense of distance.

Microphone and room requirements
SoundGuys reports good microphone performance, but your room still matters. Because the earcups do not isolate you strongly, nearby voices, fans and keyboard noise remain part of the recording environment. Position the boom consistently and test voice chat in the same room where you normally play.
Who should choose it
- Players in quiet rooms who prioritize an open, spacious presentation.
- People who want some awareness of their surroundings.
- Users who do not mind sound leakage.
- Anyone seeking a fundamentally different acoustic design rather than another closed-back headset.
Other wired models mentioned in comparisons
SoundGuys also lists the Razer Kraken V3 as a PC-first wired option with THX Spatial Audio and software customization, and identifies the SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro as a high-end wired option. The available material does not establish current prices, exact variants or a complete connection specification for those models, so verify the current product page and package contents before treating either as a direct recommendation.
RTINGS places the Razer BlackShark V2 and SteelSeries Arctis Pro GameDAC among peers to the Logitech G Pro X. Their strengths differ across comfort, sound and connectivity. That makes them useful comparison points when the three primary alternatives do not fit, but not automatic substitutes. Confirm the version, included hardware and target-platform support for the particular listing you are considering.
Connection and platform checklist
Wired does not mean every headset works identically with every device. Use this checklist before choosing a model:

- Anti-Slip Surface - Transform your laptop into a mobile workstation with the AboveTEK portable laptop lap desk. The anti-slip surface provides a strong grip for laptops up to 15.6 inches(Diagonal), while the double rubber strip on the bottom ensures a stable display or typing experience on your lap, couch, or bed.
- Retractable Mouse Pad - Retractable laptop mouse pad extends on both directions for the left/right handed with elevation along the edges for stopping mouse from falling off. The size of laptop tray is 14" X 9.7" and the size of mouse pad is 7.4" X 6.1".
- Effective Heat Shield - The effective heat shield made of sturdy and thick material protects your laptop from overheating. Prioritizes your comfort and safety, an ideal lap pad or board for working anywhere.
- EASY to Carry and Store - With an ergonomic and simplistic design, the lap desk is portable to store in a backpack. Only 15" in size, 2.2 lb of weight and with slim 0.6 inch thickness, it is ready to be easily carried around.
- Widely Applicable - The smooth platform accommodates laptops and tablets up to 15.6 inches(Diagonal), making it a versatile accessory and one of the best gifts for mom, dad, students and professionals. Perfect for use as a laptop bed tray or tablet holder anywhere at home, library, or park.
- Identify the device you will use most. Write down the computer, console, handheld or controller model and whether it has a headset jack, USB-A port or USB-C port.
- Match the headset’s connection. The Cloud III is documented with 3.5 mm, USB-A and USB-C options. The Nova 1 is analog-only. The Pro X’s USB sound card is most relevant to a PC connection. The PC38X is wired, but confirm the cable and adapter supplied with the exact package.
- Check the controller path. A headset may connect to a console through the controller rather than the console itself. Make sure the controller jack supports both game audio and microphone input.
- Confirm included adapters. Do not assume a USB cable, splitter or console adapter is in the box. Retail packages can differ by region and variant.
- Decide whether software is realistic. If you play mainly on console, choose based on the headset’s direct hardware connection. If you play on PC, decide whether you will actually install and maintain the manufacturer’s control software.
Microphone differences that matter in practice
Detachable versus retractable booms
A detachable boom can be removed for storage or when you use another microphone. The Cloud III and Logitech G Pro X Wired use detachable microphones. The Nova 1 uses a retractable microphone, so it stays attached and slides away when not needed. Neither arrangement alone proves better recording quality; placement, room noise and processing are equally important.
Hardware voice quality versus processing
The Pro X is the only option here with a specifically documented USB sound card and Blue VO!ce customization. RTINGS reports clear recording and effective background-noise filtering in its assessment. That is a reason to consider it for PC chat, not evidence that the same processing is available through every platform. For the Nova 1, PC38X and Cloud III, judge the microphone primarily through their direct hardware connection and your room conditions.
Closed-back or open-back?
| Priority | More suitable design | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Blocking room noise and limiting leakage | Closed-back | Sealed earcups generally provide more isolation than open-back designs. |
| Awareness of nearby sounds | Open-back | The room remains more audible through the enclosure. |
| A spacious-feeling presentation in a quiet room | Open-back | The PC38X is specifically described by SoundGuys as having a wide soundstage. |
| Playing beside other people or in a noisy room | Closed-back | Open-back leakage and reduced isolation can be disruptive. |
This is a design decision, not a ranking. The PC38X changes the listening experience more radically than another closed-back model, while the Cloud III and the other alternatives are easier to use where isolation matters.

Best Value
- Spacious Design: Measuring 21.1" wide and 12" deep, our lap desk comfortably fits most laptops up to 15.6". Extra room for accessories ensures convenience.
- Enhanced Functionality: Packed with handy features, including a 5x9" precision tracking mouse pad and a built-in phone slot for seamless work or video calls. Plus, enjoy laptop support with the integrated device ledge.
- Cool Comfort: Enjoy a stable surface with our lap desk's dual bolster cushion, designed for comfort and airflow, keeping your lap cool during extended use.
- Durable Surface: Work with confidence on our lap desk's solid surface, featuring a blush pink color, ensuring optimal air circulation to prevent your laptop from overheating.
- On-the-Go Convenience: With an integrated handle and lightweight design (2.14 lbs), our lap desk is portable for travel or moving around the house, offering flexibility in any space.
- Clamping force: A tight seal can improve stability but become tiring during long sessions.
- Ear-pad contact: Your ears should fit inside the pads rather than press against the drivers or frame.
- Glasses: Frames can break the seal on closed-back cups and create pressure at the temples.
- Session length: A headset that feels fine for a short match may become uncomfortable after several hours.
SoundGuys specifically praised comfort and design on the Cloud III and highlighted comfort for the Nova 1. Those are useful review observations, not guarantees. If possible, buy from a seller with a clear return policy and test the headset during your normal session length without removing protective films or altering the pads.
A practical decision framework
Choose the Nova 1 when simplicity comes first
Pick the Arctis Nova 1 if your priority is a lower-cost wired headset with an analog connection and a retractable microphone. Verify the port and variant first, especially for console-controller use.
Choose the Pro X when PC controls justify the extra complexity
Pick the Logitech G Pro X Wired if you will connect its USB sound card to a PC and use Blue VO!ce. It is the strongest match for software microphone control, but its benefits should not be assumed on consoles, and RTINGS reports limited noise isolation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choose the PC38X when openness matters more than isolation
Pick the Drop + EPOS PC38X if your room is quiet, you want an open-back design and you accept leakage. It is not the right structural choice for a noisy environment where closed cups are more important.
Keep the Cloud III when its connectivity and fit already work
If you need multiple connection options, prefer a closed-back headset and are comfortable with the Cloud III, changing models may solve a problem you do not actually have. Sound quality assessments differ by listener, so use a return window or in-person test when sound is the main reason for switching.
Setup and troubleshooting
No sound through an analog connection
- Push the plug fully into the headset jack or controller.
- Open the device’s audio output menu and select the wired headset or controller output.
- Check the inline controls, system volume and game-specific chat mixer.
- If the device uses separate headphone and microphone sockets, use the correct splitter or adapter for that hardware.
The microphone is missing
- Confirm that the boom is fully inserted on detachable models.
- For a retractable model, extend the microphone and check its mute position.
- Choose the headset microphone as the input device in the operating system, console or chat app.
- On PC, test the Pro X through its USB sound card before changing Blue VO!ce profiles.
Voice chat sounds processed or unnatural
Disable or reduce software filters one at a time. Blue VO!ce profiles can alter compression, equalization and noise treatment; a profile that removes background sound can also change your voice. Compare a neutral setting with the processed profile while monitoring the same room noise.
Open-back audio is too distracting
Move the PC38X to a quieter room or switch to a closed-back model. Software cannot remove the fundamental leakage and reduced isolation caused by an open-back enclosure.
Quick Recap
What to verify before purchase
- Current regional price and stock, since neither is fixed in the available reviews.
- Exact model variant and included cables or adapters.
- Compatibility with your console, controller or computer port.
- Whether PC software supports your operating system and whether you will use it.
- Return conditions, particularly if comfort or open-back leakage is uncertain.
