A hypersonic missile is a maneuverable weapon designed to fly through the atmosphere at at least Mach 5—five times the local speed of sound. Its danger is not speed alone: a vehicle that stays relatively low, changes course and follows a non-ballistic path can be detected later and predicted less reliably than a conventional ballistic trajectory.
Modern systems generally fall into two categories. A hypersonic glide vehicle (HGV) is accelerated by a rocket, then separates and glides through the atmosphere while using aerodynamic lift to maneuver. A hypersonic cruise missile (HCM) remains powered in atmospheric flight, usually with an air-breathing scramjet after a booster brings it to operating speed. Neither design is automatically unstoppable, and their performance depends on sensors, guidance, propulsion, materials and the defender’s engagement geometry.

What “hypersonic” means
NASA describes hypersonics as atmospheric flight faster than Mach 5. Mach is a ratio, not a fixed miles-per-hour figure: the local speed of sound changes with altitude, temperature and atmospheric composition. The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) used about 3,800 mph as an approximate reference in 2019, but that conversion should not be treated as a universal speed limit.
GAO’s July 29, 2024 operational definition is narrower than the headline number. An offensive hypersonic weapon travels above Mach 5, spends most of its flight inside the atmosphere, can maneuver in flight and is intended to provide an operational strike capability. Ballistic missiles can also exceed Mach 5; current hypersonic-weapon discussions usually emphasize sustained atmospheric maneuvering and less predictable trajectories.

How the two principal designs work
Hypersonic glide vehicles
An HGV rides a rocket booster through the initial acceleration and climb. At high speed and altitude, the glide body separates, descends or re-enters the denser atmosphere and generates lift with its shape. It is unpowered during the glide phase but can bank, turn and change altitude, making its future position harder to calculate than that of a body following a simple ballistic arc.
The booster provides the energy; the glide body trades altitude and speed for range while steering toward its target. Its flight profile is a compromise among reach, heating, maneuver room and the need to remain below or outside portions of an opponent’s sensor and interceptor coverage.
Hypersonic cruise missiles
An HCM stays in powered atmospheric flight. A rocket or another booster first accelerates it to the speed at which its air-breathing engine can function. A scramjet—short for supersonic-combustion ramjet—compresses incoming air while keeping combustion supersonic. It takes oxygen from the atmosphere instead of carrying an oxidizer, reducing onboard oxidizer mass but imposing demanding inlet, combustion and control requirements.

NASA’s X-43A demonstration separated from a rocket near Mach 7 and then flew under scramjet propulsion. NASA notes that ordinary ramjets suffer increasing shock losses much above Mach 5; keeping combustion supersonic helps a scramjet retain useful net thrust in the hypersonic regime.
HGV and HCM compared
| Characteristic | Hypersonic glide vehicle (HGV) | Hypersonic cruise missile (HCM) |
|---|---|---|
| Launch and boost | Rocket booster accelerates and lofts the glide body, which then separates. | Booster accelerates the missile until its air-breathing engine can operate. |
| Glide or powered phase | Unpowered atmospheric glide using aerodynamic lift and control surfaces. | Powered atmospheric flight, typically using a scramjet. |
| Altitude profile | Usually begins high after boost, then descends and maneuvers within the atmosphere; the exact profile is design-dependent. | Atmospheric cruise at an altitude compatible with engine operation, aerodynamics and mission range. |
| Maneuverability and predictability | Can alter course and altitude during glide, complicating extrapolation from radar tracks. | Can maneuver while powered, with trajectory shaped by engine operation, guidance and available airspace. |
| Propulsion and carried fluids | Rocket supplies initial energy; the glide body does not need an operating engine for the glide. | Must manage atmospheric air flow and fuel; the scramjet uses atmospheric oxygen rather than a carried oxidizer. |
| Thermal-protection burden | Severe heating during high-speed atmospheric flight and maneuvering. | Severe heating plus the additional challenge of keeping the inlet and combustor functioning in hot, fast airflow. |
| Sensor visibility | Lower or changing flight paths can delay detection and make the track less predictable. | Low atmospheric flight can also reduce radar horizon and warning time; engine plume and altitude vary by design. |
| Potential defensive engagement phase | Defense may have to detect and engage during boost, glide or terminal approach, depending on sensors and interceptor reach. | Defense must find and engage a continuously powered atmospheric target, often at low altitude and with limited time. |
How fast do hypersonic missiles travel?
The robust answer is Mach 5 or faster. Because Mach uses the local speed of sound, the same Mach number corresponds to different mph values at different altitudes and temperatures. “Mach 10” therefore describes a ratio, not a constant ground speed, and a missile can slow, accelerate or change altitude during its mission while remaining hypersonic for part of the flight.
The X-43A program illustrates the engineering consequences of higher speed. NASA’s Mach 10 research vehicle required additional thermal protection because expected heating was roughly twice that of the Mach 7 vehicle. Those figures come from a research program, not a universal rule for every weapon shape.

Why interception is so difficult
Late detection from low flight
Radar is limited by the horizon and by terrain and atmospheric conditions. A vehicle flying lower can remain hidden from a ground-based sensor until it is comparatively close to the defended area. That reduces the time available to classify the object, authorize a response, launch an interceptor and correct its course.

Traditional ballistic defense can exploit a largely predictable arc after a missile’s boost phase. An HGV can change heading and altitude during its glide, while an HCM can continue maneuvering under power. GAO identifies this mid-flight maneuvering as a central tracking challenge: a fire-control solution based on an earlier track may become obsolete after the attacker turns.
A compressed engagement window
The combination of delayed detection and maneuvering can leave decision-makers and defenders potentially only one intercept attempt, according to the Congressional Research Service (CRS). The issue is not merely reaction time; command systems must also decide what the object is and where it is going before authorizing a shot.

Interceptor geometry and energy
The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) explains the geometric problem: an interceptor must be close enough to engage before the attacker maneuvers again, or it must retain enough energy to respond to that maneuver and still arrive in time. A fast interceptor launched from the wrong location can lose the engagement simply because it cannot turn or climb sufficiently within the remaining distance.
Persistent sensing and coordination
Effective defense requires a sensor architecture that can maintain a track across changing altitudes, a command-and-control network that can pass that track quickly and an interceptor designed for the target’s speed and maneuver envelope. GAO’s counter-hypersonic work at the Missile Defense Agency reflects an active engineering and acquisition effort, not proof that any particular defense is universally effective or ineffective.

Extreme aerodynamic heating
Shock waves compress the air in front of a hypersonic vehicle and create a hot shock layer. NASA’s thermophysics guidance describes shock-layer gas temperatures reaching about 6000 K in hypersonic flows. The vehicle’s surface does not simply reach that gas temperature, but the heat load can still damage structures, sensors, control surfaces and propulsion components.
Best Value
NASA also says thermal-protection behavior cannot be predicted reliably by analysis alone. Developers therefore use arc-jet facilities and high-temperature wind tunnels to measure materials and components under representative heating. The X-43A Mach 10 work, with expected heating roughly double that of the Mach 7 vehicle, shows why a modest increase in speed can require major changes in protection.
Scramjet operating limits
A scramjet must slow and compress incoming air enough to mix and burn fuel while keeping the flow supersonic. Too much shock loss, poor inlet control or a change in altitude can reduce or eliminate useful thrust. The engine, fuel system, thermal protection and flight-control system must work together across a narrow operating envelope.
Guidance, control and communications
At hypersonic speed, a small steering command can produce a large position change over a short time, while heating and ionized flow can complicate sensors and communications. The vehicle must know its position, withstand rapid aerodynamic changes and steer accurately despite uncertain atmosphere and material behavior. These are system-level problems rather than single-component challenges.
Can hypersonic missiles be shot down?
Yes, in principle, but no general statement can guarantee a successful or unsuccessful intercept. The outcome depends on the missile’s altitude and maneuver pattern, when and where it is detected, the defender’s sensor coverage, interceptor performance, command authority and the geometry between the two vehicles.
Defenders can seek opportunities in several phases:
- Boost: detect and attack the launch vehicle or missile before separation, if sensors and interceptor locations provide a viable shot.
- Glide or cruise: maintain a track and launch an interceptor able to reach the target’s altitude and maneuver envelope before it changes course.
- Terminal approach: use point or area defenses when the target is close enough for local sensors and interceptors, accepting the shortest warning time.
Layered defense—distributed sensors, rapid data links, suitable interceptors and redundant engagement opportunities—is therefore more important than a single advertised speed figure. The same physics that makes a weapon difficult to stop also gives defenders engineering targets: detect it earlier, track it continuously, improve interceptor agility and protect critical areas with overlapping coverage.
Quick Recap
What to remember
- Mach 5 is the conventional threshold, but Mach is relative to local sound speed and does not equal one fixed mph value.
- HGVs are rocket-boosted bodies that glide and maneuver; HCMs remain powered in the atmosphere, commonly with a scramjet after booster acceleration.
- Low altitude, maneuvering and non-ballistic paths can delay detection and make prediction harder, compressing the time for a defensive decision.
- Heating, materials, scramjet operation, guidance and testing make hypersonic systems difficult to build as well as difficult to defend against.
- “Hypersonic” does not mean “unstoppable.” Interception is an active sensor, command-and-control and interceptor-design problem whose result depends on the specific engagement.
