Hydrothermal vents and terrestrial hot springs (the “warm ponds” in this comparison) each supply credible ingredients for prebiotic chemistry, yet each also creates serious chemical problems. Geological rocks can show that a setting existed, and laboratory experiments can show that particular reactions work under selected conditions. Neither result alone demonstrates that life began there.
The strongest conclusion is therefore comparative rather than definitive: vents are attractive for continuous water–rock energy and mineral pores, while hot springs are attractive for evaporation, wet–dry cycling and surface concentration. The evidence does not yet identify which setting, if either, hosted the first self-sustaining evolving system.

What the two hypotheses actually propose
“Warm ponds” is shorthand for terrestrial hot springs, geyser fields and shallow surface pools, not every temperate pond. The comparison asks where simple geochemical reactions could have become organized into increasingly complex chemistry and, eventually, an evolving biological system.
A credible origin-site hypothesis must do more than provide a source of organic molecules. It must offer energy, concentrate reactants, support formation and survival of polymers such as nucleic acids and peptides, provide some form of compartment, and remain chemically suitable long enough for selection and replication to matter. No known site has been shown to satisfy all of those requirements simultaneously.

How a hydrothermal-vent origin could work
Continuous energy from water–rock reactions
Submarine hydrothermal systems bring chemically distinct fluids into contact with ocean water. Water–rock reactions can maintain redox disequilibria, while temperature and, in some settings, pH gradients provide potential energy sources. Minerals lining vent channels can act as catalysts or as surfaces where reactants meet rather than dispersing immediately through the ocean.
Alkaline vents are especially important in origin-of-life models because their porous mineral structures resemble inorganic compartments. Microscopic pores could separate chemical mixtures, establish gradients across thin mineral walls and allow repeated cycles of reaction and exchange. This is a proposed mechanism, not evidence that a particular ancient vent performed those functions.
Concentration inside mineral pores
Open seawater dilutes newly formed compounds. Vent chimneys and “chemical-garden” structures offer a possible solution by confining reactants locally. A pore can hold molecules near catalytic minerals and maintain a gradient even while the surrounding ocean remains dilute.

That advantage depends on details that are difficult to reconstruct. Pore sizes, flow rates, mineral composition, salinity and pH would determine whether useful compounds accumulated, escaped, or were destroyed. A compartment that retains reactants may also trap them so tightly that they cannot react with incoming partners.
Vent liabilities
Deep-sea vents do not normally provide the repeated wet–dry cycles that are central to many surface-chemistry scenarios. Other energy-coupled routes could, in principle, drive condensation in continuously aqueous systems, and shallow or intermittently exposed vent settings might behave differently. The absence of wet–dry cycling is therefore a limitation of deep-water models, not a universal objection to every vent environment.
Some alkaline conditions can favor formation of insoluble phosphate minerals, reducing the availability of phosphate for useful prebiotic reactions. The same review literature notes that certain alkaline vent chemistries may destabilize RNA. Protocells would also have to regulate salinity across mineral boundaries; maintaining a workable internal composition in a strongly saline environment is a substantial problem.

How a hot-spring or warm-pond origin could work
Evaporation and wet–dry cycling
On land, water can evaporate from a shallow pool and later return through rain, groundwater or overflow. Evaporation raises local concentrations of salts and organic compounds. Drying and rewetting can bring reactants together repeatedly, potentially favoring condensation reactions that are difficult in permanently dilute water.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHot-spring systems also create sharp temperature, pH and chemical gradients where hot fluids mix with cooler surface water. Sunlight can supply energy for photochemical reactions. Borates, nitrates and phosphates may become concentrated in particular evaporative settings, depending on the minerals and fluids present.
Minerals and surface compartments
Clays and other minerals provide heterogeneous microenvironments. They can adsorb molecules, separate reactants and influence reaction pathways. Pools themselves are larger compartments than mineral pores, while cracks, films and grains can create smaller niches with different chemistry.
Adsorption is not automatically beneficial. A clay that protects one molecule may remove it from solution, preventing it from reacting with another. Whether a mineral surface functions as a catalyst, a shelter or a chemical sink depends on its composition, the solution’s pH and the timing of wetting and drying.
Surface liabilities
Shallow pools expose organic compounds to solar and cosmic radiation. Radiation can drive useful chemistry, but it can also destroy fragile molecules. Low-pH fluids can hydrolyze polymers, and heat can accelerate degradation. A wet–dry cycle may concentrate reactants and then damage the products during the same cycle.
Surface environments are therefore not simply gentler versions of vents. Their proposed advantage is dynamic cycling, but that cycling creates repeated opportunities for hydrolysis, oxidation and photochemical damage. Any hot-spring model must specify which microenvironment protects products between concentration events.

The shared polymer problem: water is both solvent and obstacle
Proteins and nucleic acids are condensation polymers: building blocks must join while a small molecule, often water, is released. In an aqueous environment, the reverse reaction—hydrolysis—competes with bond formation. Whitaker and Powner describe this paradox directly: “Water is essential for life as we know it, but it has paradoxically been considered inimical to the emergence of life.”
This issue applies to both settings. A vent model must explain how polymers form and persist without ordinary drying. It may invoke mineral confinement, gradients or chemically activated precursors that retain energy for bond formation. The review discusses nitriles as one type of energy-rich precursor strategy for peptide synthesis; it does not show that such a route operated at a particular ancient vent.
A hot-spring model can use drying to raise concentrations and promote condensation, but the resulting products must survive reheating, rehydration, acidity and radiation. A cycle that makes a polymer during drying but hydrolyzes it during the next wet phase is not sufficient. The relevant question is the net balance across many cycles, including whether products remain available for further reaction.
Because polymerization is a shared bottleneck, the presence of a concentration mechanism does not by itself decide the debate. Vents need a credible aqueous energy-coupling route; hot springs need a credible protection-and-retention route.
What the ancient rocks actually show
Pilbara geyserite and stromatolites
A 2024 geological and chemical review reports geyserite— a mineral formed in surficial hot springs—interbedded with stromatolite fossils in a setting dated to about 3.5 billion years in the Pilbara Craton. This demonstrates that surface hydrothermal environments existed in a geological context that also contains stromatolites.

It does not date the origin of life, identify the first organism’s habitat or prove that the stromatolite-forming organisms emerged in that hot spring. Rocks preserve only a fraction of ancient environments, and the same region may have contained connected pools, groundwater, shoreline settings and other niches.

Why early biological traces are difficult to interpret
Lyons, Tino, Fournier and co-authors write in a 2024 Nature Reviews Microbiology review that “The earliest vestiges of life are recognized mostly in isotopic fingerprints of specific microbial metabolisms, whereas fossils and organic biomarkers become important later.” Isotopic signatures can indicate that microbial metabolism occurred, but they usually do not specify the exact place where life first emerged.
A mineral record can establish that a vent, spring or other environment existed. An isotope record can indicate biological activity. Linking either observation to the birthplace of life requires additional evidence about transport, preservation and continuity that the available record does not provide.

Chemical gardens and glycine formation
A 2025 article in Chem, “Chemical gardens as analogs for prebiotic chemistry on ocean worlds,” reports glycine formation under selected laboratory conditions in chemical-garden systems designed as hydrothermal-vent analogues. The result shows that a vent-like mineral architecture can support at least one prebiotic reaction in an experiment.
It does not provide a natural-vent yield, demonstrate that early-Earth vents had the same composition, or show a pathway from glycine to an evolving biological system. The experiment tests chemical possibility under chosen conditions; it does not establish that those conditions coexisted, persisted or were geographically widespread on the young Earth.

Experiments isolate variables. They may select a mineral, pH, temperature, flow rate or precursor concentration because those choices allow a reaction to be measured. Early environments contained changing mixtures, impurities and competing reactions. A successful laboratory pathway becomes historically persuasive only when geology, geochemistry and systems chemistry independently support the same set of conditions.
Best Value
The same standard applies to surface experiments. Showing that drying can concentrate molecules or promote a bond does not establish that a natural spring repeated the required cycles, protected the products and supplied the next reactants.
What evidence would be needed to favor one setting?
A stronger case for either hypothesis would connect several types of evidence rather than relying on one striking observation.
- Environmental continuity: geological evidence that the relevant minerals, fluids, energy gradients and physical cycles coexisted in the same setting.
- Chemical compatibility: demonstrated formation of nucleotides, peptides or other essential intermediates under that setting’s complete, realistic chemistry—not just in an isolated reaction.
- Protection and persistence: measurements showing that products survive long enough to accumulate rather than being hydrolyzed, photodestroyed, adsorbed irreversibly or flushed away.
- Compartment behavior: evidence that pores, films, clays or pools can retain useful mixtures while still allowing exchange and growth in chemical complexity.
- Systems-level progression: a plausible sequence from geochemical reactions to self-maintaining, heritable chemistry. Producing one amino acid or one polymer is far short of this requirement.
- Geological signatures: ancient mineral or isotopic patterns that distinguish the proposed pathway from unrelated geological processes.
At present, the reviewed sources do not supply this complete chain for vents or hot springs.
Could life’s origin involve more than one environment?
The alternatives need not be mutually exclusive. Early environments may have exchanged material through groundwater, shorelines, atmospheric transport or ocean circulation. A compound could form in one setting, become concentrated or modified in another, and encounter a mineral compartment elsewhere.
The 2024 geological review cautions that early environments need not have operated in isolation and allows for mixing or multiple genesis events. This possibility changes the question from “Which single site won?” to “Which linked sequence of environments supplied the missing steps?” A vent could provide sustained redox chemistry while a nearby surface system supplied drying and concentration, or vice versa. Such combinations remain hypotheses, not established historical reconstructions.
How to interpret a new claim about the origin site
- Identify the setting precisely. “Hydrothermal” can refer to deep submarine vents, shallow systems or surface springs with very different chemistry.
- Separate observation from inference. A mineral proves that a mineral-forming environment existed; it does not prove that life originated there.
- Check the timescale. A reaction that works in minutes in a laboratory may not persist under geological flow, dilution and replenishment conditions.
- Look for the missing side of the cycle. Concentration must be paired with protection, and polymer formation must be paired with survival and reuse.
- Ask whether the result is one reaction or a network. Glycine formation, nucleotide synthesis or a single membrane-like structure is evidence for a step, not for a complete origin pathway.
- Demand an uncertainty statement. A responsible conclusion should specify which conditions were measured, which were assumed and which remain unknown.
Verdict: the evidence supports a comparison, not a winner
Hydrothermal vents currently offer the clearest case for persistent water–rock energy, redox gradients and mineral pores. Terrestrial hot springs offer the clearest case for evaporation, wet–dry cycling, sunlight and surface concentration. Vents face problems with phosphate availability, RNA stability, salinity control and aqueous polymerization; hot springs face radiation damage, hydrolysis, heat and the possibility that clays trap rather than help organic molecules.
The Pilbara geyserite record supports the existence of ancient surface hydrothermal settings, while isotopic traces of early metabolisms show that life was present in the deep past without locating its birthplace. The 2025 chemical-garden experiment demonstrates selected glycine formation in a vent analogue, not life in a natural vent. Taken together, these findings leave the central question open. The most defensible scientific position is that neither hydrothermal vents nor warm ponds has yet been established as the birthplace of life, and that a linked sequence of environments may ultimately explain how prebiotic chemistry crossed that threshold.
