Hydrogen provides more lift per volume than helium in NASA’s cited comparison, but it is flammable; helium offers slightly less lift without hydrogen’s ignition hazard. For an RC airship, the right choice depends first on what the model’s documentation permits, then on its actual lift margin, operating location, and current local gas costs.
How do hydrogen and helium compare?

The lift figures come from NASA’s “Airships 101: Rediscovering the” presentation. They are a standard-condition comparison, not a payload guarantee for a particular RC envelope. The helium figure is 65 lbf per 1,000 ft³, or about 93% of the hydrogen figure—not 93% of a model’s usable payload.

What does the lift advantage mean for an RC model?
Lift from the gas is only the starting point. NASA expresses usable lift as displaced-air lift minus dead weight: “Useable Lift = Vol * (ρair − ρHe) * g − Wdead.” In practical terms, the envelope has to displace enough air to support the craft’s weight before any payload can be carried.

A gas’s per-volume lift advantage cannot tell you whether a specific model will fly until you know its envelope volume and total mass. NASA’s presentation also notes that fuel, ballast, crew, and consumables reduce cargo lift in the airship example it discusses; for an RC model, the relevant lesson is to count every component rather than treating gas lift as available payload.

Why is hydrogen’s safety tradeoff significant?
Hydrogen is flammable when mixed with air. NASA’s 50th Anniversary Edition Scientific Ballooning Handbook reports a flammable range of 4–74% hydrogen by volume in air and a minimum ignition energy of 0.02 mJ at 30% hydrogen by volume. The handbook notes that sparks too small to see may ignite a mixture at that concentration.
Those figures describe general hydrogen hazards, not the probability of an accident with an RC model. The handbook identifies three handling priorities: prevent hydrogen from accumulating, control ignition sources, and detect gas and fire. It also notes that open-air ventilation helps leaks dissipate and warns about accumulation inside enclosed structures. These concerns make the launch site, storage and filling arrangements, and ability to control leaks part of the gas decision—not just the airship’s performance.

Helium avoids hydrogen’s flammability and ignition concern, though the cited sources do not provide an RC-specific risk score or compare every aspect of handling the two gases. Do not treat the hydrogen lift advantage as a reason to overlook the fire hazard.

Which gas is approved for your airship?
Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model before selecting a gas. FAA guidance for captive gas balloons says, “You may only use those gasses that are approved for use in your balloon,” and directs operators to the operator’s manual or the balloon’s type certificate data sheet. That advice is specific to FAA-regulated balloon contexts; it is not, by itself, a universal rule for every small RC airship.

The FAA’s Piloted Balloons page says some balloons are approved for gases such as hydrogen or “city gas.” For regulated airship contexts, the FAA’s airship policy index points to 14 CFR Parts 21, 43, and 91 and airship certification guidance; that index does not establish which requirements apply to a particular small RC model. Do not infer that a gas is acceptable for your craft from general balloon or airship guidance alone.

There is no established universal winner for current RC-airship gas costs. A 2007 NASA high-altitude unmanned-airship concept report described hydrogen as less expensive and more readily available in that design’s context, while noting that precautions would be needed to prevent combustion. It did not compare current consumer cylinder or refill prices.

To compare your own costs, get current local quotes for the gas and the quantity your model needs. Include delivery or cylinder charges, refill terms, and how often you expect to fill the envelope. A small model and a large envelope can have different practical costs even in the same region. A party-balloon helium tank should not be assumed suitable: confirm gas grade, pressure, cylinder, and connector compatibility against the model’s documentation and supplier information.

How to choose for a particular RC airship
- Read the model documentation. Confirm the allowed lifting gas and any stated filling or operating restrictions before buying or filling anything.
- Estimate usable lift. Use the envelope volume and intended operating conditions, then subtract the complete model weight—including batteries and payload—from the gas’s displacement lift.
- Assess the operating setting. Consider whether filling, storage, and flight will take place where hydrogen could accumulate or encounter an ignition source. If you cannot manage those hazards, hydrogen’s higher reported lift is not a sufficient reason to choose it.
- Compare delivered local costs. Request quotes for the required gas volume and account for cylinder or delivery charges and refill terms rather than relying on a general claim that one gas is cheaper.
- Use compatible equipment and follow supplier guidance. Do not assume an available cylinder or connector is suitable, and do not improvise gas-generation or handling methods.
