A 2026 preprint reports that a multilayer coating for AZ31 magnesium alloy—plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO), cerium hydrothermal sealing, and a silane layer containing 8-hydroxyquinoline (8HQ)—substantially slowed corrosion in laboratory salt-water tests. The authors measured a nearly 100-fold improvement in corrosion resistance after 16 days in 3.5% sodium chloride and an 80% lower hydrogen-evolution rate than an unsealed PEO coating after 30 days. Those figures apply only to the study’s specimens and test conditions; the source is a preprint that may not yet have been peer reviewed.
What the hybrid coating is
The treatment was applied to AZ31 magnesium alloy, whose nominal composition in the study was 96 wt% magnesium, 3 wt% aluminum and 1 wt% zinc. Instead of relying on one film, the researchers built a sequence of layers designed to combine physical barriers with chemical inhibition:

- PEO: a plasma electrolytic oxidation layer formed directly on the magnesium.
- Cerium hydrothermal treatment: a cerium-containing step intended to seal pores and cracks in the porous PEO coating.
- Silane sealing: an APTES/TEOS network added over the hydrothermal layer.
- 8HQ inhibitor: 8-hydroxyquinoline incorporated into the silane condition to add an active corrosion-inhibition effect.
The experimental comparison separated these contributions rather than treating the stack as a single unexplained formulation.

How the authors prepared it
The reported protocol used 10 × 10 × 2.5 mm AZ31 coupons. The samples were polished and solvent-cleaned before PEO processing at 400 V for 10 minutes in a stirred electrolyte containing potassium hydroxide, sodium silicate and sodium phosphate. The PEO-treated coupons then received a hydrothermal treatment in 0.1 mol/L cerium chloride at 120 °C for 75 minutes.

For the silane layer, the study mixed APTES and TEOS at a 50:50 ratio in a solvent containing 80% water and 20% ethanol. The solution was adjusted to pH 5 and aged overnight. The inhibitor-containing formulation additionally included 8HQ. These details describe the preprint’s laboratory protocol, not an independently validated production recipe.

How well it protected AZ31 in the reported tests
Electrochemical corrosion resistance
In 3.5% NaCl immersion, the authors report “nearly a 100-fold enhancement in corrosion resistance” after 16 days. This is a study-specific electrochemical result, not evidence that the coating multiplies service life by 100 under real operating conditions. The comparison is meaningful because the paper tested the complete stack against progressively less-complete treatments, but the reported factor still depends on the authors’ measurement method, specimen preparation and exposure schedule.

Hydrogen evolution
Magnesium corrosion can generate hydrogen, so the study also tracked hydrogen evolution during immersion. After 30 days, the complete Ce–8HQ hybrid had an 80% lower hydrogen-evolution rate than the unsealed PEO coating, according to the authors. The reference here is specifically PEO without the later sealing layers; it is not a claim that hydrogen generation was eliminated.
Coating integrity over time
The source describes the hybrid coating as remaining largely intact through 432 hours of immersion (18 days) and still adhered after 1100 hours (about 45.8 days). It also reports corrosion signs and deterioration as exposure progressed. “Remained adhered” therefore should not be read as permanent or defect-free protection: adhesion persisted while the coating and substrate showed evidence of ongoing degradation.

Why cerium and 8HQ are included
The authors propose a complementary mechanism. Hydrothermal cerium-containing material fills or blocks pathways through the porous PEO layer, while the APTES/TEOS silane forms another barrier network over that sealed surface. If corrosion sites become active, released cerium species are proposed to deposit at those sites and impede the reactions. The paper further proposes that 8HQ reacts with magnesium to form an insoluble magnesium chelate, adding an inhibitor effect to the physical barriers.
This is the paper’s interpretation of how the layers work together, rather than a universally established mechanism for every Ce–8HQ coating or every magnesium environment. The practical design idea is nevertheless clear: PEO supplies the base conversion layer, cerium addresses its defects, silane adds a continuous sealing network, and 8HQ supplies localized chemical inhibition.

What the evidence does—and does not—show
- Supported by the report: large improvements in the stated electrochemical comparison, lower hydrogen evolution than unsealed PEO after the stated exposure, and adhesion of the hybrid coating at the reported time points.
- Not established by these data: outdoor durability, performance in humidity or temperature cycling, behavior under wear or impact, compatibility with industrial application lines, toxicity or environmental handling requirements, and a guaranteed operating lifetime.
- Evidence status: the result comes from one Research Square preprint by Shahsanaei and colleagues, dated April 2026. The source warns that preprints may not have been peer reviewed; an independently replicated or later journal-published result was not established here.

Bottom line for readers evaluating the claim
Under the authors’ controlled 3.5% NaCl immersion conditions, the Ce–8HQ hybrid was the strongest-performing condition in the reported coating sequence: nearly 100-fold higher corrosion resistance after 16 days and 80% lower hydrogen evolution than unsealed PEO after 30 days. Those are promising laboratory results for AZ31, but they remain results from a single, potentially unreviewed preprint—not a validated field-life multiplier or a commercially proven coating system.
