In Hunter x Hunter, the Hunter Exam is a dangerous, multi-stage test, but getting through its visible stages does not make a candidate a fully recognized Hunter. VIZ’s own recap says Gon is certified after the exam, then says he cannot be officially recognized as a true Hunter until he learns and masters Nen. VIZ’s volume 7 description calls those Nen lessons the secret final test. This guide explains the exam, why each applicant enters, where Nen comes into the story, and how VIZ’s summaries sequence certification and recognition. It describes the fictional series only and is not real-world training advice.

What is the Hunter Exam in Hunter x Hunter?

VIZ describes the Hunter Exam as a qualification that tests applicants both mentally and physically. Its arc recap, “Welcome to Hunter x Hunter!” by Urian Brown and dated January 24, 2018, presents the exam as a series of stages involving endurance, attacks by man-eating animals, puzzles and deadly contests. According to that recap, applicants face severe risks and only a small fraction succeed.

VIZ’s official series page gives a sharper figure: “Less than one in one hundred thousand” can pass the qualification exam (VIZ Media, publication year not stated on the page). This is franchise context from the publisher, not a measured real-world pass rate, and it should not be read as a current annual statistic.

Why do the applicants enter?

VIZ’s recap gives each candidate a different reason for sitting the exam, and those reasons drive much of the early story.

Gon

Gon’s goal is to find his father. The exam is the route he takes toward that search, which is why his story stays tied to the qualification from the start.

Killua

Killua enters on a whim rather than out of a fixed goal, a contrast that sets him apart from the other applicants.

Leorio

Leorio needs money for medical school, so for him the exam is a practical path to funding.

Kurapika

Kurapika pursues justice connected to the Kurta Clan, which gives his entry a personal, backward-looking stake that differs from the others.

Does Gon learn Nen during the Hunter Exam?

On VIZ’s summaries, no. The exam stages in the recap are presented as trials of body and mind, and the publisher ties Nen to a later setting. VIZ’s Heaven’s Arena Arc page says Gon and Killua need to learn Nen to advance at the arena and that Wing teaches them there. The recap’s list of exam stages does not include Nen instruction, so the exam itself should not be read as the place where Gon picks it up.

What is Nen in the series?

VIZ defines Nen as control of the life energy, or “aura,” that suffuses living things. The Heaven’s Arena Arc page places Wing as the teacher of Gon and Killua at Heaven’s Arena. The same official feature frames the setting this way, as VIZ editorial copy rather than a character’s words:

“Heavens Arena is a tower combat arena, where the victors ascend floors while the losers stay down below.”

VIZ’s official pages cited here do not break Nen into techniques, energy types or categories. This guide stays with the definition and the training context those pages give, and does not add detail the series is not shown to provide in these summaries.

Do you need Nen to become a Hunter?

VIZ’s summaries answer this with a distinction rather than a simple yes or no. Passing the exam gets Gon certified; full recognition as a true Hunter depends on Nen. Three VIZ pages state this in different wording:

VIZ source What it says about Nen and recognition
“Welcome to Hunter x Hunter!” recap (January 24, 2018) Gon is a certified Hunter after the exam, but cannot be officially recognized as a true Hunter until he learns and masters Nen.
Heaven’s Arena Arc page Repeats that recognition depends on learning and mastering Nen, and says Wing teaches Gon and Killua.
Hunter x Hunter, Vol. 7 product page Gon studies Nen with Wing, and completing the Nen teachings also passes the final and secret test of the Hunter Exam.

The apparent difference is one of sequence. The recap puts certification first, and the Nen requirement is the step that makes recognition official. VIZ’s volume 7 wording is the most direct, calling the Nen lessons the secret final test. Read together, the summaries treat Nen as a concealed requirement that follows the visible exam rather than part of it. The pages do not explain how the labels “certified” and “recognized” are defined within the story, so that distinction should be read as VIZ’s framing.

What happens after the Hunter Exam?

Using VIZ’s summaries as the order of events:

  1. Applicants go through the visible exam stages: endurance trials, dangerous animals, puzzles and contests.
  2. Gon is certified after the exam, according to the 2018 recap.
  3. Gon and Killua train under Wing at Heaven’s Arena, where VIZ says they must learn Nen to advance.
  4. Gon completes the Nen teachings, which VIZ says also passes the final, secret test of the Hunter Exam.
  5. Only after mastering Nen is Gon officially recognized as a true Hunter, per the recap’s wording.
