Hundreds of University of Edinburgh staff rallied outside the Scottish Parliament at Holyrood on 1 October 2026, according to The Morning Star. The protest took place during a five-week staff strike over the university’s proposed cuts plan, which the union says could put programmes and jobs at risk.
What happened at Holyrood
The rally was held outside the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh on 1 October, the fourth day of the strike, The Morning Star reported. Its caption said UCU members and student supporters from universities across Scotland took part. The report described attendance as hundreds; a separately verified crowd count is not available.
The action was part of a dispute between the University of Edinburgh and the University and College Union (UCU) over proposed savings, potential compulsory redundancies and programme closures. The Morning Star described the gathering as a protest against cuts and redundancies, while UCU framed the dispute around the university’s cuts plan.
What the union says is at stake
UCU Edinburgh said on 28 September that the university had announced a plan for £140 million in cuts, that 90 programmes faced closure, and that up to 1,800 jobs could be lost. The union’s job figure is an estimate, not a confirmed count of redundancies. These figures describe a plan and possible outcomes, not cuts, closures or job losses already completed.

Which programmes are named
A Scottish Parliament motion lodged by Kate Nevens on 24 September identifies the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences as the area affected by proposed programme closures. It gives postgraduate diplomas in inclusive education for deaf learners and visually impaired learners as examples.

The motion is available on the Scottish Parliament website.

The available accounts document the union’s estimates and concerns, the event reporting, and a parliamentary motion raising objections to proposed closures. They do not include the university’s own explanation for the £140 million plan. As a result, the union’s figures should be read as its estimates and claims rather than as an independently compiled account of the university’s finances or the final effects on staff and students.
