Humblewood Species and D&D 5e Species: What Changes at the Table?

Humblewood adds ten setting-specific species to D&D 5e: five birdfolk and five humblefolk. Their differences are visible in play, not just in appearance: every birdfolk has Glide, each species has its own trait package and subspecies options, and the published rules use fixed ability-score increases in their overview. Because Humblewood is third-party content, your Dungeon Master must approve it. If the campaign uses the 2024 rules, use Hit Point Press’s free 5e+ (2024) player-character update rather than assuming the older text converts automatically.

What Humblewood changes compared with regular D&D 5e species

Humblewood is a third-party campaign setting from Hit Point Press, built around a woodland society of birdfolk and humblefolk. It is not part of the core D&D setting books, so its character options are available only when the DM allows the source. D&D Beyond’s player-options overview calls the choices “species” in contemporary usage while noting that the Humblewood book uses “races.” Both terms refer to the same character options here.

The practical change is that species selection carries more setting identity than a generic cosmetic choice. A Corvum is a raven-like person whose traits point toward intelligence and talons; a Mapach is a raccoon-like scavenger who can improvise inexpensive adventuring gear. The setting also divides characters into canopy-dwelling birdfolk and ground-dwelling humblefolk, giving the party an immediate social and environmental context.

Humblewood’s summarized player rules use fixed ability-score improvements and then differentiate species with movement, senses, attacks, spell-like features, proficiencies, social support and survival tools. The summaries below explain what a choice is intended to do; consult the licensed rule text for exact ranges, timing, action types and wording.

Birdfolk All share Glide, which slows a fall and permits short-distance flight. Each birdfolk species adds its own physical, sensory or magical identity.
Corvum Raven-like; intelligence emphasis and talons. Dusk emphasizes Dexterity; kindled emphasizes Charisma.
Gallus Wildfowl-like; wing-assisted propulsion and social proficiencies. Bright leans toward social aptitude; huden toward nature and plant interaction.
Luma Dove-like; a cantrip and fate-manipulation features. Sable stresses defense; sera stresses performance.
Raptor Bird of prey; talons, keen senses and interaction with cover. Maran leans toward readied actions and Intelligence; mistral toward aerial combat.
Strig Owl-like; Strength emphasis, talons and darkvision. Stout favors resilience and grappling; swift favors Dexterity and speed.
Cervan Deer-like; Constitution emphasis and recovery after major damage. Grove leans toward Dexterity; pronghorn toward Strength and antler attacks.
Hedge Hedgehog-like; burrowing, quills and nature magic, including limited bug communication. No separate subspecies emphasis is given in the overview.
Jerbeen Mouse-like; Dexterity and Charisma, leaping, fear resistance and a bonus-action Help option. No separate subspecies emphasis is given in the overview.
Mapach Raccoon-like; tinker’s tools and temporary gear made from nearby materials. No separate subspecies emphasis is given in the overview.
Vulpin Fox-like; a bite, Intelligence added to Dexterity saves and charm-related magic. No separate subspecies emphasis is given in the overview.

Can you play as a bird in Humblewood?

Yes. Corvum, Gallus, Luma, Raptor and Strig are playable birdfolk. Their common feature is Glide. In the D&D Beyond summary, Glide slows a fall and allows short-distance flight, so it changes how you approach drops, gaps and vertical terrain without making a birdfolk character an unrestricted flying creature in every situation.

That distinction matters to encounter design. A character using Glide may avoid or reduce the danger of a fall and cross a limited distance through the air, but the exact trigger, distance, action cost and restrictions come from the Humblewood rules. Ask the DM how the feature is being interpreted before planning a character around cliffs, rooftops or aerial scouting. The species-specific features then determine whether the birdfolk is primarily a social helper, a perceptive hunter, a magical support character or a close-range striker.

Birdfolk choices and their play patterns

Corvum

Corvum have a raven-like identity, an Intelligence emphasis and talons. That combination supports characters who investigate, know things or solve problems while retaining a natural close-combat option. The dusk subspecies points toward Dexterity, making a nimble scout or finesse-oriented character a natural concept. Kindled points toward Charisma, which fits a persuasive, commanding or performative Corvum. The ability-score direction is a guide to synergy, not a restriction; the DM and the rest of the character build determine whether the talons or mental emphasis matter most.

Gallus

Gallus resemble wildfowl and combine wing-assisted propulsion with social proficiencies. Their most obvious contribution is often outside the damage calculation: speaking for the group, supporting negotiations and using mobility to reposition. Bright emphasizes social aptitude, while huden emphasizes nature and plant interaction. A Bright Gallus can anchor a diplomatic party; a huden Gallus fits a ranger-like guide, herbalist or woodland caretaker.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Luma

Luma are dove-like and bring a cantrip plus features that manipulate fate. This gives them a magical or support-oriented identity even when their class is not a full spellcaster. Sable emphasizes defense, while sera emphasizes performance. Decide whether you want the Luma to protect allies and endure pressure or to use presence, artistry and luck-shaped effects as the center of its concept.

Raptor

Raptors are birds of prey with talons, keen senses and features that interact with cover. They reward players who think about sight lines, concealment and where an enemy can or cannot reach. Maran leans toward readied actions and Intelligence, favoring a deliberate, prepared approach. Mistral leans toward aerial combat, making the shared Glide feature more central to the character’s tactics. Neither option is established as universally stronger; their value depends on how often the campaign uses cover, vertical space and preparation.

Strig

Strig are owl-like, with a Strength emphasis, talons and darkvision. They can suit a physically forceful character who operates in dim environments and wants a reliable natural attack. Stout emphasizes resilience and grappling, while swift emphasizes Dexterity and speed. Choose stout when holding a line or controlling an enemy is the fantasy; choose swift when repositioning and acting quickly matter more.

Humblefolk choices and their play patterns

Cervan

Cervan are deer-like and emphasize Constitution. Their defining overview feature is recovery after taking major damage, which gives them a survival-focused identity. Grove leans toward Dexterity and suits a mobile woodland character. Pronghorn leans toward Strength and antler attacks, supporting a more direct physical style. Consider how often your campaign includes attrition, difficult travel and repeated fights before deciding how valuable recovery will be.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Hedge

Hedge are hedgehog-like, combining burrowing, quills and nature magic. They can communicate in a limited way with bugs, which is especially useful for scouting, gathering environmental clues and portraying a character embedded in the small-scale life of the forest. Their abilities invite creative problem solving: tunnels, defensive contact and minor nature effects may matter more in an exploration-heavy adventure than in a sequence of arena battles.

Jerbeen

Jerbeen are mouse-like and emphasize Dexterity and Charisma. They can leap, move through other creatures’ spaces, resist fear and use Help as a bonus action. Together, those traits make them excellent mobile assistants: a Jerbeen can reach an ally, contribute support and escape a crowded position without relying solely on a large weapon or spell. The bonus-action Help feature also means you should check what your class already does with that action before finalizing the build.

Mapach

Mapach are raccoon-like and use tinker’s tools to turn nearby materials into crude, temporary and inexpensive adventuring gear. This is an improvisation feature rather than a promise of permanent equipment or unlimited crafting. Its usefulness depends on what materials the DM makes available and on how strictly the table handles time, quality and durability. In a game that rewards scavenging and preparation, a Mapach can solve mundane problems that another species would need equipment or a spell to address.

Vulpin

Vulpin are fox-like, with a bite attack, Intelligence added to Dexterity saving throws and charm-related magic. The saving-throw interaction rewards a character who expects traps, area effects or other Dexterity saves while also valuing Intelligence. Charm effects support social encounters and manipulation, but their success depends on creature type, immunity and the DM’s adjudication of the specific spell or feature.

How the rules differ from many core 5e species

Shared group feature versus a unique package

Core species often stand alone mechanically. Humblewood adds a layer of group identity: all five birdfolk receive Glide, while the five humblefolk do not share that birdfolk feature in the overview. You therefore evaluate a birdfolk twice—first for the value of Glide in the campaign’s terrain, then for the species and subspecies package that completes it.

Fixed ability-score improvements

The summarized Humblewood options assign fixed ability-score improvements rather than leaving every increase entirely open. That can make the intended archetype clear, but it also means the species choice may pull against a class you want to play. Treat the published increases as part of the setting’s original design and ask whether the DM is using the book’s text unchanged or applying a 2024-style character-building approach through the official update.

More than combat statistics

Several options are defined by exploration and social play: Gallus social proficiencies, Raptor interaction with cover, Hedge communication with bugs, Mapach improvisation and Jerbeen’s support action. A species that appears modest on a damage chart may be decisive in a campaign with negotiations, travel, climbing, scouting or scarce equipment. Conversely, a feature may see little use in a dungeon that offers no materials, plants, vertical terrain or social scenes.

  1. Which rules version is the table using? Establish whether the DM is running the 2014 rules, the 2024 rules or a mixed game, and whether the Humblewood update is required.
  2. What environments will recur? Canopy paths, ravines and rooftops make Glide relevant; underground corridors may make darkvision, burrowing or resilience more valuable.
  3. What does the party lack? A social Gallus, support-oriented Luma, perceptive Raptor, durable Cervan or improvisational Mapach can fill different noncombat gaps.
  4. What tone fits the setting? Humblewood’s animal societies are part of the fiction. Choose a species whose culture, appearance and abilities give you role-playing hooks rather than treating the option as a collection of bonuses.

Do not select a species solely because a feature sounds powerful in isolation. The available action economy, terrain, enemy design and campaign pacing determine how often an ability actually matters. The published summaries do not establish a complete quantitative balance ranking, so no species should be presented as objectively strongest.

Character-creation procedure

  1. Get approval first. D&D Beyond explicitly identifies Humblewood as third-party content and says the DM has final say over what is available.
  2. Confirm the edition. Ask whether the game uses the original Humblewood player rules or the 5e+ (2024) update listed by Hit Point Press.
  3. Choose the broad identity. Decide whether you want birdfolk mobility and Glide or a humblefolk concept built around ground-level survival, support or improvisation.
  4. Pick a species and subspecies. Use the table to identify the feature package, then read the licensed entry for prerequisites, limits and exact wording.
  5. Apply ability scores and class features together. Check the fixed improvements against your class, background and any house rules before locking the character sheet.
  6. Write two noncombat uses. For example, a Mapach might prepare gear from camp debris, while a Hedge might gather information through insects. This prevents the character from becoming a bonus-only build.
  7. Test action economy. Note whether a feature uses an action, bonus action, reaction or no action, especially for Jerbeen’s Help option, Raptor preparation features and Luma magic.

Are Humblewood species compatible with the 2024 rules?

There is a 5e+ (2024) player-character update PDF listed with the Humblewood campaign book. That establishes that Hit Point Press provides an update, but the available product description does not spell out every conversion change. Do not assume that every species, subspecies or feature has been automatically rewritten, or that the older text can be used without checking.

Before building a 2024 character, ask the DM which document is authoritative, obtain the update from the publisher’s current product listing, and compare the exact species entry with the class and background rules in use. If the table permits older options alongside 2024 material, agree in advance on ability-score handling, terminology, proficiency wording and any feature whose action economy differs. Record the decision on the character sheet so that the same interpretation is used during play.

What the campaign book contains

Hit Point Press describes the Humblewood Campaign Setting book as more than 200 pages. The product description includes a level 1–5 adventure, ten playable races, backgrounds, feats, spells, printable maps, standees and reference cards. The publisher lists a digital PDF, and a separate D&D Beyond digital edition provides character-builder access and related digital tools. Availability and format can change, so verify the current listing before purchasing or planning a digital workflow.

The species rules are therefore part of a broader campaign framework rather than an isolated supplement. A DM can use the setting’s adventure and maps to make Glide, burrowing, cover, social proficiencies and improvised gear appear naturally, or can allow the species in an unrelated home campaign after deciding how much of the setting’s cultural context to retain.

Common table problems and fixes

  • “Can Glide be used as permanent flight?” No assumption should be made from the name alone. Read the feature’s exact limits and agree how falling, distance, actions and terrain apply.
  • “The fixed ability scores do not suit my class.” Ask whether the DM is using the original Humblewood assignments, a house rule or the 2024 update. Do not silently replace them during play.
  • “A Mapach can build anything from scraps.” The overview describes crude, temporary, inexpensive gear. Define available materials, time and durability with the DM before attempting a complex item.
  • “A charm feature always works.” Charm-related magic still depends on the specific effect, saving throw, immunity and target. Apply the licensed text rather than treating the theme as automatic control.
  • “The species is unavailable in this campaign.” Because the content is third-party, the DM may decline it or limit particular options. Ask whether a reskinned core species can preserve the character concept without importing the mechanics.

What changes at the table?

Humblewood changes more than a character’s appearance. Birdfolk add a common movement tool that interacts with vertical terrain; humblefolk supply specialized exploration, support and survival hooks; fixed ability improvements make the original design intent visible; and subspecies let two characters from the same species play differently. The result is a set of options that feels tied to a woodland society instead of a neutral list of bonuses.

For players, the best choice is the species whose feature package matches the campaign’s terrain, action economy and tone. For DMs, the key preparation is deciding whether third-party content is allowed, clarifying Glide and improvised-equipment adjudication, and selecting the correct 2014 or 2024 text before characters are finalized.
