Amplitude Studios has shown the first extended in-game look at HUMANKIND 2, following one civilization from its first settlement through the opening era transitions. The October 15, 2026 video demonstrates a more structured way to shape a civilization: starting myths influence where and how a campaign begins, cultures develop through Customs before a player commits to a Legacy Trait, and climate and geography restrict which historical paths are available.
The sequel is planned for release on Windows PC in 2027. The official material does not give a launch date, performance results or a final feature list, so this is an early gameplay overview rather than a review.

What the first gameplay footage shows
A starting location comes with a founding story
Historical Mode begins with a place on an Earth map and a First Tale, a founding myth that identifies the emerging empire, shapes the opening situation and grants access to at least one culture. The example shown in the video is Flood Tamer, set in the Nile desert and associated with the Ancient Egyptians.

Culture is developed, not swapped instantly
HUMANKIND 2 contains 70 cultures (Amplitude Studios, 2026). Each culture has a Customs progression tree. Players can unlock bonuses, units and districts as they develop those Customs, then finish the progression by choosing a Legacy Trait.
This creates an intermediate stage between “keep the current culture” and “become a new one.” A civilization can accumulate benefits from its current identity before deciding whether a later era warrants a cultural transition.
Historical Mode limits which cultures are available
At an era boundary, players cannot freely select any culture from the full roster. A candidate must meet at least one of the game’s historical or geographic connections:

- Common History: the candidate shares a documented historical link with the current culture.
- Shared Land: the candidate historically occupied territory the player controls.
- Foreign Contact: the player has established close contact with that people.
Neighboring peoples can also contribute individual Customs without replacing the civilization’s entire culture. That distinction lets a campaign absorb outside practices while preserving a broader cultural continuity.
A culture can last across more than one era
The shown Ancient Egyptian example spans two eras. The player can therefore continue with the Egyptians instead of changing identity at the first available transition. Later options remain linked through Common History, so continuity and change are both deliberate choices rather than mandatory era-by-era swaps.
How geography and climate reshape the campaign
Eight biomes provide adaptation choices
The game has eight biomes (Amplitude Studios, 2026). Settling in a biome unlocks Adaptations that improve survival and movement in environments such as deserts and polar regions.

One example in the footage shows knowledge of dog sleds learned from the Thule people. The point is not simply a terrain bonus: contact with another population can provide a practical adaptation that makes a difficult environment more manageable.
Climate shifts can change resources and economies
Climate change is presented as an active strategic pressure. As biomes shift, resources that supported a city or economy may no longer remain available. The Steam description says players must adapt cities and economies to changing biomes while weighing immediate growth against consequences that can last for generations.
That means a strong short-term settlement is not automatically a secure long-term one. Resource planning has to account for the possibility that the surrounding environment will change, potentially forcing new infrastructure, trade priorities or settlement decisions.

What appears different in the sequel’s design
The footage does not establish every difference from the first HUMANKIND, and it cannot yet prove balance, performance or multiplayer quality. It does, however, identify the sequel’s clearest design emphases:

Historical grounding and scope of the preview
Amplitude says the people, places and events are grounded in historical research and that it worked with more than 30 historians (Amplitude Studios, 2026). Game director Benoit is identified as a historian. Those are developer-authored authenticity claims; the video itself is still an early overview, not independent verification of historical accuracy across the full game.

The reveal was announced for October 15 at 15:00 CEST, 9:00 a.m. EDT and 6:00 a.m. PDT. The extended footage now provides the first substantial view of an actual campaign, but many details remain unconfirmed, including final balance, system requirements beyond the listed PC platform information, and how the systems behave in late eras.

Release date and ways to play early
Planned PC launch
The official Steam listing names AMPLITUDE Studios as both developer and publisher, lists Windows PC, and gives a planned 2027 release. It supports single-player and multiplayer modes. No exact day or month has been announced.
Insiders Program access
Amplitude’s Insiders Program offers selected applicants a chance to play before release and send feedback. The October 10 announcement said applications submitted before October 20 would be considered for the first wave. Applying does not guarantee access, and the program is presented as a testing and feedback opportunity rather than a general early-release purchase.
What to expect next
For now, the most reliable picture is a historically constrained 4X sequel in which identity, terrain and climate interact. The first video demonstrates how a campaign can begin with a specific founding tale, develop through Customs, borrow adaptations from neighboring peoples and either preserve or change its culture when historical connections make that transition plausible. Until later footage or a final release supplies more evidence, claims about performance, balance, completeness and multiplayer should be treated as open questions.
