A private model or dataset limits who can discover, open, or clone it, while a token determines what an authenticated identity may do. Use one narrow credential per application, prefer fine-grained tokens for production, and revoke an exposed token immediately. If the token belongs to another user, Hugging Face documents a revocation endpoint that invalidates the matching credential globally.
How token permissions and repository privacy fit together
Think of every Hub request as passing two checks. First, the repository or Space has a visibility setting. Second, the authenticated account or token must have enough permission for the requested action. Making a repository private does not narrow a token that is already allowed to access it, and a narrowly scoped token cannot make a public repository private.

Hugging Face recommends a separate access token for each application or use: for example, one for a developer laptop, another for a notebook, and a third for an inference server. If one credential appears in a log or public commit, you can invalidate that credential without breaking unrelated workflows. For production systems, the platform recommends fine-grained tokens to reduce the damage a leak can cause.

Which Hugging Face token should you create?
| Token type | What it generally permits | When it fits | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Read | Reads repositories that your user account or organization membership allows you to read, including private repositories. | Downloading models or datasets, pulling configuration, and other read-only automation. | If exposed, the credential can reveal every resource that account is permitted to read. |
| Write | Read access plus write actions wherever your account has write permission. | Publishing, editing, deleting, renaming, or pushing content in repositories where you are authorized. | A leak can permit destructive or unauthorized changes, not just downloads. |
| Fine-grained | Limits the token to selected resources and permissions instead of the account’s full eligible scope. | Production jobs, a single repository, or access to one gated model. | It still has to be configured correctly; a broad resource selection defeats the point. |
The token’s role is only one part of the decision. Organization membership, repository permissions, approval policies, and resource-group rules can further restrict what the credential can do. A write token does not grant write access to a repository where the underlying user or service account has none.

Fine-grained access for a single gated model
If a job only needs to download one gated model, create a fine-grained token limited to that model rather than granting access to all private models available to your account. Apply the same principle to datasets, Spaces, and organization repositories: select the smallest resource set and the least powerful operation that completes the task.
Separate credentials by workload
- Use different tokens for local development, notebooks, CI, and production services.
- Do not copy a production token into a sample notebook or commit it to a repository.
- Store tokens in the workload’s secret manager or environment mechanism, not in source files.
- Record the owner, purpose, and rotation contact for each credential so a replacement can be issued quickly.
Can other people see a private Hugging Face repository?
For models and datasets, private visibility means other users cannot discover or access the repository through the normal public interface. Hugging Face documents three observable behaviors: a private repository is omitted from other users’ search results, visiting its URL as an unauthorized user returns 404 - Repo not found, and that user cannot clone it.
Spaces have public, protected, and private settings. The documentation identifies protected visibility as available on PRO and Team & Enterprise plans. Because plan entitlements and labels can change, check the visibility choices shown for your organization or account before designing an access workflow.

| Visibility | What an unauthorized visitor should expect | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Public | The repository can be discovered and viewed according to the Hub’s public behavior. | Visibility does not imply that every action, such as pushing, is allowed. |
| Protected Space | A separate Space visibility mode documented for PRO and Team & Enterprise plans. | Availability and access behavior are plan-dependent; confirm the current plan documentation. |
| Private | Other users do not see it in search, receive a 404 at its URL, and cannot clone it. | Private status is a visibility and access control, not a substitute for revoking a leaked credential. |
Private visibility should therefore be treated as one layer. If a token has been committed to code, assume the credential itself is compromised and revoke it; changing a repository from public to private does not invalidate the token.

How organization roles change access
For a repository owned by an organization, the member’s role and any resource-group assignment determine the effective access. The documented roles are:
| Role | Practical meaning |
|---|---|
read |
Read-only access. |
contributor |
Write rights to repositories that the member created. |
write |
Applies to all organization repositories and permits actions such as creating, deleting, renaming, editing, and pushing content. |
admin |
Write-level repository powers plus organization-profile and member-management powers. |
no_access |
No general access; can be combined with resource groups to grant access only to selected resources. |
A token cannot bypass these membership rules. Conversely, removing a member from an organization is not the same operation as globally invalidating that person’s token: the token may remain usable for resources outside the organization unless it is revoked at the global credential level.
What to do when a Hugging Face token leaks
Speed matters more than proving exactly how the token was used. Treat a token in a public repository, build log, issue, paste, or chat export as exposed.
- Identify ownership. Determine whether the token is yours, belongs to another user, or is issued to an organization service account. This decides which control you can use.
- Revoke at the correct boundary. Use the global user-token action for a credential that must stop working everywhere. An Enterprise organization administrator can instead revoke a member token’s access to that organization only.
- Replace legitimate credentials. The token owner or an approved administrator should create a new, narrower token and update the application or secret store.
- Remove the exposed copy. Delete the secret from the public location where feasible, correct the commit or log retention policy, and check generated artifacts and deployment logs.
- Review activity. Examine organization audit events and recent repository changes for unexpected visibility changes, pushes, deletions, membership changes, or token actions.
If the token is yours
Open your Hugging Face Access Tokens settings and delete or refresh the exposed token. A refresh or replacement must also be installed in every legitimate application that used the old value. Do not leave the old credential active while you test the new one.

If you found somebody else’s token
Hugging Face documents POST /api/credentials/revoke for immediate invalidation. The request can contain several token values. A matching token is invalidated immediately and stops working everywhere; its owner receives an email and must create a new token to restore access.
Pass values through environment variables or a protected file rather than placing raw credentials directly in a shell command that could be saved in history or build logs. For example, a script can read a value from an environment variable and send it in the request body without printing the value:
export LEAKED_HF_TOKEN='read-from-your-secret-store'
curl -X POST https://huggingface.co/api/credentials/revoke
-H 'Content-Type: application/json'
-d "{"token":"$LEAKED_HF_TOKEN"}"
The endpoint always returns 202 Accepted, whether or not a submitted token existed. That status confirms that the revocation request was accepted; it does not prove that the token was valid. Submitting the same value again is documented as harmless.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf an organization token is involved
An Enterprise administrator’s organization-level revocation cuts the member token’s access to that organization, but the token can continue working on resources elsewhere. Use the global credentials endpoint when the requirement is to invalidate the leaked token everywhere. Organization-level Enterprise revocation is permanent for that organization, whereas denial during a token-approval process can later be reversed.

Organization approval, denial, and service accounts
Team and Enterprise organizations can require fine-grained tokens or administrator approval for eligible tokens. A pending token cannot access that organization’s resources until it is approved. Denial is part of that approval workflow and is distinct from revocation: denial can be reversed through the process, while Enterprise organization-level revocation permanently removes that token’s access to the organization.
For automation that should not depend on a particular employee, Enterprise service accounts provide an organization-owned identity. Their fine-grained tokens can be scoped at the organization level or to specific repositories. A service-account token is displayed only when it is created or rotated. Rotation immediately stops the previous token from working, so schedule the application update as part of the rotation procedure.
How Hugging Face detects secrets
Hugging Face says it runs TruffleHog on each push to look for hard-coded secrets. When a secret is verified to work, the platform emails users. Verification can fail for technical reasons, and a finding that is not verified is not evidence that the credential is safe or invalid. Investigate every token-looking value, then revoke it if exposure is plausible.
Hub-side scanning is a safety net, not permission to commit credentials. Add secret scanning to your own repositories and CI pipeline, block pushes containing credentials where practical, and prevent build logs from echoing environment variables.

Safer CI/CD with Trusted Publishers
Trusted Publishers lets a supported CI provider present an OIDC identity token and exchange it for a Hub token at workflow start. This avoids storing a long-lived Hugging Face token as a CI secret. The documentation describes setups for GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, CircleCI, and Bitbucket Pipelines, and illustrates the resulting Hub token as short-lived; its diagram shows a one-hour validity period. Provider configuration and token lifetime are product details that can change, so verify the current setup page before deploying.
Use a workflow identity that is limited to the repository, branch, environment, or organization resource it needs. Keep a separately scoped emergency credential under controlled storage for recovery, rather than reusing a broad personal write token in every pipeline.
Using audit logs after an incident
Organization audit logs can help establish what changed and when. Documented event categories include repository-visibility changes, two-factor-authentication enforcement, network settings, organization API-token rotation, and token approval, denial, and revocation.

Common mistakes and their fixes
- Assuming private means a leaked token is harmless: privacy controls who can find or access repository content; revoke the credential separately.
- Using one write token everywhere: create separate, least-privilege tokens so one rotation does not stop every workload.
- Testing validity from the revoke response:
202 Acceptedis returned whether or not the token existed. - Revoking only at the organization level: that blocks the organization but may leave the token usable elsewhere; use global revocation for a total invalidation.
- Ignoring an unverified scanner alert: verification failures can be technical. Treat the value as potentially active until the owner confirms and rotates it.
- Putting a raw token in a command line: use environment variables or protected files to reduce shell-history and log exposure.
- Expecting a member role to grant more than it does: effective access is the combination of token permission, organization membership, repository rights, and resource-group policy.
A practical prevention checklist
- Create one token per app or usage and label its owner and purpose.
- Choose read access for read-only jobs, write only where publishing or editing is required, and fine-grained scope for production.
- Limit a gated-model job to that model instead of every private model.
- Prefer organization service accounts for Enterprise automation that should survive employee changes.
- Use Trusted Publishers and OIDC for supported CI providers instead of storing a long-lived CI token.
- Enable approval requirements where the organization’s plan supports them.
- Rotate credentials on a schedule and immediately after any exposure.
- Review audit events and scanner alerts as part of normal operations, not only after an incident.
“Try not to leak your token! Though you can always rotate it, anyone will be able to read or write your private repos in the meantime which is 💩” — Hugging Face, User access tokens documentation.
