One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor production, reproducible evaluation, incident investigation, or any model that runs repository-supplied code, pin Hugging Face downloads to a reviewed full commit hash. A branch such as main is a moving reference: a later download can resolve it to a different repository state. Pinning makes the selected snapshot repeatable, but it does not prove that the snapshot is safe. You still need to inspect the author, files, custom code, serialization format, and available security signals.
What does a Hugging Face revision control?
Hugging Face download helpers accept a branch name, tag, or commit hash through a revision argument. If you omit revision, the helper follows the default-branch behavior documented for that library and repository. The value determines which repository state is used for configuration, tokenizer files, weights, and other artifacts.

A full commit hash identifies one immutable point in that repository’s history. A branch or tag is a reference that can be moved later. The distinction is easy to miss because both can produce a successful download today; the security and reproducibility consequences appear when the same code runs again after the reference changes.

A moving reference is reasonable for development or an intentionally rolling-update service, provided every change goes through testing and approval. The choice is an operational policy, not a claim that one revision type is universally safe.
| Use case | Preferred revision policy | Why | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Production deployment | Reviewed full commit hash | Repeatable selection of one repository state and easier rollback | The hash identifies content; it does not establish trustworthiness |
| Reproducible evaluation | Full commit hash recorded with the experiment | Later runs use the same model, tokenizer, and configuration state | Record the repository ID and library versions as well |
| Incident investigation | The exact hash used by the affected run | Preserves the evidence needed to reproduce behavior | A local cache may contain several snapshots, so identify the hash explicitly |
| Development | Branch or tag with an explicit update process | Convenient access to intended upstream changes | Each update is a dependency change that needs testing |
| Custom remote code | Reviewed commit hash, with code and author review | Prevents silently picking up later code after review | Pinning cannot make malicious code benign |
Why revision=main can change what your program runs
A branch is a moving reference
When a download resolves main, the Hub returns the commit currently pointed to by that branch. If the repository owner pushes a new commit, a later download of main can retrieve newer code, weights, or metadata without any change to your application source.
This is why “it worked yesterday” is not evidence that a future run will use the same model. The change could be an intended improvement, a breaking file change, a compromised account, or an unsafe line added to custom code. The revision mechanism cannot distinguish those cases.
What the cache records
The Hugging Face cache keeps downloaded snapshots and records reference mappings such as refs/main. When a later request resolves main to a newer commit, that reference mapping is updated while the earlier snapshot remains available if it was already downloaded. The cache therefore provides versioned availability, not a signature or safety verdict.
Cache behavior also explains why two machines can appear inconsistent: one may already have an older snapshot, while another resolves the branch after an upstream update. A cache hit should not be treated as proof that the branch is still at the same commit.
Separate calls can drift apart
Suppose a script downloads a configuration file, then a tokenizer, then weights in separate calls, each using main. If the branch moves between calls, those files can come from different commits. The result may be incompatible or, more seriously, may combine reviewed files with unreviewed code or weights.

Resolve the branch once, capture the resulting commit, and pass that same commit to every call for that repository. Resolve a separate commit for each different repository; a hash from one repository has no meaning in another.
How to pin a model to a reviewed commit
1. Inspect the repository before execution
- Confirm the repository ID and intended owner.
- Read the model card, licensing information, usage notes, and known limitations.
- List the files, looking for custom Python modules, unusual binaries, archives, and unexpected scripts.
- Check whether the repository uses a data-only format such as safetensors or relies on pickle-based files.
- Review the author and any available commit-signature or scanning information. These are signals to consider, not guarantees that every unsafe artifact has been detected.
Transformers’ custom-model guidance specifically recommends reviewing the code and author. Its versioned v4.45.1 documentation warns that a model author could add malicious lines after an earlier review and strongly encourages passing a commit hash unless the author is fully trusted.
2. Resolve the intended ref once
If your update policy starts from a branch or tag, resolve it once and record the returned commit SHA before downloading the rest of the files. The following Python pattern uses the Hub API; replace the environment variable with the repository you have approved:
import os
from huggingface_hub import HfApi
repo_id = os.environ["MODEL_REPO"]
info = HfApi().model_info(repo_id, revision="main")
print(info.sha)
Check that the displayed SHA is the one you intend to review. Do not silently accept a newly resolved SHA just because a build started.
3. Review the exact commit
Inspect the file list and the diff from the previously approved commit. Pay particular attention to Python files, loading hooks, tokenizers, configuration changes, and replacement weight files. Test the candidate in an isolated environment with the same Transformers, huggingface_hub, runtime, and hardware versions used in deployment.
When custom code is involved, understand what enabling it does. In Transformers this commonly means trust_remote_code=True; enabling it allows repository code to run, so the code review and commit pin are part of the security decision rather than optional metadata.

4. Pass the full hash to every download
Store the approved commit in configuration or an environment variable, then reuse it consistently:
import os
from huggingface_hub import snapshot_download, hf_hub_download
repo_id = os.environ["MODEL_REPO"]
commit = os.environ["APPROVED_COMMIT"]
local_dir = snapshot_download(repo_id=repo_id, revision=commit)
config_path = hf_hub_download(
repo_id=repo_id,
filename="config.json",
revision=commit,
)
For a Transformers load, pass the same value:
from transformers import AutoModel
model = AutoModel.from_pretrained(
repo_id,
revision=commit,
trust_remote_code=True,
)
The CLI provides the equivalent revision selection:
hf download "$MODEL_REPO" --revision "$APPROVED_COMMIT"
Use the full commit hash, not a shortened display prefix, in the release configuration. Record the repository ID, hash, model configuration, tokenizer configuration, loader versions, and the date the approval was made.

Treat a new hash like any other dependency update. A useful sequence is: open a change describing the old and new SHAs; inspect the diff; run security and compatibility checks; test inference and resource use; deploy to a controlled environment; then approve promotion. If a problem appears, restore the previous hash rather than moving a branch back and hoping every consumer resolves it simultaneously.
How to keep a model from updating automatically
- Set an explicit
revisionin every Hub download and model-loading call. - Use one approved commit variable for all files from that repository.
- Fail the build if the revision is missing, still equals a moving branch, or is not in the approved dependency manifest.
- Build or warm the cache from the pinned revision during release, then run production with that same revision.
- Store the resolved SHA in experiment metadata, deployment manifests, logs, and incident records.
- Update only through a reviewed change; never “refresh” a production cache by downloading
mainin place.
Pinning application code alone is insufficient if another component downloads the model independently. Check startup scripts, notebook cells, CI jobs, sidecars, and orchestration templates for hidden default-revision behavior.
When automatic updates are appropriate
Automatic updates can be useful when the purpose is to follow upstream development, evaluate new checkpoints continuously, or run a service whose update process is deliberately rolling. In those cases, make the movement explicit rather than treating it as an invisible default.

- Resolve the branch at a scheduled time and record the resulting SHA.
- Run compatibility, quality, security, and performance tests against that SHA.
- Publish the SHA that passed, not merely the branch name.
- Roll out gradually and retain the previous approved SHA for rollback.
- Alert when the branch resolves to a new commit or when expected files change.
This preserves update speed while keeping an audit trail. It also prevents a deployment from changing simply because a process happened to run later in the day.

Pinning does not answer “is this model safe?”
A hash answers which repository state did I select? It does not answer who created it, what the code does, or whether the artifacts are malicious? A hostile commit remains hostile after it is pinned. Review provenance and content before approval.
Remote custom code
Custom modeling code expands the attack surface beyond weights and configuration. The Transformers documentation’s warning is precise: “It is also strongly encouraged to pass a commit hash as a revision to make sure the author of the models did not update the code with some malicious new lines (unless you fully trust the authors of the models).” The recommendation is to combine the pin with code and author review, and to avoid remote code when a trusted built-in implementation is sufficient.
Hub security signals
Hugging Face documents malware, pickle, and secrets scanning, commit signatures, access tokens, and multi-factor authentication as Hub security features. Use those controls and the information they expose as additional evidence. Scanning should not be described as a guarantee that every malicious or unsafe artifact is found, and a signed commit establishes provenance of the signer rather than safety of the contents.
Serialization format
Text Generation Inference safety guidance warns about pickle-based model files and describes safetensors as a data-only alternative. Prefer safetensors when the repository and your loader support it, but verify what the deployed library and version actually load by default. A repository can contain more than one format, and a security improvement is lost if an application silently selects the less desirable one.
Credentials and access
Use appropriately scoped access tokens, keep them out of notebooks and logs, and enable MFA on accounts that publish or administer repositories. These controls reduce account and credential risk; they do not replace revision review.

Common failure modes and fixes
“The hash is pinned, so we can skip review.”
Why it fails: pinning gives repeatability, not trust. Fix: inspect the author, model card, file list, custom code, serialization format, and available signatures or scans before approval.
“Every file uses main, so they are consistent.”
Why it fails: the branch can move between calls. Fix: resolve once and reuse the returned commit for all files from that repository.
“The cache served the old model, so the branch has not changed.”
Why it fails: a local snapshot can hide that refs/main now maps to another commit elsewhere. Fix: log and verify the explicit SHA; do not infer version from a cache hit.
“A shortened SHA is good enough.”
Why it fails: shortened identifiers are less precise in manifests and audits. Fix: store and pass the full commit hash returned by the Hub.
“A signed or scanned upload is automatically safe.”
Why it fails: signatures identify signing provenance and scans provide detection signals; neither is a complete behavioral review. Fix: combine them with source inspection and isolated testing.
“The model updated even though the application code did not.”
Likely cause: a downloader omitted revision, used a branch, or resolved it in a separate process. Fix: search every download path, require an approved revision in configuration, and record the effective SHA at startup.
“The pinned files do not work together.”
Likely cause: different calls used different commits or repositories. Fix: use one resolved commit per repository and verify that tokenizer, configuration, and weights belong to the tested snapshot.

A practical review checklist
- Repository ID and owner verified.
- Model card, license, and limitations read.
- Exact full commit hash recorded.
- Diff from the prior approved hash reviewed.
- Custom code identified and reviewed, or remote code avoided.
- Tokenizer, configuration, weights, and auxiliary files all fetched from the same repository commit.
- Serialization format confirmed; safetensors used where supported.
- Hub scanning, signatures, author history, and provenance considered without treating them as guarantees.
- Loader and Hub-library versions captured.
- Isolated tests completed in the target runtime.
- Rollback hash retained and documented.
- Effective revision logged at startup and in experiment metadata.
Bottom-line decision
Use a reviewed full commit hash whenever reproducibility, auditability, or code-execution risk matters. Use a branch or tag only when moving updates are intentional and surrounded by a process that resolves, tests, records, and approves each new commit. Whether pinned or moving, inspect the repository and its artifacts: revision pinning controls which state runs, not whether that state deserves trust.
