That makes it unusual, but not automatically the right choice for routine blood pressure checks: if you only need readings, a dedicated upper-arm monitor is the simpler, lower-cost category to consider. The D3 is most compelling if you also want a wearable for activity, sleep and health tracking—and understand that its readings are for reference, not diagnosis or treatment.

How the Watch D3 takes a blood pressure reading
Unlike watches that estimate blood pressure trends from pulse patterns, the D3 uses a mechanical airbag built into the inside of its strap. A small pump inflates the bag; a pressure sensor detects pulse changes as it inflates and deflates, and the watch calculates systolic and diastolic readings using an oscillometric method. Expert Reviews says a spot reading takes around 40 seconds.
Huawei offers individual readings as well as a 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) plan, which schedules measurements across the day and night. The product page also lists readings before and after exercise. These features are intended to make measurement more convenient, but they do not turn the watch into a clinical diagnostic device. What the reviewer found—and what it does not prove
Jonathan Bray of Expert Reviews wore the D3 for about three weeks. For blood pressure, he compared it with an AND UA767S-W digital monitor, making six same-day comparisons. The review reports an average difference of 2.8 mmHg systolic and 1.8 mmHg diastolic. These are the reviewer’s observations from a small set of comparisons, not a clinical validation study or a general accuracy guarantee. Blood pressure can change quickly, and readings taken at different times or in different positions may not match exactly.
The same review found average GPS distance differences below 1% across the reviewer’s workouts, compared with a Stryd 3rd generation pod and Coros Apex 2 Pro, and an average heart-rate difference of 1.83% versus a Polar H10 chest strap. These, too, are reviewer-specific results rather than promises of performance for every wearer or workout. What else you get for the money
The D3 has a 1.92-inch AMOLED display with 408 × 480 resolution. Huawei specifies a 40 g watch body without the strap and a wrist range of 130–210 mm. It is compatible with Android 8.0 or later and iOS 13.0 or later. Alongside blood pressure, Huawei lists ECG, sleep tracking, heart-rate variability (HRV) and readiness features; availability may vary by region.
Huawei claims up to six days of typical battery life and up to one day with ABPM enabled. The six-day figure is a manufacturer claim under stated test conditions, including six blood pressure and five ECG readings daily; actual life depends on settings and use. In Expert Reviews’ use, the watch lasted around six days during the first two weeks with always-on display enabled, two to four hours of outdoor workouts and several blood pressure readings each day. Practical limitations to weigh
- Keep it out of the shower and pool. Expert Reviews advises against showering or swimming with the D3. Notebookcheck mentions an IP68 rating but likewise says not to use it for swimming or showering. Do not infer swim suitability from a rating; follow the product-specific wear instructions.
- Smartwatch features have compromises. Expert Reviews found NFC payments clunky, third-party app support limited, no native turn-by-turn map integration and limited options for replying to notifications. The review says Curve is used for UK NFC payments; check regional availability and current support before relying on it.
- It is a relatively specialized purchase. The inflatable strap and blood pressure functions distinguish the D3, but they do not remove the need to consider comfort, fit and the kind of monitoring you actually need.
Who should choose the D3, a regular smartwatch or a blood pressure monitor?
Choose the D3 if you want cuff-based readings in a wearable
The D3 suits someone who values the convenience of a strap-integrated airbag and wants smartwatch functions in the same device. Its scheduled ABPM option may be useful for observing readings over time, but discuss whether that kind of monitoring is appropriate with a healthcare professional.
Choose a dedicated upper-arm monitor if blood pressure is the main need
If you want occasional home readings and do not need watch, workout or sleep features, a dedicated digital upper-arm monitor is the more direct alternative and generally costs less than the D3. Expert Reviews used an AND UA767S-W for comparison, but a current price or availability for that model was not verified. A smartwatch is not required for routine blood pressure checks.

Choose a general smartwatch if blood pressure measurement is not essential
If your priority is notifications, exercise tracking, maps or broader app support, compare ordinary smartwatches around those needs rather than paying extra for the D3’s cuff. The D3’s distinctive feature is its physical measurement method; its other smartwatch capabilities have the limitations described above.
Safety: use readings as information, not a diagnosis
Huawei says the Watch D3 has not been validated for pregnant individuals, including people with preeclampsia. Anyone pregnant or managing a blood pressure condition should follow clinical advice about measurement and monitoring rather than rely on the watch.
