However, its lack of Google Mobile Services, uncertain update coverage, potentially worn battery and variable carrier compatibility make it a niche used-phone purchase—not a safe default recommendation. Buy one only at a low price, with a return window, after checking the exact model and the apps you depend on.
What the Huawei P40 Lite 5G actually is
The P40 Lite 5G is a standalone European midrange model launched in 2020, not simply a 5G-enabled version of the ordinary P40 Lite. It uses Huawei’s faster Kirin 820 5G platform, a larger display and a different camera system. In some markets it is closely related to the Huawei nova 7 SE. Launch specifications and pricing are documented by FoneArena and Huawei’s regional support pages.
Do not confuse it with the 4G-only P40 Lite (Kirin 810), the lower-spec P40 Lite E, or the flagship P40 and P40 Pro. The 5G model’s hardware is materially different.
Its original European launch prices were about €399.90–€399.99, while UK coverage reported £379. Those are 2020 launch prices, not what a used phone should cost in 2026. A recent European comparison listing showed refurbished 128GB units from roughly €99.99, but condition, warranty, seller and stock can change that figure substantially (Reepeat).

RAM, storage, colours, SIM design, 5G bands and warranty terms vary by country. Treat the table as a guide to the commonly reported European version, not a universal specification sheet (EE specifications; FoneArena).

These differences mean a listing labelled only “P40 Lite” is not necessarily the 5G phone. Verify the model number and network specification before paying.
Design and display
The large 6.5-inch Full HD+ LCD is practical for reading, video and web pages. Text and images remain sharp at 2,400 × 1,080, and the punch-hole camera keeps bezels reasonably compact. It is a conventional 60Hz-class panel rather than a high-refresh display.
LCD technology cannot match an OLED screen’s black levels, contrast or often lower power use. There is no premium high-refresh advantage here, but the screen is still one of the phone’s useful features. USB-C, a headphone socket and a side fingerprint reader add conveniences that some newer inexpensive phones omit.

Performance and 5G
The Kirin 820 was a strong midrange processor for its launch period, pairing four Cortex-A76-class performance cores with four Cortex-A55 efficiency cores and a Mali-G57 MP6 GPU. In practical terms it remains suitable for ordinary multitasking, social apps, video playback, navigation and many games at moderate settings. Contemporary specifications are listed by EE and FoneArena.
Performance is not the main 2026 risk. A five-year-old software platform, battery wear and app compatibility matter more than the phone’s nominal 5G label. 5G also does not guarantee service on every carrier: bands, VoLTE provisioning, certification and SIM-plan requirements differ by region.
Camera quality
The 64MP main camera is the meaningful part of the rear system and should deliver the best results, particularly in daylight. The 8MP ultrawide is useful for landscapes, architecture and groups but gives up detail. The 2MP macro and 2MP depth sensors are specialist supporting cameras, not four equally capable lenses; there is no telephoto camera.
A contemporary Digital Camera World review found the phone’s value and main-camera output appealing for its class. That assessment describes launch-era hardware and software, not guaranteed results from a worn 2026 handset. Low-light processing and app-camera integration can also lag current phones.

Battery and 40W charging
The 4,000mAh battery and 40W Huawei SuperCharge were major strengths at launch. Charging is through USB-C, and there is no wireless charging. In a used phone, however, battery condition matters more than the original capacity. Ask whether the battery has been replaced, watch for sudden shutdowns or heat, and confirm that fast charging works with the supplied or compatible Huawei adapter and cable.
During a return period, test sustained video, camera use, GPS and 5G. A battery can appear fine in standby yet drain rapidly under navigation, gaming or cellular loads.
The Google-services limitation
The P40 Lite 5G shipped without Google Mobile Services. Huawei’s product page explicitly documents that Google services are not integrated (Huawei). There is no native Google Play Store, and Google Play Services, Google Maps integration, Google Wallet and certified Play Integrity are not guaranteed.
- Google apps may be unavailable, browser-only or dependent on unsupported workarounds.
- Banking, authentication, enterprise and payment apps may fail device-integrity, location or sign-in checks.
- Push notifications can be unreliable when an app expects Google’s messaging infrastructure.
- Games using Google sign-in or Play Services may lose features.
- An unofficial workaround can break after an app, firmware or server-side security change.
Huawei’s own support example for LINE shows how Google-dependent chat restoration, Google billing, push notifications and Google Maps-based location can be unsupported on an HMS device (Huawei’s LINE guidance). That example illustrates a risk; it does not prove that every app behaves identically.

Installing apps without Google Play
- Open AppGallery, search for the app and install or update the official listing.
- If it is absent, use Petal Search to find an official web version or a reputable distribution source.
- Use browser versions for services such as Gmail or YouTube when their web features are sufficient.
- Use Phone Clone to transfer data and, where compatible, applications from another phone.
AppGallery, Petal Search and Phone Clone are Huawei’s documented alternatives (Huawei product information). Sideloading an APK is not equivalent to Play Store compatibility: verify the publisher, permissions, update path and package authenticity. Test notifications, login, location, payments and background operation before relying on an app. Treat packages that promise “guaranteed Google Play” as unofficial and experimental.
US and international network compatibility
The phone was primarily marketed in Europe and other international markets. An “unlocked” listing does not guarantee US operation. Before purchase, match the exact model number and supported LTE/5G bands to the carrier’s official checker, then confirm VoLTE, IMEI acceptance, device certification, Wi-Fi calling and emergency-calling behaviour. Older network shutdowns can also affect a phone that worked when new. Regional specifications are documented in EE’s guide and the regional manual.
Updates and support
Huawei still provides model-specific support material and lists the update path as Settings → System & updates → Software update. To update, back up important data, connect to Wi-Fi, choose Download and install, keep the phone charged and do not power it off or remove the memory card during installation (Huawei update instructions).
A support page and an available update mechanism do not establish current Android-version or monthly-security coverage. Check the installed security-patch date and the latest firmware for the exact regional model. Do not assume a 2020 handset receives the same support as a current phone.
Used and refurbished buying checklist
- Confirm the exact model number, region, firmware and supported bands.
- Check IMEI status, carrier acceptance and VoLTE before the return period ends.
- Ask for battery health, replacement history and evidence that 40W charging works.
- Inspect the screen for cracks, dead pixels, burn-in and touch problems.
- Test USB-C, fingerprint reader, microphone, speakers, vibration, GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and NFC.
- Test the selfie camera, 64MP main camera, ultrawide, macro and depth modes.
- Verify the SIM tray and Huawei NM-card reader; NM is not the same as microSD.
- Ensure the phone is factory-reset, removed from the previous Huawei account and free of modified firmware.
- Check that the charger and cable are genuine or correctly rated for SuperCharge.
- Buy only with a clear return window and refurbisher warranty.
Who should buy it?
It can make sense when
- The price is substantially below newer Google-certified phones.
- You mainly need calls, messaging, browsing, streaming, camera use and light productivity.
- You are comfortable with AppGallery, web apps and Huawei Mobile Services.
- Expandable storage, a headphone jack and fast wired charging are priorities.
- The battery is healthy and the network model is verified.
Choose something else when
- Google Play, Google Wallet, Android Auto or Google Maps navigation is essential.
- Your banking, authentication or business apps require Play Services or device integrity.
- You want long-term security updates, modern Android features or flagship camera processing.
- You are buying in the US without confirmed carrier compatibility.
- The phone’s total cost, including a battery or charger, approaches that of a newer supported Android device.
Final verdict
The Huawei P40 Lite 5G’s hardware still offers real value: a capable Kirin 820, large Full HD+ display, useful main camera, expandable storage and fast 40W charging. But 5G does not make a 2020 phone future-proof. Missing Google services, uncertain long-term updates, aging batteries and regional network risks dominate the buying decision in 2026. It is worth considering only as a cheap, returnable refurbished device for someone who has verified essential apps and accepts Huawei’s ecosystem. For most buyers—especially Google-dependent users—the safer choice is a newer Google-certified Android phone.
