Its compact size, 128 GB of storage and distinctive Leica-branded dual camera can still suit basic use, but in 2026 its outdated software, aging battery, 4G-only connectivity and uncertain app and carrier compatibility make it a poor default buy. Consider one only if it is very inexpensive, unlocked, in good condition and confirmed to work with the apps and network you need.
What the Huawei P20 is—and what it is not
Huawei introduced the P20 series in March 2018. The P20 was the smaller standard flagship, with a dual rear-camera system. The P20 Pro was a different, larger model with an OLED screen and triple cameras; the P20 Lite was a lower-cost phone with substantially different hardware. Listings that simply say “P20” should be checked against the model number.
The P20 launched with Android 8.1 and EMUI 8.1. Huawei’s launch announcement describes its Kirin 970 processor, Leica-branded dual cameras, 3,400 mAh battery and SuperCharge. A contemporaneous specification sheet gives additional hardware details; specifications and supported bands can vary by regional model.

Design and display
The 5.8-inch LCD makes the P20 relatively compact compared with many current phones, and its front fingerprint reader is a useful physical control. The display is LCD, not the OLED panel fitted to the P20 Pro. It charges over USB-C and lacks a built-in 3.5 mm headphone socket, so wired audio requires a compatible USB-C solution.

What its cameras can and cannot do
The rear system pairs a 12 MP color sensor with a 20 MP monochrome sensor. Huawei promoted Leica optics, Master AI and AI image stabilization; the monochrome camera also gives the phone a distinct black-and-white shooting option. These features made the P20 a still-photography-focused flagship at launch, but they do not make it equivalent to a current camera phone.
- The standard P20 does not have the P20 Pro’s dedicated 8 MP telephoto camera or its triple-camera arrangement.
- Do not read a “2× zoom” claim as equivalent to a modern dedicated optical telephoto lens; zoom results depend on the phone’s processing and the scene.
- Newer phones generally have more recent computational photography. The launch specifications alone cannot establish how the P20 compares in current hands-on photo or video tests.
For a used unit, check that both rear cameras focus and produce images, that the lenses are clean and undamaged, and that the front camera works. A faulty focus mechanism or scratched lens can matter more than the camera specifications.
Performance and battery in 2026
The Kirin 970 was a high-end processor when the P20 launched, and its NPU handled AI-related tasks. In a well-maintained handset, calls, messages, browsing, local media and light apps may remain practical. The 4 GB of RAM and old software base are limiting factors for modern multitasking, demanding games and apps that have moved on from older Android versions. Actual responsiveness also depends on battery condition, storage, heat exposure and the installed software.

The 3,400 mAh figure describes typical original capacity, not the capacity of a handset that has been used for years. Ask whether the battery was replaced and look for abrupt percentage drops, unexpected shutdowns, unusual heat, charging interruptions or a swollen case. Do not buy a visibly swollen phone. A replacement is worthwhile only if the handset and repair remain substantially cheaper than a supported alternative; ask for a credible repair record rather than relying on an unverified “new battery” claim.

The P20 shipped with Android 8.1 and EMUI 8.1. Huawei’s P20 user guide documents EMUI 9.0 for the EML-L09 and EML-L29 variants, evidence that Android 9/EMUI 9 existed for those models. It does not establish that every region, carrier or P20 variant received the same final update.
Huawei’s Japanese P20 support page lists a service end date of March 31, 2022. That date applies to the market covered by that page, not necessarily every country. Huawei continues to host a global support page, but a support page is not evidence of current security maintenance. Huawei’s security-bulletin index likewise does not establish that this particular legacy model receives current patches. Treat the P20 as an unsupported legacy phone unless Huawei confirms otherwise for the precise model and region; it is not a prudent choice for sensitive banking, work access, passwords or authentication.

The international P20 predates Huawei’s later international phones that launched without Google Mobile Services, so a properly sold global unit may have Google Play. Do not assume that every used P20 has it: Chinese-market devices, imported phones and devices with altered firmware can differ. On the specific handset, open Play Store and confirm Google Play Services is present, then check certification and test the apps you rely on. Google warns that modified or unsafe operating systems can create security and data-integrity risks in its Android safety guidance.
Check the installed software
- Open Settings → System → About phone and record the model number, Android version, EMUI version and build number. Huawei’s user guide identifies About phone as the place to view device and software information.
- For an update check, use Settings → System → Software update → Check for updates. Menu labels may vary by EMUI version.
- Before installing an offered update, back up important data, connect to Wi-Fi, charge the phone and leave enough free storage. Do not interrupt installation.
No update appearing may mean the device is already on the latest firmware available for its region or carrier; it does not show that the installed software is current by today’s security standards.

4G, 5G and U.S. carrier compatibility
The P20 is a 4G LTE phone, not a 5G device. A 5G SIM or plan cannot add 5G capability. U.S. buyers should not assume that an imported P20 will work for voice and data on a particular carrier: EML variants differ in LTE-band support, and VoLTE support, carrier policy and network approval matter as well.

- Get the exact model number, such as EML-L09 or EML-L29.
- Ask the intended carrier to confirm LTE-band and VoLTE compatibility for that model and IMEI.
- Check that the phone is unlocked and that its IMEI is not blocked or blacklisted.
- Confirm voice service, mobile data and messaging work on the intended carrier before the return window closes.
If mobile data fails, possible causes include unsupported bands, carrier restrictions, an APN configuration issue or lack of supported VoLTE. A generic claim that “it works in the U.S.” is not enough to establish compatibility.

Huawei’s series announcement distinguishes the standard model’s dual cameras from the Pro’s triple-camera system. Do not attribute the Pro’s 40 MP sensor or telephoto zoom to the P20.

- Request a photo of Settings → System → About phone showing model and software details. Confirm that the listing is for a P20, not a P20 Lite or P20 Pro.
- Get the IMEI through a trusted method and check it with the carrier or relevant service; confirm the device is not blacklisted and is unlocked.
- Test Google Play Store, Google Play Services and every essential app, including banking or work apps if you intend to use them.
- Test calls, mobile data, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC, speakers, microphones, both cameras, fingerprint reader, USB-C charging and screen touch response.
- Ask about battery replacement and inspect for swelling, overheating, rapid drain and charging interruptions. Test SuperCharge only with a compatible charger and cable.
- Ask whether the phone was rooted or flashed with unofficial firmware, and confirm the return period and warranty terms in writing.
Stop if the model number is withheld, the seller cannot establish unlock or IMEI status, the battery is swollen, essential apps fail, or there is no workable return option. A phone that will not fast-charge may have an incompatible charger or cable, a dirty or damaged USB-C port, or worn charging hardware.
Alternatives if you need a dependable daily phone
Certified-refurbished Google Pixel 8a
A Pixel 8a is a more defensible option if you prioritize a newer Android platform, Google services, app compatibility and computational photography. Google’s certified-refurbished device page and Pixel 8a refurbishment announcement provide program information. Google’s material lists $499 as the Pixel 8a’s original retail price, not a guaranteed current refurbished price; check live stock and pricing. It will not reproduce the P20’s particular monochrome-camera rendering or Huawei interface.
Newer Samsung Galaxy or iPhone
A named, currently supported Samsung Galaxy model may be a better fit when U.S. carrier compatibility, accessible repairs or Samsung software are priorities. A newer iPhone can suit someone who prefers iOS, compact options and its app ecosystem. Compare the exact model’s current support, price and condition rather than assuming every newer phone is a better value.
Huawei P30
An international P30 may appeal to someone who wants a later Huawei camera generation and the Google-era international Huawei ecosystem. It is also an aging phone, so it does not remove the long-term software-support concern; verify its precise model, firmware and network compatibility.
Verdict: should you buy a Huawei P20?
Buy only if the specific unit is very cheap, unlocked, tested, has acceptable battery condition, works on your carrier and passes the app checks that matter to you. It can still be an inexpensive compact phone for low-risk basic use or a photography hobbyist who understands its limits. Choose a newer supported phone for a primary device, sensitive accounts, 5G, demanding apps or predictable carrier service. Do not judge the deal by the original flagship specifications: compare the handset price plus likely battery, charger, shipping and repair costs with a supported refurbished alternative.
