Huawei Mate 50 Pro in 2026: Still Worth Buying?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Huawei Mate 50 Pro is still a compelling camera phone, but it is usually a poor choice as a primary phone in 2026—especially in the United States. Its variable-aperture camera, premium screen and fast charging remain attractive; the 4G-only modem, lack of official Google services, aging battery risk and uncertain carrier support are much harder to overlook. Consider it only if you have checked the exact regional model, can live without Google-dependent apps and find it at a substantial discount with a return option.

Who should buy the Huawei Mate 50 Pro?

Introduced in September 2022, the Mate 50 Pro is now primarily a used, refurbished or imported-phone purchase. International models use EMUI; China-market models use HarmonyOS. Their software, app availability, network bands and update paths can differ, so a listing that says only “Mate 50 Pro” leaves out important buying information.

  • Consider it: if still photography is your priority, you like Huawei’s camera approach, and you can use the phone without official Google services.
  • Consider it as a second phone: if you want its camera and hardware but do not need it for payments, work apps or everyday connectivity.
  • Usually avoid it: if you need 5G, Google Wallet, Android Auto, Google Play Games, dependable Google app integration, or straightforward US carrier and repair support.

For most people choosing a primary phone, a newer Pixel, Galaxy, iPhone or regionally supported Huawei model is the safer purchase. The Mate 50 Pro makes sense only when its camera and price compensate for its ecosystem and age-related compromises.

What you get: specifications and trade-offs

Huawei’s UAE international specification page lists the following configuration. Huawei notes that specifications may vary by market, finish and production unit, so confirm the details for the specific phone being sold.

Huawei’s UAE specifications provide the figures above; the product page lists the rear camera focal lengths as 13mm, 24mm and 90mm equivalents.

Camera: the strongest reason to choose it

Variable-aperture main camera

The 50MP main camera has optical image stabilization and a physical aperture adjustable from f/1.4 to f/4.0. A wider aperture can admit more light and create stronger background blur; a narrower setting can keep more of a scene in focus. That gives the camera useful flexibility for portraits, close-ups and low-light scenes, but it does not guarantee DSLR-like separation or make every moving subject easy to capture.

Zoom, motion and image consistency

The 64MP stabilized telephoto camera has a 90mm-equivalent focal length, while the 13MP ultra-wide camera covers a broader view. In DXOMARK’s test under its then-current protocol, the phone scored 149 for camera performance, with strengths in exposure, autofocus, texture and noise, low-light photography, zoom, bokeh and video. The same test noted shutter lag in difficult conditions, preview images that could differ from the final result, and some color issues against leading competitors. That historical score describes performance under a particular test, not a 2026 ranking against newer phones.

Shutter lag matters most when photographing children, pets or other moving subjects: the moment captured may not match the moment shown in the preview. If you often shoot action, do not buy on the basis of aperture range or a past score alone. Try the camera with the subjects and lighting you care about, and check both the preview and saved image.

DXOMARK’s camera test and device summary document those strengths and limitations. For independent context on the camera system, see Android Authority’s camera review.

Screen, handling and durability

The large curved OLED runs at up to 120Hz, and Huawei lists 1440Hz high-frequency PWM dimming and 300Hz touch sampling. The curved edges give the phone a premium look but can make accidental touches more likely and screen repairs more consequential. At roughly 205–209g, it is also a substantial device for one-handed use.

Huawei lists fingerprint recognition and 3D face recognition. The phone’s IP68 rating comes from controlled testing; Huawei’s product page describes different water-depth conditions for certain colors. That is not a guarantee for an older used handset. Impact, prior repair, worn seals or a cracked screen can compromise water resistance, so do not deliberately submerge a second-hand unit.

Everyday speed, battery and charging

Performance and 4G

The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 remains capable for everyday tasks and demanding games, but it is an older flagship chip in 2026. Expect less future-proofing and potentially weaker sustained performance than from newer processors; no current benchmark leadership should be assumed. Games that depend on Google Play Games or Google APIs may also be affected by the phone’s software ecosystem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The modem is 4G-only. That is more than a peak-speed trade-off: it reduces future network flexibility and can affect hotspot use and the likelihood of carrier certification. DXOMARK identifies the platform as the 4G Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 in its device information.

Battery life is separate from charging speed

Huawei specifies a 4,700mAh typical battery, up to 66W wired charging and up to 50W wireless charging. Those maximum rates require compatible Huawei charging equipment; generic wireless chargers should not be expected to deliver 50W.

In DXOMARK’s battery testing, the Mate 50 Pro took under 46 minutes to charge fully by cable and about 1 hour 30 minutes wirelessly. The lab reported roughly 37 hours 44 minutes of autonomy under its moderate-use scenario and about 4% overnight power loss, while judging overall autonomy poor to average. These results are specific to its test conditions, not a promise of personal runtime. Network strength, screen settings, camera use and background activity all matter.

More importantly for a 2026 purchase, a phone introduced in 2022 may have a significantly worn battery. Ask about battery condition and include possible replacement cost in the total price. DXOMARK’s results are detailed in its battery test.

Google services and app compatibility

The Mate 50 Pro does not come with official Google Mobile Services or the standard Google Play Store experience. Google’s support discussion says Google Play Store and Google Play Services are not currently available on Huawei phones in the standard manner. Huawei’s AppGallery is its official app-distribution platform, but availability and functionality vary by app and region; it is not a complete replacement for Google Play.

Before buying, check every essential app on the exact phone version. Pay particular attention to apps that rely on Google services for notifications, location, account backup, authentication or security checks.

  • Assume extra friction or incompatibility: Google Play Store and Play Services, Google Wallet, Android Auto, Play Games, some banking and enterprise apps, and apps using Google integrity checks.
  • Test directly: Gmail, Maps, YouTube, work tools, navigation, banking, streaming and any app needed for travel or authentication. A browser version or third-party alternative may be acceptable for one person and unusable for another.
  • Do not treat workarounds as official support: third-party compatibility layers can change or stop working after updates and may still fail payment or banking checks. A 2026 guide discusses microG installation on some setups but reports that Google Pay can still fail; this is not a guarantee of compatibility. See Phandroid’s guide.

Google-dependent payments and apps are not a minor inconvenience if they are part of your daily routine. Do not rely on an unofficial installation method for essential banking, payment or work functions.

China-market or international: verify the exact phone

International Mate 50 Pro units were sold with EMUI 13; Chinese units were sold with HarmonyOS. Those versions are not interchangeable labels for identical software. Firmware, languages, app availability, bands, update schedules and warranty coverage can vary, and a reseller’s claim that a China-market phone is “global” does not establish that it has international firmware or service support.

Do not assume that an international phone can be freely converted to Chinese firmware, or that a Chinese phone can be made identical to an international one. Update availability is also regional. Check the model number and software region code on the device, then consult Huawei’s support resources for that market. Huawei directs owners to its support and contact pages; the UAE specifications page listing EMUI 13 is not proof of the current update status of every unit.

US carrier compatibility: test before accepting the phone

Huawei’s regional specification lists multiple LTE bands, but the supported bands differ by variant. Matching a band on paper does not prove that a carrier will provision the phone’s VoLTE, Wi-Fi calling or other required features. Do not assume universal compatibility with any US network, or infer full service from seeing a signal icon.

Before the return period expires, verify the exact model with your carrier and test calls, SMS and mobile data using your own SIM. Ask specifically about VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling, and confirm the seller’s return terms if activation or calling fails. The 4G-only platform makes this compatibility check especially important.

Used-phone checklist

Inspect the device and test it while you still have return protection. An older flagship’s condition can matter more than its original specification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm whether it is China-market or international; record the exact model number, region code and storage capacity.
  2. Check that it is not locked to a carrier or still financed, and verify the IMEI status where applicable.
  3. Inspect the screen, frame and camera lenses for cracks, impact damage or signs of repair. Treat water resistance as unavailable if the repair history is unknown or the phone is damaged.
  4. Test all rear and front cameras, autofocus, optical stabilization, fingerprint and face recognition, speakers, microphones, USB-C and NFC.
  5. Check battery condition or insist on a return window. A low purchase price may not be low after a battery replacement.
  6. Test wired and wireless charging. Confirm whether the included charger and cable are genuine Huawei-compatible equipment if fast charging matters to you.
  7. Insert your SIM and test calls, SMS, mobile data and any carrier features you rely on.
  8. Install and sign into essential apps, then test payments, notifications, navigation and authentication before the return deadline.
  9. Check whether you need Huawei NM storage. The phone does not take standard microSD cards, and NM cards can be less convenient to source.
  10. Confirm the seller’s warranty, return period and the location where repairs are supported.

Price and alternatives

There is no dependable universal 2026 price: used and imported listings vary by country, condition, storage, seller protection and regional version. A marketplace comparison showed a price from about $491.46 in August 2026, but that is an indicative listing rather than an official Huawei price or a universal US street price. Check the current offer and calculate the total cost, including any needed charger, NM card, case or battery work; the listing can be viewed at Kimovil.

If its total cost approaches that of a newer mainstream flagship, the Mate 50 Pro is difficult to justify for most buyers. At a substantial discount, with a return window and confirmed app and network fit, it can still suit a photography-focused buyer.

Alternative Why it may be the better fit Why choose the Mate 50 Pro instead
Google Pixel Pro Google services, Android integration, computational photography and longer-term software support You prefer Huawei’s variable-aperture camera, image rendering or hardware
Samsung Galaxy S Ultra 5G, broader carrier support, Google services, accessory and repair availability; stylus support on applicable models You value Huawei’s camera character and charging hardware more than those advantages
iPhone Pro Video, app support, payments, resale value and US service coverage You prefer Huawei’s still-photo experience and do not need Apple’s ecosystem
Newer Huawei Pura or Mate Newer hardware, processor, battery and software generation for Huawei users The older model may cost less, if its regional software and network limitations are acceptable

These are use-case differences, not a claim that one current model is best in every market. Check regional availability, carrier support and services for whichever alternative you are considering.

Final recommendation

Buy the Mate 50 Pro only if you value its camera enough to accept a 4G-only phone without official Google services, have verified the exact model’s apps and carrier operation, and can get it well below the cost of a newer alternative with buyer protection. For a typical US buyer who needs a reliable primary phone, it is an avoid: the combination of app friction, uncertain network support and used-device condition outweighs its still-impressive camera hardware.
