HarmonyOS compatibility is not a single yes-or-no question. Your exact device model, market, installed apps and software version determine whether you can upgrade, whether an app can be reinstalled afterward and whether its required features work. Check all three before installing an upgrade.
What “compatibility” actually means on HarmonyOS
People asking “Will my apps work on HarmonyOS?” are usually asking three different questions:

- Can this exact phone or tablet install the target HarmonyOS release? Eligibility is tied to the model and rollout region.
- Can I obtain my existing apps after the upgrade? Huawei’s AppGallery upgrade-matching feature checks installed applications and identifies those that can be downloaded or installed after upgrading to HarmonyOS 5 or later.
- Will every function I depend on work? An app appearing as obtainable does not establish complete feature parity. A critical banking, workplace, government or hardware-control function still needs confirmation in the current AppGallery listing or from the app publisher.
Keeping these tests separate prevents two common mistakes: assuming that an eligible device makes every app compatible, or assuming that an unavailable app proves the operating-system upgrade itself is impossible.

Huawei’s “HarmonyOS Easy Upgrade” and upgrade-matching guidance is the most useful pre-upgrade check for a device you already own. It is designed to show which applications installed on that device may be downloaded or installed from AppGallery after an upgrade to HarmonyOS 5 or a later release.

Step-by-step check
- Record the exact device and region. Write down the commercial model shown in Settings and note whether the unit is a mainland-China model or an overseas variant. Do not rely on a family name alone; regional variants can follow different rollout plans.
- Run the installed-app compatibility check. In Huawei’s upgrade guidance, open the HarmonyOS Easy Upgrade or upgrade-matching entry associated with the upgrade. Review the AppGallery display it provides for your installed applications.
- Separate critical from non-critical apps. Mark the apps needed for authentication, payments, work, transport, health records, two-factor codes, messaging and device accessories. An app that is merely available is not automatically adequate for one of these workflows.
- Open each critical AppGallery listing. Check the current publisher, supported-device notes, sign-in method and the functions you need. Huawei’s matching result concerns obtaining the app; it does not promise that every feature works on every device.
- Save a recovery plan. Back up photos, contacts, messages and app data using the methods available on your current device. Keep access to recovery codes and alternate sign-in methods before changing the operating system.
App availability can change, so treat the result as a point-in-time check for that device rather than a permanent catalog guarantee. Recheck immediately before upgrading if the decision depends on one particular app.
Does HarmonyOS support Android apps?
There is no responsible universal answer such as “all Android apps work” or “no Android-origin apps work.” Huawei’s official material reviewed for this article does not establish a single rule covering every third-party application, model and region. The practical test is the AppGallery result for your installed apps and the current listing for each app you need.
An app may be obtainable yet still differ from its version on another platform. Functions can depend on the publisher’s implementation, account services, notifications, location services, payment components or companion hardware. For a business-critical workflow, ask the publisher whether the required feature set is supported on the precise HarmonyOS device, not merely whether an installation package exists.

As of Huawei information published through October 13, 2026, the cited HarmonyOS 6.1 and HarmonyOS 7 rollout information applies to mainland China. It should not be generalized to overseas models or to every phone sold under the same product name.

The absence of a model from a current list is not proof that it will never be added; Huawei says lists and interfaces can change. Conversely, a product family being present does not make every regional variant eligible.
What Huawei says about older models
Huawei Consumer Support’s HarmonyOS 7 FAQ uses the following official wording for the older models covered by that answer: “目前华为官方尚未发布相关信息，请持续关注官方后续发布的相关资讯，感谢您对HarmonyOS 7的关注与支持。” In English: “Huawei has not yet released relevant information; please continue to follow subsequent official announcements.” That is a statement that no upgrade information had been released, not a promise of future eligibility.
How to verify your model and rollout status
Use Huawei’s live upgrade interface rather than a copied list from an older article. The relevant checks are:

- Exact model: Match the full model identifier, not just a series name such as Mate or P.
- Market: Confirm whether the device is covered by the mainland-China rollout. The cited 6.1 and 7 pages do not establish equivalent overseas eligibility.
- Upgrade interface: In My Huawei, open Upgrade early access. Huawei says this interface is where users can reach upgrade eligibility information.
- Temporary status: If the model is not shown, Huawei describes it as temporarily unsupported for that upgrade. The interface may change when more models are added.
- Feature differences: Even on an eligible model, Huawei cautions that features vary by device.
Take a screenshot of the eligibility result and note the software version currently installed. This helps distinguish a rollout delay from an unsupported model if the offer disappears or changes.

Will my Huawei phone still get updates?
Support is version-specific, not a blanket promise covering every HarmonyOS device. Huawei’s software-platform notice lists the following effective end dates for technical support services, including software upgrades and updates:

Device-specific service can vary. End of support should therefore be read as the end of the stated routine support commitment, not as an assurance that a device will never receive any code again. Huawei’s notice says that, if a very serious security vulnerability occurs, it may provide a necessary security fix even after support has ended, depending on the actual circumstances. That is an exception Huawei reserves, not an ongoing update schedule.
What Huawei’s ecosystem numbers do—and do not—tell you
Huawei reported more than 90 million HarmonyOS 6 and HarmonyOS 7 terminal devices as of September 28, 2026, counting HarmonyOS phones, tablets and PCs. It also reported more than 450,000 obtainable apps and services across 18 categories on that date.
Those are vendor-reported aggregate figures. They do not show that a named app is available on your model, in your country or with every function you need. They also are not an independent count. Use them as evidence of ecosystem scale, not as a compatibility guarantee.

Compare your current device with the proposed upgrade using these decision axes:

Local replacement prices, warranties and overseas rollout status are not established by the cited information, so those details must be checked in your market before making a purchase decision.
Common failure cases and what to do
The upgrade offer is missing
Confirm the exact model identifier and region, then check My Huawei’s Upgrade early access interface. If the model is absent, Huawei characterizes it as temporarily unsupported for that upgrade. Avoid installing an unofficial package merely to bypass the rollout; the official interface is the source of eligibility information.
An installed app is not shown as obtainable
Check the AppGallery listing directly and verify whether you are viewing the correct regional storefront. Preserve an alternative access method for the service, such as a supported web account where the provider documents one. Do not assume that sideloading an unrelated package will reproduce the required security, notification or payment functions.

The app installs but a key feature fails
Record the exact feature, device model and HarmonyOS version. Check the publisher’s current support notes or contact its support channel. An installation result answers the obtainability question; it does not certify feature parity.
The device is outside the published support period
Plan around the stated end date rather than waiting for a possible emergency fix. Keep security-sensitive accounts protected, install any updates that are still offered and evaluate a supported replacement if your risk or app requirements justify it.
HarmonyOS, OpenHarmony and other manufacturers
Huawei’s HarmonyOS 7 FAQ says HarmonyOS is based on OpenHarmony. It also says whether another manufacturer launches an OpenHarmony-based phone depends on that manufacturer’s commercial decision. Open-source availability therefore does not guarantee a third-party phone running Huawei’s HarmonyOS, nor does it make one manufacturer’s app catalog or update policy transferable to another.

What international buyers should take from the current rollout
The most important geographic qualification is that the cited HarmonyOS 6.1 and 7 upgrade pages are for mainland China. An overseas owner should not infer eligibility, timing, app availability or support duration from a mainland-China announcement. Check the official interface and AppGallery storefront associated with the device’s actual market.
For any upgrade decision, use this order: verify the model and region, run the installed-app match, confirm critical functions, then check the current platform’s support status. That sequence answers the questions Huawei’s aggregate ecosystem figures and product-family names cannot answer for an individual device.
