They are a good buy for commuters and general listeners, but not for runners who need an immovable fit or anyone expecting the advertised battery life with both ANC and LDAC enabled.
What you get for the money
Each earbud weighs about 4.8 g and the charging case about 31.4 g, so the set feels exceptionally unobtrusive in a pocket or ear. Huawei uses an 11 mm multi-hole dynamic driver, Bluetooth 6.0, USB-C charging and an IP55 rating for the earbuds. The case itself is not water-resistant under that rating.

Launch pricing varies by market rather than converting cleanly between currencies: Notebookcheck lists a €129 recommended price, What Hi-Fi? reports £120 in the UK, and Huawei announced DKK 999 in Denmark, with sales beginning 12 October 2026. Check the local price before buying because those figures are regional recommended prices, not a universal global tariff.
ANC is genuinely useful, with a transparency compromise
The adaptive ANC system is the Neo’s strongest reason to exist. Huawei says its dual-channel architecture can reach a laboratory-tested average cancellation depth of 30 dB. Hands-on testing found it reduced the low, continuous rumble of metro trains and aircraft while also providing good passive isolation from the ear tips.
#1 Best Overall
That does not make the earbuds silent. Voices, sharp high-frequency sounds and sudden noises still come through, as they do with most small in-ear systems. The practical result is less engine and carriage noise at a comfortable listening level, rather than complete isolation.
Transparency mode is less successful. Independent testing noticed a layer of background noise, so the mode sounds less natural when you need to hear announcements or hold a quick conversation. If natural ambient awareness is a priority, try it in a shop before committing.
Sound, calls and controls
Music playback
Reviews consistently describe a broad, energetic presentation with enough detail for everyday listening. The 11 mm driver gives pop and electronic tracks convincing weight, while the app’s equalizer controls let you adjust the balance. LDAC and L2HC offer higher-resolution options than the basic SBC and AAC modes, although using them has a direct effect on endurance.

Phone calls
Three microphones, a bone-conduction sensor and anti-wind processing support calls. Independent listening tests found voices remained clear even in strong wind, and Notebookcheck also lists voice quality as a strength. That makes the Neo a sensible commuting and work-call choice, though no tiny earbud can remove every blast of wind or traffic noise.
Touch controls
The short-stem design looks discreet but leaves little room for controls. Touch commands work, yet they take practice and are harder to trigger reliably while running. The shortened stem also removes the easy pinch-style interaction found on some longer-stem designs. Plan to use the phone or watch for frequent changes if you exercise with them.
Battery life: the headline and the demanding-use result
Huawei’s laboratory figures are 10 hours of music without ANC or 6.5 hours with ANC. The case raises those totals to 40 and 24 hours respectively. Huawei measured AAC playback at 50% volume with a HUAWEI Pura 80 Pro+, connection quality prioritized and default settings; volume, source, interference and enabled features change the result.
Rank #3
| Mode | Huawei laboratory claim | Independent demanding-use result |
|---|---|---|
| Earbuds, ANC off | Up to 10 hours | Not stated |
| Earbuds, ANC on | Up to 6.5 hours | About 4.5 hours with ANC and LDAC enabled (Notebookcheck) |
| Case total, ANC off | Up to 40 hours | Not stated |
| Case total, ANC on | Up to 24 hours | Not stated |
The approximately 4.5-hour measurement is the important reality check: ANC plus LDAC is a much heavier workload than Huawei’s AAC laboratory setup. A ten-minute case charge is claimed to add about four hours of playback, useful before a journey but not a substitute for regular charging.
Comfort is excellent; workout security is not
For desk work, travel and long listening sessions, the light shells are a major advantage. Reviewers report that they remain comfortable for extended periods, and their passive seal helps the ANC.
Fit becomes less dependable during athletic movement. Notebookcheck found them comfortable but not secure enough for strenuous activity, while the short-stem touch surface is awkward to operate when running. IP55 protects the earbuds against dust and water jets, but it does not protect the case; wipe the buds dry before returning them to it.
Rank #4
Connectivity and app features
The Neo can maintain a connection with two devices simultaneously across Android, iOS and Windows, a valuable feature for moving between a phone and laptop. The feature set also includes an equalizer, spatial audio and LDAC. Multipoint reliability is a practical strength, but high-resolution codecs can reduce battery life and may require choosing which device receives priority.
There is no Auracast support, and the case lacks wireless charging. Those omissions matter only if you already use broadcast audio or expect to drop the case on a charging pad every night.
How the Neo compares with budget ANC expectations
Use these questions rather than the feature list alone:
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
- ANC effectiveness: strong for train and aircraft rumble, with a laboratory average cancellation claim of 30 dB.
- Transparency: functional but accompanied by noticeable background noise.
- Codec choice: unusually broad for the class, including LDAC and L2HC, with a battery penalty at higher settings.
- Multipoint: simultaneous two-device connection is supported across major operating systems.
- Comfort: among the Neo’s clearest advantages because of the 4.8 g earbuds.
- Exercise stability: the weak point; test the seal if running or doing high-impact training.
- Calls in wind: microphones, bone conduction and anti-wind processing produce clear results in independent tests.
- Charging: USB-C and quick charging, but no wireless charging.
Who should buy Huawei FreeBuds Neo?
Choose them if you want very light earbuds for commuting, effective low-frequency ANC, clear calls, dual-device switching and a rich control app. They offer more codec and software flexibility than their compact design suggests.
Look elsewhere if your priority is a locked-in fit for running, a completely natural transparency feed, wireless charging or long sessions with ANC and LDAC both active. In those cases, the Neo’s practical compromises outweigh its impressive specification sheet.
