The useful choice is between a visual design and the way it works: a share button sends a page to a service, while a follow button links to a profile. This guide gives you 23 design directions to evaluate, then compares documented implementation options and the checks that matter before adding buttons to a site.
What “HTML5 social media buttons” means
HTML5 social media buttons are website controls that let visitors share a page or visit a social profile. HTML5 does not define a special social-button element: buttons are typically built with links, markup, CSS, and sometimes a provider’s JavaScript. A design can be visually attractive but still fail to share the right URL, work well on a phone, or remain usable with a keyboard.

Keep the action clear. A share button opens a service’s sharing flow with the current page or content. A follow button takes the visitor to an account. An icon that looks like a share button is not proof that its network supports sharing from a third-party website.

- Icon-only inline row: compact icons placed near an article’s title or byline.
- Labeled inline buttons: icons paired with service names for clearer recognition.
- Text-only share links: restrained links suited to pages where branded iconography would distract.
- Rounded-square icons: soft corners and a consistent footprint for a friendly interface.
- Circular icon buttons: round controls that work well in a compact horizontal row.
- Brand-color buttons: recognizable network colors, with contrast checked against the text and background.
- Single-color buttons: one palette for a quieter, more consistent site design.
- Outlined buttons: transparent fills and visible borders that suit light or minimal layouts.
- Filled buttons: solid backgrounds that give each action a stronger visual target.
- Pill-shaped buttons: rounded, label-friendly controls that can wrap on narrow screens.
- Compact toolbar: a short row of the most relevant actions rather than every available network.
- Vertical inline stack: a column placed in the content flow when the page layout has room.
- Sticky side rail: a share bar that remains beside the article as a reader scrolls.
- Floating edge bar: controls positioned along a viewport edge, outside the main text column.
- Bottom-of-screen mobile bar: a persistent mobile treatment that needs careful testing so it does not cover content or controls.
- Share-count treatment: an optional count beside an action, only where the provider supports it and the displayed value is meaningful.
- Large tap-target buttons: generous clickable areas for touch use, without relying on a tiny icon as the only target.
- Accessible icon buttons: icons with an accessible name and a visible keyboard-focus indicator.
- Share-plus-follow group: distinct controls for sharing a page and visiting the publisher’s profile.
- Copy-link companion: a separate control for copying the page address, with clear feedback when it succeeds.
- Expandable share menu: a single trigger that reveals additional share destinations without crowding the page.
- Article-end action panel: a labeled set of share options after the content, where readers have finished the page.
- Responsive wrapping row: a flexible set of buttons that reflows instead of overflowing on small screens.
These concepts can be combined, but avoid combining persistent placement, an expanding menu, and a large action panel without testing the resulting interface. Choose a pattern that fits the page, and make each control’s action and keyboard behavior understandable.
Documented implementation options
Hosted services can reduce the amount of code a site owner must maintain and may offer layouts or integrations. They also introduce a dependency on a provider’s script, features, and policies. The provider descriptions below are vendor claims, not independent performance or accessibility test results.

| Option | What its documentation describes | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| AddToAny | A hosted universal sharing service with customizable buttons, floating bars, analytics integrations, share counts, CMS plugins, and icons it describes as scalable vector graphics. It advertises support for Bluesky and Threads. | Confirm current network actions and layout options. Its FAQ distinguishes follow links from share actions for Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, and Vimeo, whose services it says do not offer proper web share endpoints. |
| ShareThis | Inline and sticky layouts installed using provider JavaScript and HTML wrapper elements. Its documentation says the order of network elements determines their displayed order and describes installation routes for WordPress, Wix, and Weebly. | Its FAQ says Instagram and TikTok lack the external sharing endpoints needed for third-party sharing, while follow buttons are available. Recheck current platform support and test the chosen layout on your site. |
| WordPress directory plugins | The directory includes AddToAny, Buttonizer, Simple Share Buttons Adder, Shariff Wrapper, ShareThis, Social Warfare, and other options. WordPress.org describes Shariff Wrapper as privacy-oriented. | Directory listings and their active-install and tested-version labels change. Treat the directory as a shortlist, not a quality ranking; inspect maintenance, compatibility, features, and privacy details in the live listing. |
| Self-built links or controls | Can avoid a general-purpose provider widget and give the site control over presentation and included code. | Implementation and maintenance are your responsibility. Verify each service’s current sharing mechanism, construct the intended page URL and text correctly, and provide accessible names, focus states, and mobile behavior. |
For a broader discussion of hosted widgets and privacy-oriented alternatives, Colorlib’s comparison says AddThis shut down on May 31, 2023. Treat its broader statements about tracking or performance as secondary-source claims; review the current provider policies and the legal requirements that apply to your site.
How to choose a layout and implementation
- Decide which actions readers need. List the services your audience actually uses, and separate sharing a page from following an account. Do not promise a share action where a service only supports a profile link.
- Choose placement for the page. Inline buttons stay in the content flow; floating or sticky bars remain alongside the page. A fixed control may stay visible, but it can compete with content and obscure other interface elements, particularly on mobile.
- Compare implementation trade-offs. A hosted widget can simplify setup and offer managed layouts, but depends on provider code and policies. Self-built controls give more direct control but require you to handle markup, styling, link behavior, and ongoing updates.
- Check customization and integration. Confirm that the option supports your CMS, desired network order, page URL and title, styling needs, and any required analytics integration. Provider features can change.
- Test the complete experience. Check a real page at desktop and mobile widths, use a keyboard to reach and activate every control, and verify that focus is visible and labels make sense to assistive technology users.
- Review privacy and security. Inspect third-party script behavior, provider privacy policies, consent setup, and applicable jurisdiction-specific requirements. If you use a Content Security Policy, check the provider’s integration guidance rather than assuming its script will work unchanged.
Make sure the shared preview is right
A share control does not guarantee that a social service will display the correct title, description, or image. AddToAny’s FAQ says Facebook expects those details in Open Graph metadata. Check the metadata on the page itself and preview how the destination service renders it; button styling cannot repair missing or incorrect page metadata.

Performance and accessibility claims need testing
AddToAny says its icons are SVG and that its CMS plugins load asynchronously. Those descriptions do not establish a measured speed advantage on your site or prove conformance to an accessibility standard. ShareThis and other providers likewise need to be evaluated in the context of your page, configuration, and devices. No controlled performance comparison is established here.
Measure page behavior if speed is important, and test button operation rather than relying on a vendor’s accessibility description. At minimum, confirm that controls have meaningful accessible names, can be operated by keyboard, show focus, and remain usable at narrow widths.

WordPress plugin checks
The WordPress directory is useful for discovering candidates such as AddToAny, Shariff Wrapper, and other listed plugins, but install counts do not establish quality. Before choosing one, inspect its current maintenance and compatibility information in the live listing, confirm it supports the actions and placement you need, and review how it handles third-party code and privacy.
For context on the hosted-widget trade-off, Colorlib’s comparison of social-sharing widgets discusses privacy-oriented alternatives as well as hosted services. Treat privacy descriptions as a reason to inspect the plugin and provider policies, not as a substitute for checking the setup on your own site.
