Browserless is a better fit when PDF generation is one part of a broader hosted browser-automation workflow. Their billing units measure different things, so compare them with your own documents and usage—not by headline quota alone.
How the two services differ
| Area | Html2Pdf.app | Browserless |
|---|---|---|
| Product scope | Focused HTML-to-PDF conversion API. | PDF generation is one REST task in a broader hosted browser platform that also documents screenshots, scraping, rendered content, downloads, and browser functions. |
| Input and output | Accepts a publicly reachable URL or raw HTML; synchronous requests return PDF bytes. | POST /pdf accepts either url or html, not both, and returns application/pdf. |
| Background work | Supplying callBackUrl queues conversion and sends a completion callback. |
The reviewed PDF API describes a REST task; a callback workflow was not established in the reviewed documentation. |
| Metering basis | Credits are tied to generated document size: each 5 MB chunk consumes one credit. | A unit represents up to 30 seconds of browser connection time; longer sessions consume additional units. |
These capabilities are documented by Html2Pdf.app and Browserless’s PDF API and REST API overview.
When Html2Pdf.app is the better fit
- You primarily need to convert URLs or supplied HTML into PDFs, rather than use a hosted browser for several kinds of automation.
- You want a documented callback path for jobs that should finish asynchronously.
- Your cost model is easier to estimate from the size of the resulting PDF than from browser connection time.
The documented endpoint is POST https://api.html2pdf.app/v1/generate, with an X-API-Key header. The API accepts a URL or raw HTML in the html field. See the official documentation for the current request schema, print controls, encryption, and PDF permissions.
When Browserless is the better fit
- PDF output is only one part of a workflow that also needs other hosted browser tasks.
- You prefer usage metered by browser connection time and can estimate or measure how long representative pages take to render.
- You need the rendering options documented for its PDF endpoint, including paper format, margins, orientation, background printing, headers and footers, and navigation controls.
Browserless documents its PDF endpoint as using Puppeteer. Its API reference also lists error cases such as malformed requests, authorization failures, disallowed destinations, timeouts, rate limits, server errors, and service unavailability. Check the PDF API documentation and OpenAPI PDF reference when implementing request validation and error handling.

Compare pricing using the right units
The figures below are the plans displayed on the providers’ pricing pages at the time represented by the reviewed information; prices and quotas can change. Browserless labels its displayed prices as billed annually.
| Provider and plan | Displayed price | Included quota or limit |
|---|---|---|
| Html2Pdf.app Free | $0/month | 100 credits; 1 MB per-file limit |
| Html2Pdf.app Startup | $9/month | 1,000 credits |
| Html2Pdf.app Standard | $25/month | 5,000 credits |
| Html2Pdf.app Scale | $39/month | 10,000 credits |
| Browserless Free | $0/month | 1,000 units |
| Browserless Prototyping | $25/month, billed annually | 20,000 units |
| Browserless Starter | $140/month, billed annually | 180,000 units |
| Browserless Scale | $350/month, billed annually | 500,000 units |
Html2Pdf.app says each 5 MB chunk of a generated PDF uses one credit. Browserless defines one unit as up to 30 seconds per browser connection, with additional units for longer sessions. The quota totals are therefore not directly comparable. Confirm current terms on the Html2Pdf.app homepage and Browserless pricing page, then estimate cost with representative output sizes, page-load times, retries, and concurrency.

Evaluate rendering and job behavior before committing
Test representative pages
Include the pages that make your real workload difficult: JavaScript-rendered content, external fonts or images, long documents, and pages whose layout changes for print. Html2Pdf.app specifically notes that CSS media mode, available fonts and resources, and JavaScript load timing can affect rendering. A successful HTTP response alone does not establish that the PDF contains the expected content or pagination.
Choose synchronous or callback handling deliberately
For Html2Pdf.app, use the synchronous response when the caller can wait for PDF bytes. Use the documented callBackUrl workflow when conversion should run in the background, and design the receiving endpoint to validate callbacks and handle duplicate or delayed delivery according to the provider’s current documentation. For either service, define application-level timeouts, retry rules, and checks for a valid PDF before treating a job as complete.

Check print layout and accessibility needs
Browserless documents paper format, margins, orientation, background printing, headers and footers, and request/navigation controls. Html2Pdf.app documents page and print controls; consult its current schema for exact parameter names and supported values. Browserless says tagged Chrome output can carry structural information such as reading order and headings, but output depends on source markup and is not certified PDF/UA. If formal accessibility conformance matters, validate the resulting files rather than treating tagged output as certification.
Data handling requires a provider-specific review
Html2Pdf.app says generated PDFs are processed temporarily rather than permanently stored on its servers, and that raw HTML or text input is not stored in conversion logs. It also says selected request metadata and a source URL may be retained. These are vendor statements, not an independent audit; review its documentation, linked privacy policy, and data processing agreement for the complete conditions. The reviewed Browserless material does not establish a like-for-like retention comparison, so do not assume the providers handle sensitive inputs in the same way. Review each provider’s current privacy and processing terms against your own data and compliance requirements.

A practical selection checklist
- List monthly PDF volume, typical and largest file size, source-page behavior, and required completion time.
- Identify whether you need only PDF conversion or also Browserless’s other documented browser APIs.
- Record required print controls, callback or synchronous behavior, and maximum parallel jobs.
- Run representative documents through each candidate and verify page count, fonts, images, layout, and expected content.
- Estimate cost separately under each vendor’s current meter: output-size credits versus browser-time units.
- Review data retention, processing, access, and contractual terms for the actual inputs you plan to submit.
No comparative benchmark is established here, so performance and cost for your pages should be measured in your own workload rather than inferred from advertised quotas or undated marketing claims.

If your actual task is capturing a webpage as an image rather than generating a paginated PDF, ScreenshotNeo is a distinct alternative: it is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a direct replacement for every PDF workflow. It removes cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets before a shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed; and its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I compare the providers’ free quotas by number of PDFs?
No. Html2Pdf.app meters credits according to generated document size, while Browserless meters browser connection time; neither quota translates directly into a fixed number of documents.
Does Browserless tagged PDF output guarantee PDF/UA compliance?
No. Browserless says tagged output is not certified PDF/UA; validate files separately if formal conformance is required.
