Use PNG for most HTML screenshots. Its lossless compression keeps text, interface edges, diagrams and logos crisp, and it supports transparency. Choose JPG (also written JPEG) when the rendered page is mostly photographic and a smaller, lossy file is more important than pixel-perfect detail. For a modern website, consider WebP or AVIF with PNG/JPG fallbacks.

This is a content decision, not a rule based on the source HTML extension. The browser renders HTML into pixels first; the encoder then determines how those pixels are stored.
What changes between PNG and JPG?
PNG preserves exact pixels
PNG uses lossless compression, so decoding returns the same pixel values that were encoded. That matters for small fonts, one-pixel borders, icons, screenshots of software, and diagrams. PNG also has full alpha-transparency support, allowing portions of an image to be completely or partially transparent.
The trade-off is file size. A long page with large flat areas, text and many repeated UI elements can produce a substantially larger PNG than a JPEG of the same dimensions. Increasing viewport width, device scale or full-page height increases the number of pixels in either format.

JPG/JPEG discards detail to reduce size
JPEG is a lossy format designed for continuous tones. At an appropriate quality setting it can make photographs and gradients much smaller, but compression changes the pixels. On screenshots, that change appears as ringing around letters, muddy one-pixel lines, block-like areas and color bleed near high-contrast edges. JPEG has no alpha channel, so transparent areas must be flattened onto a background before encoding.
“JPG” and “JPEG” refer to the same format. The three-letter spelling is a historical filename convention; the codec and quality trade-offs are the same.
Transparency is a hard boundary
If the image will be placed over different backgrounds, retain an alpha channel with PNG, lossless WebP or AVIF. A JPEG export replaces transparent pixels with a chosen color. Converting that flattened JPEG back to PNG cannot restore the missing transparency.
How page content should influence your choice
Text-heavy dashboards and documentation
Choose PNG when people must read labels, code, tables or small controls at 100% zoom. Lossless WebP is an alternative when your delivery stack supports it. If the text does not need to be a fixed image, keep it as HTML and CSS instead: text inside an image is not selectable, searchable, zoomable or inherently accessible, and raster text needs extra pixels to look good on high-DPI displays.

Photographic landing pages
A page dominated by photographs can use JPEG when a little texture loss is acceptable. Export several quality levels and inspect the actual displayed size; the best setting depends on the particular photograph and its dimensions. Lossy WebP or AVIF can reduce the transfer further while retaining a photographic appearance.

Charts, logos and diagrams
Use PNG or lossless WebP when the artwork is raster and edges must remain exact. Prefer SVG for geometric shapes or diagrams that need to scale across sizes. SVG is not a drop-in replacement for every screenshot: it represents vector artwork, not an arbitrary browser frame containing effects or photographs.
Mixed pages
Do not assume one format is ideal for every asset in a page screenshot. A full-page capture containing both UI text and photos normally benefits from lossless PNG or WebP for the composite image. If you control the page itself, serve photographs as separate responsive assets and leave the text in HTML.
Modern delivery: WebP, AVIF and fallbacks
WebP and AVIF generally provide better compression than older PNG and JPEG files. Google Developers reported in 2025 that lossless WebP images were 26% smaller than PNGs, while lossy WebP images were 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEG images at equivalent SSIM quality. Those are published comparisons, not a guarantee for every screenshot; your result depends on content, dimensions and encoder settings. Google also reported that transparency adds about 22% to lossless WebP bytes and that lossy WebP with transparency is typically three times smaller than PNG.
Use the HTML <picture> element when you want modern formats with compatibility fallbacks:

A practical HTML-to-image workflow
- Decide whether you need a raster at all. If CSS, HTML or a vector can create the visual, eliminating an image resource usually saves more bytes than compressing one. Keep live text live when possible.
- Stabilize the page. Set the final viewport, wait for fonts and lazy images, and remove transient overlays. A capture taken before layout settles can contain missing images or shifted text.
- Classify the pixels. Text, controls, line art and transparency point to PNG or lossless WebP. Photographic, continuous-tone content can use JPEG, lossy WebP or AVIF.
- Capture at the required dimensions. Full-page and retina captures create more pixels and therefore larger files. Use the smallest dimensions that preserve the intended display quality.
- Encode and inspect. For JPEG, compare multiple quality settings. Check small text, diagonals, gradients, transparent edges and the file at its actual CSS size, not only zoomed in.
- Deliver responsively. Pair WebP or AVIF with PNG/JPEG fallbacks through
<picture>when browser compatibility matters.

Cost, caching and reliability considerations
Choose quality by outcome, not habit
PNG is usually the safer archival choice for a screenshot because it does not introduce generation loss. JPEG is practical when storage or transfer size dominates and the image is photo-like. Repeatedly opening and re-saving a JPEG can add further loss, so keep a lossless source when future edits matter.
Measure at the delivered size
Compare encoded byte size and visible quality at the CSS dimensions your users receive. A retina image displayed at half its intrinsic width may look excellent but still cost more to download. Conversely, downscaling a text screenshot too aggressively can make labels unreadable even when the file is tiny.

Use caching intentionally

Troubleshooting format and capture problems
Text looks fuzzy in a PNG
The encoder is not the likely cause if the PNG is lossless. Check that the capture viewport and device scale match the intended display, that fonts finished loading, and that the image was not resized with a smoothing filter after capture.
JPEG has halos around letters
Lower-quality JPEG quantization is damaging high-contrast edges. Raise the quality, keep the image at its native size, or switch to PNG/lossless WebP for text and UI.
Transparent areas became white or black
The export was flattened or the chosen format lacks alpha support. Use PNG, lossless WebP or AVIF and verify that the consuming application preserves transparency.

Images or web fonts are missing

The choice is driven by pixels, transparency and delivery constraints: PNG for exact UI detail, JPEG for photo-like content when loss is acceptable, and WebP or AVIF for modern delivery with fallbacks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is changing .jpg to .png a real conversion?
No. Renaming the extension does not change the encoded data. Decode the JPEG and export it through an image editor or conversion tool; lost JPEG detail and transparency cannot be recreated by the conversion.
Can one screenshot contain both text and photographs?
Yes. Judge the dominant requirement of the composite capture. If legible text and UI edges are critical, start with PNG or lossless WebP; if the capture is mainly photographic and approximate detail is acceptable, test JPEG or lossy WebP at several quality settings.
Should I keep the original HTML after exporting an image?
Yes. The HTML remains the editable, searchable and accessible source. Keep it when you may need a new viewport, updated content, selectable text or another image format later.
