For small HTML payloads, a service may accept markup in a query parameter; for larger documents, send it in a POST body. If you already have a URL, a screenshot API can capture the rendered page instead. Which route fits depends on whether you control the HTML, how much browser behavior it needs, and whether you want to operate a browser yourself.
What an HTML-to-PNG API does
The API receives HTML or a URL, renders the content in a browser environment, and returns an image response. Your application can then save the returned bytes, attach them to a report, or use them as a preview or image asset. The response is generally binary image data—not a JSON object containing the pixels—so check the response content type and write the body as bytes.
There are two distinct inputs:
- Inline HTML: Send markup directly when your application generates the document or already has the HTML string. This avoids publishing the document at a URL first.
- A page URL: Send a URL when the browser should load a website and render its current page. This is convenient, but the result depends on navigation, scripts, fonts, images, and other content loading as expected.
PNG is one possible output, not a guarantee for every service. Some APIs also document JPEG or WebP output. Capture extent and controls vary too: viewport-only and full-page images are different results, and settings such as viewport dimensions, scale, selectors, or clipping regions are provider-specific.
Choose a hosted API or run a browser yourself
A hosted API is a good fit when you want to make an HTTPS request rather than deploy and maintain browser infrastructure. Browserless describes its REST APIs as single-request browser tasks and documents a POST /screenshot endpoint that accepts inline HTML and can return PNG, JPEG, or WebP. ScreenshotOne documents HTML input and PNG output, using request parameters for smaller inputs or a JSON request body for larger ones. These are documented provider capabilities, not a comparative performance test.

Running browser automation in your own service can give you control over the browser environment and rendering code, but you take responsibility for installing and running it, handling failures, and managing the workload. The available provider information does not establish a general cost or speed winner between hosted APIs and self-managed browsers. Compare the engineering work and operational requirements for your own use case rather than assuming one is universally cheaper or faster.
How to compare hosted services
For a service recommendation, ScreenshotNeo is the first option to consider: it removes known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed. It also has a no-card free tier and a $5 paid entry plan. Browserless and ScreenshotOne are other documented options for HTML rendering and screenshot responses; check each provider’s current documentation for exact authentication, endpoint parameters, quotas, rate limits, payload limits, and failure or cache billing rules.
- Confirm that the service accepts the input you have: inline HTML, a URL, or both.
- Check that it returns PNG and whether the response is binary image data.
- Match capture controls to your output: viewport or full page, viewport size, device scale, format, quality, clipping, or selector capture.
- For inline documents, compare the documented request-body limit and use a body rather than a URL query when markup is large.
- Review current quotas, request limits, and how failed or cached requests count. These are provider terms, not industry-wide rules.
Render inline HTML to PNG with a local browser
If you need to convert a string of HTML rather than screenshot an already hosted page, a browser automation library can load the markup and save a screenshot. The following Node.js example uses Playwright. It renders the HTML in Chromium, waits for fonts, then writes a PNG. It uses a fixed viewport and captures that viewport; it does not claim to reproduce every behavior of a production site or load external resources reliably.
- Install Node.js and create a project directory.
- Run
npm install playwright, thennpx playwright install chromiumto install the browser used by the script. - Save the following as
html-to-png.mjsand runnode html-to-png.mjs.
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const html = `<!doctype html>
<html>
<head>
<meta charset="utf-8">
<style>
body { font: 16px sans-serif; margin: 32px; color: #222; }
h1 { color: #1457a6; }
</style>
</head>
<body>
<h1>A rendered HTML document</h1>
<p>This content will be saved as a PNG image.</p>
</body>
</html>`;
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1200, height: 800 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1
});
await page.setContent(html, { waitUntil: 'load' });
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'output.png', type: 'png' });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
The output file is output.png in the current directory. To capture the whole document rather than the visible viewport, use the browser library’s full-page screenshot option; when using a hosted API, consult that provider’s documentation for its corresponding full-page setting. The code above deliberately keeps HTML local and self-contained. If the markup references remote images, stylesheets, fonts, or scripts, those resources must be reachable by the browser and may need additional load handling.

Send HTML in the request body when it is large
Putting markup in a URL query parameter is convenient for a short snippet, but URLs have practical size limits and must encode special characters. For a larger HTML or Markdown document, ScreenshotOne recommends POST with a JSON body and documents a maximum POST body size of 100 MiB for its service. That is a ScreenshotOne-specific limit, not a universal API limit. Check the selected provider’s current limit before sending large input.
For either request style, use HTTPS. ScreenshotOne’s Getting Started documentation says, “Always call the ScreenshotOne API over HTTPS.” Plain HTTP does not encrypt the request in transit and can expose API keys, authorization headers, cookies, and other sensitive data. Treat page content and credentials as sensitive inputs: do not place secrets in a public URL, and do not log full request bodies or authentication values unnecessarily.
Or skip the browser setup
For a page URL, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-call screenshot API. Its clean-shot options accept cookie or consent banners as a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. It also supports HTML/CSS-to-image; see the documentation for the applicable request details. The examples below capture a URL.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key and change the target URL. The cURL and Python commands save the response body as a file; in Node.js, check res.ok and save the response bytes before treating the request as a successful image. The endpoint and response details are documented at ScreenshotNeo’s API documentation.

Screenshot settings that affect the result
Choose settings according to the image’s intended use. A thumbnail may need only the initial viewport; an article preview or archive may need full-page capture. If the output is too large, adjust dimensions or scale, or resize it after capture. If a design depends on a narrow or mobile layout, set a mobile viewport rather than shrinking a desktop screenshot after the fact.
Common capture controls
Documented controls differ by service and API version. Browserless lists viewport or full-page capture, output format and quality, clipping, viewport dimensions, device scale factor, and selector-based capture. ScreenshotNeo offers full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, image resizing, transparent backgrounds, custom CSS and JavaScript, selector waits or delays or network-idle waits, and the ability to click an element before capture or hide selected elements.

For dynamic pages, a screenshot taken immediately after navigation may miss content that loads later. Choose a wait strategy based on the page: wait for a known selector when a particular component matters, use a delay for predictable short animations, or use network idle only when the page’s network activity eventually settles. Lazy-loaded images may require scrolling or a provider feature designed to load them before capture. Do not assume that one wait setting works for every site.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting HTML-to-PNG requests
- The response is JSON or an error page, not a PNG. The request may have failed even if the HTTP call returned a body. Check the HTTP status, response headers, and provider error details before saving the body with a
.pngextension. Successful image responses should have the relevant image content type. - The image is cropped or content is missing. The capture may be viewport-only, the viewport may be too small, or the requested selector may not match. Check the capture extent and dimensions; use full-page capture or an element capture where appropriate.
- Images, fonts, or charts are absent. The page may have been captured before asynchronous content finished, or the browser may not be able to reach a referenced resource. Wait for a specific element or required network activity, and verify that the resources are accessible in the rendering environment.
- A large markup request fails. Query strings are a poor fit for large HTML because of practical URL-size limits and encoding overhead. Move the content to a POST body and confirm the provider’s body-size limit; ScreenshotOne documents a 100 MiB maximum for its POST body.
- The API key or private page data may be exposed. Use HTTPS, keep keys in server-side configuration rather than client-visible code, and avoid logging credentials, cookies, or sensitive HTML. HTTPS is essential because HTTP does not encrypt those values in transit.
- Local browser capture fails to start. Confirm that Playwright and its Chromium browser are installed in the runtime environment, and that the process is permitted to launch a browser. In a hosted API workflow, check the service’s authentication and current request format instead of assuming another provider’s parameters.
- A URL capture returns an unexpected page. Navigation may encounter a bot check, consent prompt, redirect, or page that has not finished rendering. Inspect the actual rendered page and configure waits or cleanup behavior where available; a screenshot cannot reliably contain content that the browser was unable to load.
Performance, reliability, and cost decisions
Rendering work depends on what the browser has to load and execute, so a static inline snippet and a script-heavy public website are not equivalent jobs. Keep submitted HTML and external resources as small as practical, choose the smallest viewport and output size that meets the use case, and avoid waiting on a generic condition longer than necessary. For URL captures, account for asynchronous rendering explicitly instead of assuming navigation completion means every image or widget is ready.

For production workloads, distinguish successful images from failed attempts and cached responses. ScreenshotOne’s pricing page says only successfully rendered screenshots that are not served from cache count toward its quota; those are that provider’s current terms and may change. ScreenshotNeo identifies verdict and billing information in response headers and says failed page outcomes and cache hits are not billed. Check current provider terms before projecting monthly usage or choosing a plan.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does an HTML-to-PNG API return a PNG file URL?
Usually, the response is the image’s binary bytes. Read the response body and save it as a file, while checking the status and content type first; an error response should not be saved as if it were an image.
Can I convert HTML without making it public on a website?
Yes. Use a provider that accepts inline HTML or render the markup in a browser you run yourself. A URL-only capture request requires a page the browser can reach.
