Playwright and Puppeteer ask a browser to print a page; WeasyPrint uses its own HTML/CSS rendering implementation; wkhtmltopdf is a command-line tool built on Qt WebKit. Choose based on the HTML you need to render, your runtime and deployment constraints, and the PDF features you require—not an assumed speed or fidelity winner.
Start by choosing the rendering model
The first decision is whether your source needs a full browser runtime or whether a dedicated HTML-to-PDF renderer suits it. Browser-based tools are a natural fit when a page depends on browser behavior or JavaScript. WeasyPrint is a separate rendering implementation for creating PDF documents from HTML. wkhtmltopdf converts HTML to PDF through Qt WebKit from the command line. The available documentation does not provide a controlled comparison of all four rendering approaches on the same documents, so there is no evidence-based universal ranking for speed or visual fidelity.
| Option | Rendering approach | Useful fit | Key qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Playwright | Browser page PDF API | Projects already using Playwright or requiring browser page behavior and configurable print output. | PDF generation uses print CSS by default; screen styling requires explicit media emulation. |
| Puppeteer | Browser page PDF API | Projects already using Puppeteer and its page-oriented PDF API. | PDF generation uses print media; emulate screen media first if required. |
| WeasyPrint | Purpose-built HTML/CSS-to-PDF implementation | HTML documents and workflows that benefit from its documented PDF features. | Rendering is not a browser’s print API; output may change across versions and should be regression-checked. |
| wkhtmltopdf | Qt WebKit command-line renderer | Existing deployments that rely on its command-line workflow. | Check current status, binary availability, security and license implications for the exact distribution before adopting it for new production work. |
For each candidate, evaluate the actual HTML and CSS your application produces, JavaScript needs, page-break behavior, fonts, output controls, deployment environment, security constraints, license obligations and maintenance expectations.
Understand print media before judging the result
A web page on screen and the same page printed to PDF can use different CSS. Playwright documents that page.pdf() generates a PDF using print CSS media, and Puppeteer documents the same default. If you want the screen stylesheet instead, both projects document emulating the screen media type before generating the PDF.
#1 Best Overall
This distinction affects layout, visibility, colors and page breaks. Before investigating a “wrong” PDF, confirm that the intended print styles exist and that the library is rendering the media type you expect. Decide whether the PDF should follow print-specific rules or resemble the screen page, then configure and test that choice deliberately.
Generate a PDF with Playwright
Playwright’s page.pdf() returns a PDF buffer. A minimal Node.js example that loads a page and writes the generated PDF is:
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
const pdf = await page.pdf({
format: 'A4',
printBackground: true,
margin: {
top: '20mm',
right: '15mm',
bottom: '20mm',
left: '15mm'
}
});
require('node:fs').writeFileSync('page.pdf', pdf);
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
This example assumes Playwright and a compatible browser are installed in the runtime. Use an actual target URL and representative content in your application; a page’s load lifecycle alone does not guarantee every asynchronous widget or image is ready. The official Playwright Page.pdf() API documents the options and defaults.
Set page geometry and appearance explicitly
Playwright documents paper formats, custom dimensions and units, margins, page ranges, header and footer templates, print backgrounds, CSS page-size preference, and tagged output. Set the paper size and margins to match the document rather than relying on implicit defaults. Background printing and tagged output default to false, so enable them where the use case requires them. Header and footer templates can add repeated page furniture; verify the final output, especially where page numbering or document content could overlap.

Choose the right readiness condition
For dynamic pages, decide what “ready” means in your application. Network idle may be suitable for some pages, but a long-lived request can prevent it from occurring, while a page can still update after network activity stops. Where possible, wait for a meaningful application selector or state before calling page.pdf(). Test lazy-loaded images and content that appears after interaction or a delay.
Use Puppeteer when it fits the existing browser stack
Puppeteer exposes PDF creation through Page.pdf(). The API generates using print media, and its documentation directs developers to emulate screen media first when screen styling is wanted. Its options are documented separately from the method overview; consult the Puppeteer Page.pdf() API for the exact options available in the version you deploy.
As with Playwright, include page setup, readiness and output handling in the implementation—not just the PDF call. Use print CSS for deliberate print layouts, set paper dimensions and margins for the intended destination, and verify backgrounds and page breaks in the resulting file. When both browser automation projects appear suitable, prefer the one already supported by your application’s browser tooling and operational practices; the cited documentation does not establish that one produces universally better PDFs.
When WeasyPrint may be the better fit
WeasyPrint is free, open-source software for creating PDF documents from HTML. Its API reference documents clickable hyperlinks, PDF bookmarks or outlines, attachments, forms, and PDF/A and PDF/UA generation. Those features can be relevant for reports, invoices, books, forms and other document-oriented workflows.

Check conformance claims separately
WeasyPrint’s documentation makes an important distinction: it supports generating PDF/A and PDF/UA files, but does not guarantee the generated documents are valid against those standards. If regulatory, archival or accessibility requirements apply, validate the actual output with the required conformance tools and review process. Treat generation support as a capability, not certification.
Plan fonts and upgrades
WeasyPrint finds fonts through Pango and the host’s font configuration. A PDF that works on a developer machine can differ in a container or production host if fonts or font configuration are missing or different. Install and configure the required fonts in the deployment environment and include representative non-Latin text, weights and fallback behavior in regression checks.
The project warns that rendering changes between versions can be important. Pin and review upgrades, then compare generated PDFs for representative pages after a version change. The WeasyPrint documentation describes its API and project behavior; its official site also lists professional assistance through CourtBouillon at WeasyPrint’s website. If considering paid support, confirm current terms and availability directly with the provider.
Where wkhtmltopdf fits—and what to verify
The official project overview describes wkhtmltopdf and wkhtmltoimage as LGPLv3 open-source command-line tools using Qt WebKit to render HTML into PDF and image formats, and says they can run headlessly without a display service. That can suit an existing system built around its command-line workflow, but the overview is not enough to establish the present security posture, current binary availability or suitability of a particular package.

For a new production system, verify the specific release, distribution and dependency chain you intend to deploy. Review its maintenance state and security implications, test your HTML against that exact build, and get license review for the tool, wrapper and binary distribution. The project overview is at wkhtmltopdf.org. A community-maintained comparison can help discover candidates, but confirm maintenance and licensing in each candidate’s own repository and release materials rather than treating a secondary list as definitive.
Test the document, not just the API call
A successful response or output file does not establish that a PDF is correct for readers. Build a small regression set from real documents and inspect the generated files in the target runtime.
- Page geometry: verify paper size, orientation, margins and clipping.
- Print styles: test the intended media type, hidden elements, colors and background graphics.
- Pagination: check forced and natural breaks, long tables, repeated headings, widows and orphans, and content close to page boundaries.
- Assets and fonts: include remote and local images, lazy images, required fonts, fallback glyphs and slow or unavailable resources.
- Interactive or dynamic content: test the actual waits needed for application data, charts and client-rendered text to appear.
- PDF functions: check links, outlines, forms, attachments, page ranges, headers and footers where required.
- Accessibility and archival needs: validate the output against the applicable requirements rather than assuming an option alone guarantees conformance.
Keep test fixtures stable and compare output after changes to CSS, source HTML, fonts, browser/runtime versions or renderer versions. Visual inspection is useful for layout; where the document has strict requirements, add checks for text, links, page count and conformance as appropriate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Deployment, reliability and cost considerations
Browser automation means operating a browser-capable runtime in addition to your application code. Account for browser installation and compatibility, memory use under concurrent jobs, process lifecycle and isolation in the host or container. WeasyPrint instead depends on its rendering implementation and host font setup. wkhtmltopdf brings its own Qt WebKit-based executable and distribution considerations. The available sources do not support a numeric performance comparison, so measure the workload you expect rather than selecting on an unverified speed claim.
Best Value
For reliability, define behavior for failed navigation, missing assets, timeouts and malformed or unexpectedly large documents. Bound concurrent conversions, set appropriate timeouts, record which source and renderer version created each file, and retain a reproducible test case for failures. If documents contain untrusted HTML or URLs, treat conversion as a security boundary: restrict network access and local-file access according to your application’s needs, and review the chosen renderer’s security guidance and configuration before deployment.
Compare total operating cost, not just whether a library is free or open source: include implementation, runtime dependencies, container size, upgrades, font management, validation and support. WeasyPrint’s official site lists CourtBouillon professional-support packages, but price and geographic availability can change, so check the provider’s current offer if support is part of your decision.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a website screenshot rather than a paginated document, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API that returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. It is a different output path from choosing an HTML-to-PDF library: use it when capturing a rendered website as an image or PDF is the goal. The cURL example below saves a WebP capture; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and output options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. A practical selection checklist
- Choose browser-based rendering if you need browser behavior and already operate Playwright or Puppeteer; choose WeasyPrint if its independent HTML/CSS implementation and PDF capabilities suit your documents; treat wkhtmltopdf primarily as a candidate to validate for an existing or specifically justified deployment.
- Decide whether the PDF follows print CSS or screen CSS, and configure media behavior accordingly.
- Specify page dimensions, margins, backgrounds, headers/footers and document features before implementation.
- Confirm font and native runtime dependencies in the same host or container that will create production PDFs.
- Test representative pages and dynamic content, then regression-check upgrades.
- Review security, licenses and maintenance for the exact versions, wrappers and distributions you intend to ship.
For JavaScript applications already using browser automation, start with the browser project your team operates. For document generation where the documented WeasyPrint features match your needs, evaluate it with your own fonts and layouts. Keep wkhtmltopdf under consideration only after checking the particular build and deployment risks. None of these choices can be declared the universal winner from the available documentation alone.
