You are not converting the page’s raw HTML source into a semantic JPEG file; the browser first lays out the page, runs its scripts, loads visible content, and captures the result. For a privacy-focused local workflow, Page to Image is the closest match: it captures a visible area, selected area, or entire page and saves PNG or JPEG. GoFullPage is better for unusually long or structurally complex pages, while FireShot is the stronger choice when you need annotations, redaction, PDF variants, or several image formats.
Which HTML-to-JPG extension should you use?
| Tool | Best for | Capture scope | Output and editing | Privacy and limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Page to Image | Direct webpage-to-JPEG conversion | Visible, selected, or full page | PNG or JPEG; adjustable JPEG quality, crop, annotations, blur/redaction, clipboard, PDF | Processing is local and files go to Downloads; cannot capture browser settings, the extension store, or developer tools |
| GoFullPage | Very long or complex pages | Complete page, including inner scrollable areas and embedded iframes | PNG, JPG, or PDF | Advertises no extra permissions; check the current store listing because permissions and browser support can change |
| FireShot | Editing-heavy workflows | Full page or selected element; multi-tab capture | PNG, GIF, JPEG, BMP; crop, resize, arrows, text, blur, effects, PDF and clipboard options | Paid/pro features and external integrations should be verified in the current listing |
| Firefox built-in Screenshots | No extension installation | Browser capture tools, including full-page and element commands in Developer Tools | Image download; Developer Tools full-page output is documented as PNG | Does not provide the same direct JPEG workflow as the extensions above |
For a normal Chrome page that must become a local JPG, start with Page to Image. Choose GoFullPage when nested scrolling regions or iframes matter. Choose FireShot when the capture needs review, markup, masking, or multiple export formats.
How to save a webpage as a full-page JPG with Page to Image
- Open the page. Wait for the main content, fonts, images, and client-rendered sections to finish loading. If the page has an expandable menu or consent dialog that changes the layout, handle it before capturing.
- Open the extension. Select Page to Image from the browser’s extensions menu. Use the full-page option for the complete document, visible-area for what is currently on screen, or selected-area to draw a rectangle.
- Review the rendered capture. Check the top, bottom, sticky headers, lazy-loaded images, and any component with its own scrollbar. A full-page capture represents what the browser rendered, not the source HTML.
- Choose JPEG. Select JPEG/JPG as the export format and set quality. Higher quality preserves text and gradients but creates a larger file; lower quality is useful for quick sharing or upload limits.
- Crop or mark up if needed. Page to Image includes crop, annotation, blur/redaction, and clipboard actions. Use blur or redaction for personal data before sharing.
- Save and verify. The extension saves locally, normally in Downloads. Open the file and check that the extension is
.jpgor.jpeg, the bottom of the page is present, and text is legible at the intended display size.
Why the result may differ from the live page
Lazy images can appear only after scrolling, animations can be caught between frames, and sticky elements may repeat or overlap in a stitched full-page result. Pause carousels, expand the content you need, and allow delayed images to load before invoking the capture. If a page uses an inner scroll area, capture that region separately or switch to GoFullPage, which advertises support for inner scrollable elements and embedded iframes.
GoFullPage for long and complex pages
GoFullPage is designed for a complete-page capture without requesting extra permissions, according to its Chrome listing. It is a practical choice for documentation, dashboards, and pages where important content sits below the viewport. Its listing describes handling inner scrollable elements and embedded iframes, and its export choices include PNG, JPG, and PDF.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Open the target page and let scripts and images settle.
- Run GoFullPage from the extensions menu.
- Wait while it scrolls and assembles the page; do not switch tabs or close the page during capture.
- Inspect the assembled image for repeated fixed headers, missing lazy content, or clipped nested panels.
- Export as JPG and confirm the file dimensions and readability.
Browser-store metadata changes over time, so review the current listing and requested permissions before installing or deploying it in a managed environment. The official site reports a Firefox Add-ons release dated September 7, 2026; availability can still vary by browser version and region.
#1 Best Overall
FireShot when you need editing or several formats
FireShot supports full-page and element capture, single-page or split-page PDF, crop and resize, text and arrow annotations, blur and other effects, clipboard copying, and exports as PNG, GIF, JPEG, or BMP. It also describes multi-tab capture and integrations with external editors or sharing services.
Use it when the screenshot is part of a review process: capture the page, crop to the relevant panel, blur an email address, add an arrow, and export the format your recipient requires. Treat Pro-only functions and external integrations as listing details that may change; check the current store entry before relying on them.
Firefox without an extension
Firefox includes a Screenshots feature that downloads a captured image with a timestamped filename. Firefox Developer Tools also provide an element-screenshot command and a full-page screenshot command. Mozilla documents PNG output for the Developer Tools full-page command, so this is a useful no-install option but not a direct JPEG workflow. If you specifically need JPG, open the downloaded PNG in an image editor and export it as JPEG, or use a Firefox-compatible extension that offers JPEG output.
Rank #2
JPG or PNG: which should you choose?
| Choose JPG when… | Choose PNG when… |
|---|---|
| You need a smaller file for a photo-rich page, email attachment, or upload limit. | The page is mostly text, tables, icons, or sharp interface controls. |
| Minor compression artifacts are acceptable. | Exact edges, small type, transparency, or lossless editing matter. |
| The destination specifically requires JPEG/JPG. | You expect to crop, annotate, or re-edit repeatedly. |
JPEG quality is a trade-off, not a resolution setting. If small text looks smeared, raise quality or export PNG instead. Converting a low-quality JPG back to PNG cannot restore detail.
Privacy, permissions, and restricted pages
Local processing
Page to Image says captures are processed locally and saved to Downloads, which keeps the page image on your machine unless you later share it. FireShot’s external-editor and sharing integrations can send data outside the browser when you invoke them; use those only when your policy permits.
Pages extensions cannot capture
Chrome blocks screenshots of browser-internal addresses such as chrome://, chrome-extension://, the Chrome Web Store, and about: pages. Page to Image similarly warns about settings, the extension store, and Developer Tools. This is a browser security boundary, not a missing capture option. To document a settings screen, use the browser’s own UI or a system-level screenshot tool where allowed.
Sensitive content
Before saving or uploading, inspect the image for account names, tokens, addresses, customer records, and notification popups. Prefer local processing, redact before sharing, and avoid capturing a page while private data is visible in another tab or overlay.

When an API is better than a browser extension
For repeatable jobs, server-side capture, CI pipelines, or AI-agent workflows, an API avoids opening a browser on every machine. ScreenshotNeo is the first service to try: it removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; only clean shots are billed; failed loads, bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed; and its lowest paid plan is $5 for 3,000 shots.
Or skip the browser setup:
One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The API accepts options for full-page and selector capture, dark mode, device and viewport settings, retina scale, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, blocked resources, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, caching, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture, and PDF layout.
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the complete parameter list. A JPEG request can be as simple as:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The endpoint chooses the response image type from the request options and returns status headers including X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed, so your job can distinguish a clean capture from a failed or unbilled result.
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Its Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to try the API.
Troubleshooting checklist
- Only the visible viewport was saved: choose full-page capture, not visible-area capture, and wait for assembly to finish.
- The bottom is blank: scroll through the page once so lazy content loads, then capture again.
- An inner panel is clipped: use GoFullPage for pages with nested scrollbars, or capture the panel as a selected element.
- Text is blurry: increase JPEG quality, export PNG, or capture at a larger viewport/retina scale.
- A cookie dialog covers content: accept or dismiss it before capture, subject to the site’s consent requirements.
- The extension refuses the page: check whether the address is a restricted browser-internal page or an extension-store page.
- Headers, chat bubbles, or animations repeat: hide or pause them where the extension supports it, or capture after the animation settles.
- JPEG is unavailable in Firefox’s native tool: save the PNG and convert it in an image editor, or use an extension with JPEG export.
Practical choice
Use Page to Image for a private, local webpage-to-JPG workflow; GoFullPage for long pages with nested scrolling or iframes; FireShot for annotation and format flexibility; and Firefox’s native tools when installing an extension is not acceptable. For automated, repeatable captures, ScreenshotNeo removes browser setup and reports whether each response was a clean, billable shot.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can an extension convert an HTML file without opening it?
These tools capture what a browser renders. Open the local HTML file in a browser first; they do not turn raw source markup into a semantic JPEG document.
Will a full-page JPG include content below the fold?
Yes, when you choose full-page capture and the page allows scrolling. Lazy-loaded or protected content may still require a prior scroll or a different capture method.
Recommended Free Tools
Why can’t I capture a Chrome settings page?
Chrome restricts extensions from capturing browser-internal and store pages, including chrome://, chrome-extension://, and the Web Store.
Is JPEG always smaller than PNG?
Usually, especially for photographic content, but highly textual pages can remain clearer as PNG and may not become dramatically larger after optimization.
