There is no single universal HP printer driver for Windows 11. The reliable method is to identify the exact printer model, open HP’s Software and Driver Downloads page, select the Windows 11 option offered for that model, and install the package that matches the features you need. Depending on the printer, HP may offer the HP app, HP Easy Start, a full-feature driver, a basic driver, or Windows’ built-in driver.
Windows 11 can install many HP printers automatically over USB or a network, but automatic setup may provide only core printing. Scanning, faxing, maintenance tools, and model-specific settings can require HP software or a full-feature package. Use the steps below to choose the correct route instead of downloading a driver intended for a different HP model.

What you need before downloading
Find the exact printer identity
Look at the front or top of the printer, its control-panel information screen, or the label on the rear or inside the cartridge door. Record the complete product name and model number, including letters, numbers, and regional suffixes. A name such as a product family is not always specific enough because several models can share a similar design but use different software.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the model name is difficult to read, HP’s driver portal can also search by serial number or product number. These identifiers are normally printed on the same label as the serial number. Entering an exact identifier prevents the download page from presenting a package for a near-identical model.

Check the Windows 11 computer
Confirm that the computer is running Windows 11 and note whether it uses a conventional x64 processor or an ARM64 processor. HP documents Windows 11, including ARM64 devices, as supported for its HP Print Support Application, but that application is offered only for selected printer families. This does not mean every older HP driver package supports every Windows 11 device.
Have the printer’s connection method ready. A USB installation requires a working data cable, while a network installation requires the printer and computer to be on the same Wi-Fi or wired network during discovery. You can also add a network printer through Windows without first downloading a package when Windows has a compatible built-in driver.
Which HP driver or setup route should you choose?
HP presents different options because printers do not all expose the same features. Use the exact model listing as the final authority, then match the package to the work you expect the printer to do.

| Route | What it provides | Choose it when | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| HP app | Current HP setup and printer-management experience for Windows 11 PCs | You want guided setup and the features exposed by your model | An HP account is required for full functionality |
| HP Easy Start | Guided discovery and installation for models that offer it | The model’s download page lists Easy Start as the supported installer | Availability depends on the printer and operating system |
| Full-feature driver | Printer drivers plus tools for printing and scanning | You use scanning, maintenance, settings, or other multifunction features | The download is larger and may install several utilities |
| Basic driver | Core printing in a smaller package | You only need straightforward printing or have limited storage or bandwidth | It may not include the software required for all scanning, copying, and fax functions |
| Windows built-in driver | Basic print capability supplied through Windows Plug and Play or printer discovery | You want the fastest setup and your model is recognized automatically | Advanced features are model-dependent and may be unavailable |
| HP Print Support Application | An application based on Microsoft’s Print Support App and the Microsoft IPP class driver | Your printer family is one of the select models that HP supports with this application | HP recommends Windows 11 version 24H2 or later for this application |
For a multifunction printer, do not select a basic package merely because it is smaller. HP warns that the basic option may not contain the software needed for every scanning, copying, and faxing function. Conversely, a full-feature package is unnecessary if you only need basic printing and the model listing confirms that the basic driver covers your use.

How to download the correct HP driver from HP
- Open HP’s Software and Driver Downloads page. Use HP’s official support site rather than a third-party driver archive. The page is designed to identify a product before showing available downloads.
- Enter one precise identifier. Type the printer’s product name, product number, or serial number in the identification field. Select the matching result, checking the complete model name before continuing.
- Confirm the operating system. Make sure the page is showing Windows 11, not an older Windows edition. If the page offers an operating-system selector, choose the edition installed on your computer.
- Read every available option for that model. The listing can contain the HP app, HP Easy Start, a full-feature driver, a basic driver, or instructions for using a Windows built-in driver. HP does not publish the same set of options for every printer.
- Match the package to your tasks. Choose a full-feature package when you need scanning, copying, faxing, maintenance, or model-specific controls. Choose a basic package only when core printing is enough and the model page indicates that it supports your Windows 11 setup.
- Download the installer. Save it somewhere easy to find, such as the Downloads folder. Keep the browser window open so you can return to the exact model page if the installer asks you to confirm a choice.
- Run the installer as an administrator if Windows requests permission. Follow the on-screen connection instructions. If it asks you to connect a USB cable, wait until the installer requests it; connecting too early can cause the setup program to select the wrong queue on some systems.
- Print a test page and check the required features. Do not stop after Windows reports that the printer was added. Test printing, scanning, and any other function you selected the package to provide.
Installing with the HP app
HP says that HP Smart and myHP are now the HP app for Windows 11 PCs. The name shown in HP’s current instructions may therefore be “HP app” rather than one of the older names. On a model that supports this route, install the app from the model’s HP download instructions or the Windows app installation route indicated there.
- Open the HP app after installation and allow it to search for a nearby printer.
- Choose the exact model when it appears. If multiple printers are visible, compare the model number on the printer with the result in the app.
- Select USB, Wi-Fi, or wired-network setup according to how the printer is connected. Keep the printer powered on and, for network setup, connected to the same local network as the PC.
- Complete the prompts for driver installation and device registration.
- Sign in or create an HP account if you need the app’s full functionality. HP states that an HP account is required for full functionality; basic device detection or printing availability can vary by model.
- Use the app’s print and scan controls to verify that the functions you need are present. If scanning tools are missing, return to the model’s download page and install the full-feature package instead of assuming the printer hardware is faulty.
Installing with HP Easy Start or a downloaded driver
Some models list HP Easy Start rather than a standalone full package. Easy Start is a guided installer: it identifies the printer, downloads the supported components, and walks you through the connection. The exact screens depend on the printer and Windows 11 version.
Close other printer-installation windows before starting. Running Easy Start while Windows is simultaneously adding the same printer can create duplicate entries, such as two queues with nearly identical names. If that happens, finish one installation, remove the duplicate queue from Windows’ printer list, and keep the queue that prints a test page successfully.

When Windows 11 can install the printer without a download
HP says many printers install automatically when connected by USB or added as a network printer. Windows can supply a built-in driver that enables basic print capability. This is useful when you need to print quickly or when the model’s support page directs you to Windows Plug and Play.
- Turn on the printer and connect it by USB, or connect it to the same network as the Windows 11 PC.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device and wait for Windows to discover the printer.
- Choose the matching HP model and allow Windows to complete installation.
- Print a test page. Then check whether scanning, two-sided options, paper-size controls, and maintenance tools are available.
Automatic installation is not proof that every feature is supported. Windows may add a printer successfully while leaving out HP’s scanning application, fax workflow, ink-level tools, or advanced settings. If a required function is absent, use the exact model listing to install the HP app or full-feature package supported for that printer.
What the HP Print Support Application means
The HP Print Support Application is a separate, narrowly supported route. HP describes it as being based on Microsoft’s Print Support App and using the Microsoft IPP class driver. HP offers it only for select printer families, so its presence in a Windows 11 environment is not a general replacement for every HP driver.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHP lists Windows 11, including ARM64 devices, as supported for this application and recommends Windows 11 version 24H2 or later. Treat that as an application-specific recommendation, not as a requirement that all HP driver packages need 24H2. If your model’s page does not list the HP Print Support Application, use the package or Windows installation method shown for that model.

Troubleshooting common installation problems
The HP page cannot find the printer model
Recheck every character in the product name, product number, or serial number. Remove extra spaces and try another identifier from the printer label. A family name may return several products; select the result whose full model name matches the printer body. If no exact result appears, do not substitute a similar model’s driver, because feature support can differ.
Windows installed the printer, but scanning does not work
This usually indicates that Windows installed a basic built-in driver or that a basic HP package was selected. Return to the exact model listing and look for the full-feature driver or HP app. HP specifically notes that basic packages may not provide all scanning, copying, and fax software for multifunction printers.
The printer appears twice
Duplicate entries commonly occur when Windows Plug and Play and an HP installer add the same physical printer separately. In Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, identify the queue that successfully prints a test page, then remove the unused duplicate. Avoid deleting the only working queue until you have confirmed the replacement.
The computer uses ARM64
Check whether the exact model page lists an ARM64-compatible route. HP lists ARM64 support for the HP Print Support Application, but only for selected printer families. If your model does not offer that application, follow the model-specific Windows 11 instructions rather than installing an x64 package by assumption.

The HP app asks for an account
HP states that an HP account is needed for full functionality in the HP app. If you do not want to use account-linked features, check whether the model page offers a standalone driver or Windows built-in installation that meets your needs. Do not interpret the account prompt as evidence that the printer is unsupported.
The network printer is not discovered
Confirm that the printer is powered on and connected to the same local network as the PC. If Windows cannot discover it, try the model’s HP installer, which may provide a separate network-selection step. If the HP page offers both network and USB instructions, choose the connection that matches the printer’s current setup instead of switching methods midway through one installer.
How to verify that installation is complete
- The exact HP model appears under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- A test page prints with the expected paper size, orientation, and color settings.
- The scanner is visible in the HP app or the scanning workflow you intend to use, if the printer is multifunction.
- Two-sided printing, tray selection, and other required controls appear in the print dialog.
- Only one working queue represents the physical printer, unless you intentionally created separate queues for different connection methods.
If the printer passes the basic print test but fails one of these feature checks, reinstall the model-specific full-feature package rather than repeatedly reinstalling the same built-in driver.
The safest decision for most Windows 11 users
Start with the exact HP model, not a generic “HP Windows 11 driver” search. Let HP’s model-specific page determine which packages exist, then choose the smallest option that still includes every function you need. Use the HP app or HP Easy Start when the model lists them and you want guided setup; use a full-feature package for multifunction work; use a basic or Windows built-in driver for straightforward printing; and consider the HP Print Support Application only when HP identifies your printer family as eligible.
This approach avoids the two most common mistakes: installing a driver for a similar but different printer, and assuming that a successful automatic installation includes scanning or other advanced features.
