Verdict: The HP Portable P500 1TB is a tiny, bus-powered SSD that is adequate for backups, documents, photos and media playback. HP’s current specification rates it at up to 420 MB/s over USB 3.2 Gen 1, while independent tests have measured roughly 256–423 MB/s depending on workload. Buy it only when its price is clearly below modern 10Gbps portable SSDs; it is not a high-performance editing drive.

“1TB” means 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Windows and macOS display less space after decimal-to-binary conversion and formatting, and the exact available capacity depends on the filesystem.
Design and portability
The P500 uses a compact aluminum-alloy enclosure with no moving parts. HP lists blue, red, silver and black versions. Its 79.1 mm length and 45.4 g maximum drive weight make it genuinely pocketable, and it runs from USB power without a brick.

- What You Get - 1 * 500GB Mini SSD, 1 * Type-A to Type-C Data Adapter, 1* Type-A to Type-C Data Cable, 1 * Storage bag
The included short USB-C-to-A cable and separate USB-A-to-C adapter cover older computers, but the adapter is another small part to lose and another connection point to troubleshoot. There is no external activity light or built-in cable loop. Aluminum can become warm during long transfers, while the slim chassis offers less physical protection than a ruggedized enclosure.
HP describes resistance testing for drops, shock, vibration and extreme temperatures, but the cited product page does not provide an IP water/dust rating or a guaranteed drop height. Treat it as a compact everyday drive, not certified rugged storage.
Real-world speed: 420 MB/s is a ceiling, not a promise
Manufacturer rating
HP specifies up to 420 MB/s sequential read and 420 MB/s sequential write for the 1TB model over USB 3.2 Gen 1. Sequential figures describe large, orderly transfers; small files and sustained writes can be slower.

TweakTown measured approximately 376 MB/s read and 276 MB/s write in CrystalDiskMark, and 336 MB/s read and 256 MB/s write in ATTO. Its teardown identified a Silicon Motion SM3350 controller and Samsung NAND in the tested sample. Serious Insights reported approximately 423 MB/s in CrystalDiskMark and considered the drive suitable for backups, documents, image storage and video playback rather than high-end editing.
Do not average these results into a universal speed. Host USB controllers, cable and adapter, filesystem, queue depth, free space, temperature, firmware and hardware revision all affect results. A short benchmark can also finish inside a write-cache burst; a 100GB copy is more revealing.

USB 3.2 Gen 1 versus Gen 2
HP’s current specification identifies the P500 as USB 3.2 Gen 1. Some older reviews, including TweakTown’s, describe the connection as USB 3.2 Gen 2. The labels are inconsistent across documentation and coverage. In practical terms, published results place the 1TB drive in roughly the 250–425 MB/s class, far below modern 10Gbps portable SSDs that can exceed 1,000 MB/s.
Compatibility and formatting
HP lists PCs, Macs, Android devices and gaming consoles, but compatibility depends on the host. A USB-C socket does not guarantee USB 3.x speed; some phones and computers expose only USB 2.0. Phones need USB-OTG support, sufficient power and a file manager that can access external storage. Consoles may require their own format operation, which erases existing data.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Device | Check before use |
|---|---|
| Windows PC | USB port rating, sustained copy performance, safe eject and NTFS/exFAT behavior |
| Mac | APFS for Mac-only use; exFAT for Windows sharing; Time Machine requirements |
| Android phone/tablet | OTG support, power draw, filesystem and file-manager access |
| PlayStation/Xbox | Console formatting rules and game-storage limitations |
| USB-C laptop | Whether the port is USB 3.x, USB4 or Thunderbolt |
| Older USB-A computer | Adapter, cable condition and the port’s actual speed |
For a drive shared between Windows and macOS, exFAT is usually the practical choice. NTFS suits Windows-only use but macOS does not provide native write support by default. APFS is appropriate for Mac-only workflows. Always copy important data elsewhere before reformatting.
Warranty, software and firmware
The official sheet lists a three-year limited warranty and a 500 TBW endurance limit for the 1TB model. TBW is an endurance specification, not a promise that failure occurs immediately afterward, and neither warranty nor recovery software guarantees your data. Regional terms, proof-of-purchase rules and serial-number requirements can differ; use HP’s US support page or regional support portal to check coverage.
The product page lists Biwin Intelligence for benchmarking, migration and cloning, a Biwin recovery utility, and an HP P500 firmware-update tool in the downloads area. Ordinary storage operation does not require these programs. Before any firmware update, confirm the exact capacity and model, make a complete backup, connect directly to a stable USB port, verify operating-system support and do not interrupt the process. The available documentation does not establish a current firmware version or guaranteed speed improvement.

Alternatives and value in 2026
No dependable current US HP direct-buy price or stable in-stock channel was established for the P500; availability varies. Compare the actual price on the day you buy, not an old launch or review price.
| Drive | What it offers | Best reason to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung T7 1TB | Up to 1,050 MB/s read and 1,000 MB/s write; three-year warranty listed. Samsung showed $98.99 sale pricing versus $129.99 listed pricing when checked; recheck availability. | Much faster when prices are close. |
| Samsung T9 1TB | USB 3.2 Gen 2×2; requires a compatible 20Gbps host for maximum performance. | High-throughput video and workstation workloads. |
| SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD | More rugged-oriented design and modern connectivity; captured page showed a back-in-stock workflow rather than a stable price. | Portable durability, subject to verified stock and exact revision. |
| SanDisk My Passport SSD | Up to 1,050 MB/s read and 1,000 MB/s write, with documented 256-bit AES hardware encryption and capacities up to 4TB. | Speed plus a clearly documented security feature. |
USB 2.0 hosts will bottleneck every faster alternative. Conversely, a 10Gbps drive is wasted on a USB 3.2 Gen 1 port, so check the computer before paying for extra throughput.
Troubleshooting
If the drive is not detected
- Try another USB port and remove hubs or docks.
- Test the included cable and adapter separately, then try another computer.
- Check Windows Disk Management or macOS Disk Utility.
- If the drive appears unformatted, do not initialize or format it until recovery needs are assessed.
- Inspect the port, cable and adapter for damage and confirm the host is not USB 2.0.
- Use HP support to identify the product and warranty route.
If it is unusually slow
Check the port generation, cable, adapter, hub, temperature, free capacity and workload. Antivirus or backup scanning can affect copies, and nearly full drives may behave differently. Reconnect and repeat the test before concluding the drive is defective.
If it disconnects from a phone
The phone may lack OTG, provide insufficient power, use an unsupported filesystem, or have a faulty adapter. HP’s Android listing does not guarantee compatibility with every handset.
Quick Recap
Data-safety basics
- Keep at least two copies of important files; an SSD is not a backup by itself.
- Eject the drive before unplugging it.
- Do not treat the recovery utility as a replacement for a backup plan.
- For a definitive purchase review, test sequential and random I/O, 10GB and 100GB copies, mixed small files, warm-drive performance, USB-C versus USB-A, and nearly full capacity while recording the host, filesystem, cable and temperature.
