The HP OmniBook Ultra 16 is a substantial 16-inch Windows creator laptop built around NVIDIA’s RTX Spark platform, with up to 128 GB of unified memory and a 3K OLED display. However, the preview machine was powered off and benchmarks were prohibited, so there is no independent evidence that it outperforms a MacBook Pro.
What the OmniBook Ultra 16 is
HP positions the OmniBook Ultra 16 as a premium Windows machine for developers, creators, gamers and people running AI applications locally. It uses NVIDIA’s new RTX Spark platform rather than a conventional discrete-GPU laptop design. HP’s announced configurations reach 128 GB of unified memory and up to 1 petaflop of FP4 AI performance.

That positioning makes the laptop an attempted alternative to Apple’s high-end creator hardware, particularly for users who want local AI models, CUDA-oriented software and a large OLED screen. It is not yet a proven MacBook Pro replacement: the available hands-on report covered a powered-off sample, not a production review unit.

Hands-on design and ergonomics
Solid, business-like construction
Notebookcheck’s Benjamin Herzig inspected the laptop on October 14, 2026. He describes a CNC-machined aluminum unibody with polished sides, a smooth black finish and high build quality. The shape is restrained and almost ZBook-like rather than overtly gaming-focused.

At 2.2 kg, however, it is a substantial computer to carry. That weight is the first important trade-off against a more portable MacBook Pro configuration. The black aluminum body should suit a desk or studio, but frequent commuters will feel the difference in a bag.
Screen and opening angle
HP announces a 16-inch 3K OLED touchscreen with VESA DisplayHDR True Black 1000 certification. The glass front gives the panel a premium appearance, but the glossy surface can reflect windows and overhead lighting. Herzig also measured an opening angle of roughly 135 degrees, which is more restrictive than many creator laptops when used on a high stand or in cramped seating.

Input, audio and camera privacy
The machine has four speakers and a physical webcam shutter. The haptic touchpad could not be evaluated because the sample was switched off, so its click feel, palm rejection and gesture behavior remain unverified.

Thermal design
A large underside intake feeds two fans. HP says the rear thermal system uses three heatpipes and larger heatpipes in its RTX Spark design, with exhaust directed out of the back. The 20-core RTX Spark version is reported to support up to 70 W of power for the platform. Those are design and vendor figures, not measured sustained-performance results.

Charger and battery
The reported power adapter is rated at 140 W. HP lists a 99 Wh battery and claims up to 17 hours of continuous FHD local-video playback. That figure comes from HP’s own test procedure and should not be treated as runtime for compiling code, rendering video or running an AI model. HP also says the supplied system can reach 50% charge in approximately 30 minutes under its stated conditions.
Connectivity
Ports include Thunderbolt, USB-A, HDMI and microSD. There is no full-size SD card reader, so photographers and video teams using full-size cards will need an adapter or separate reader.

RTX Spark configurations and local AI memory
TechRadar Pro reported on October 9, 2026 that 24 GB and 32 GB versions use a smaller RTX Spark chip, while models with 48 GB or more use the full 20-core Grace CPU and 6,144-core Blackwell GPU. The exact configuration is therefore more important than the OmniBook Ultra 16 name alone.

More memory does not automatically make every AI model run faster. Model size, numerical precision, software support and the amount of GPU resources available all affect whether a workload fits and how quickly it responds. For local AI, 48 GB or more is the sensible starting point for buyers who expect to use larger models; choose 24 GB or 32 GB only when the software and model sizes you use are known to fit comfortably.

Does it beat the MacBook Pro?
There is no defensible performance winner yet. NVIDIA did not allow benchmarks before release, and the preview unit was powered off. Consequently, the available evidence cannot establish application performance, sustained GPU speed, fan noise, display calibration, battery life under comparable workloads or real-world AI throughput against any MacBook Pro model.

The fair conclusion is narrower: HP is targeting premium Apple hardware with more Windows-oriented local-AI memory capacity and RTX software support, while the actual performance verdict requires a powered-on retail unit and repeatable tests.
Price and availability
TechRadar Pro reported RTX Spark laptop preorders starting at $2,599.99, with first shipments scheduled for October 16, 2026. Its listing for the HP OmniBook Ultra 16 with a 3K OLED touchscreen was $3,199.99 through Best Buy. These prices and stock positions are time-sensitive; verify the retailer, country, memory tier and shipping date before ordering.
HP’s September 4 announcement said the Ultra 16 was expected through HP.com and Best Buy in fall 2026, with pricing to be supplied closer to availability. That means two apparently different prices may describe different configurations or moments in the launch cycle rather than a permanent range.
Who should buy it?
Good match
- Developers who specifically need a Windows and RTX software environment.
- Creators who value a 16-inch 3K OLED panel, extensive unified memory and desktop-style connectivity.
- Local-AI users prepared to select a 48 GB-or-larger configuration and verify that their frameworks support the platform.
Reasons to wait or choose differently
- You need independently measured performance before spending premium-laptop money.
- You prioritize low carry weight or a wider display hinge angle.
- You rely on full-size SD cards and do not want an adapter.
- Your workload is mainly battery-sensitive mobile work rather than GPU-heavy creation or local AI.
Verdict
The HP OmniBook Ultra 16 is an ambitious RTX Spark flagship with credible on-paper strengths: up to 128 GB of unified memory, a 3K OLED display, a 99 Wh battery and a cooling system designed around a 70 W 20-core configuration. Its 2.2 kg weight, glossy screen and approximately 135-degree hinge are practical compromises. Most importantly, the hands-on evidence is an inspection of a powered-off sample, so claims that it beats the MacBook Pro remain unproven until independent testing is possible.
