HP OmniBook 5’s 42-Hour Battery Claim: What It Means in Real Use

HP’s reported “up to 42 hours” for the 14-inch OmniBook 5 refers to local video playback—not 42 hours of typical work, web browsing, video calls, or streaming. An independent test found more than 25 hours of video playback on a different, Snapdragon-based OmniBook 5 14, so it demonstrates strong endurance for that configuration but does not verify the newer Intel model’s 42-hour claim.

What HP’s 42-hour figure does—and doesn’t—tell you

Tom’s Hardware reported in 2026 that the 14-inch Intel OmniBook 5 is rated for up to 42 hours of local video playback. “Up to” describes a maximum under a specified type of use, not a promise that the laptop will last that long in every workload. The report identifies local video playback as the basis, but the exact official HP specification page and full test conditions for this configuration were not available here. Tom’s Hardware’s report

Local playback is not the same as streaming video: streaming requires a network connection and can add wireless activity. Nor does a video loop represent a day of mixed work, where browser tabs, documents, background applications, calls, brightness, and power settings change over time.

What independent testing found

PCWorld measured more than 25 hours of video playback in its 2025 review of an OmniBook 5 14. That is an impressive result for the tested device, but it is not a direct verification of the 42-hour claim. PCWorld’s review configuration used a Snapdragon X Plus X1P-42-100 processor, a 59Wh battery, and a 14-inch 1920×1200 OLED display. PCWorld also said HP’s 34-hour figure for that tested laptop did not match its test. PCWorld’s review and test details

The reported 42-hour model is a newer Intel configuration, with a reported 60Wh battery. Different processors and configurations, as well as different test protocols, make a direct hours-to-hours comparison unreliable. The 25-plus-hour result supports a conclusion about the tested Snapdragon model—not the runtime of the newer Intel version.

Why your runtime may be different

Battery life depends on more than battery capacity. HP’s general guidance lists the model and configuration, applications, features, wireless use, power-management settings, and battery capacity loss over time as factors that can affect results. HP’s battery-life guidance

  • Workload: Local video playback, streaming, office work, and video calls place different demands on the system.
  • Display: Screen technology, resolution, and brightness influence power use.
  • Connectivity and settings: Wireless activity and power-management choices can change runtime.
  • Battery condition: Capacity can decline with age and use, so an older laptop may not match its original test result.

How to compare battery-life claims fairly

When comparing advertised or independently tested runtimes, look for the conditions behind the number rather than treating headline hours as directly interchangeable. A useful comparison identifies:

  • the exact model and configuration, including processor and battery capacity;
  • display type and resolution, and the brightness used;
  • whether wireless connectivity was enabled;
  • the workload, such as local video playback or web browsing; and
  • how the test determined the endpoint, such as shutdown or a battery-estimation tool.

Even comparable endurance results do not tell the whole buying story. PCWorld described its Snapdragon review configuration’s performance as adequate but not exceptional, noting its entry-level Snapdragon X Plus chip. Consider performance and configuration alongside runtime rather than choosing on a single battery figure. PCWorld’s review

Don’t mix figures from different OmniBook 5 models

HP Tech Takes gives up to 34 hours and an estimate of 15–20 hours in typical everyday use for a separate 16-inch Snapdragon OmniBook 5 context. Those figures are not specifications for the 14-inch Intel model associated with the 42-hour report. HP Tech Takes’ 16-inch OmniBook 5 context

Older cross-brand battery-life analysis should also be treated as historical context, not a current estimate for this laptop. Laptop Mag reported an average 251-minute difference in an analysis of HP laptops reviewed in 2019; that sample does not establish an error rate for current OmniBook models.
