This review works from those published specifications and the setup conditions HP attaches to them. It does not include measured print quality, scan quality, noise, reliability, or running cost, because no independent hands-on results for this model were available when this was written (October 2026). Where a figure below comes from HP, the article says so.
What the 9720e is built for
HP positions the 9720e for small offices that handle routine office printing and also need occasional large-format pages, such as plans, posters, or wide charts. Its product listing on HP’s US product page covers print, copy, and scan. If your work is almost entirely letter and A4 documents, the wide-format capability is the main thing that separates this model from a standard office all-in-one, and you should weigh it against what you actually print.

Maximum paper size and double-sided printing
HP’s US support specifications list borderless printing up to A3/11×17. Automatic two-sided printing is listed for A4 and Letter paper. The same specification does not list automatic duplex for A3 or 11×17. So the answer to “can it print double-sided?” is yes for A4 and Letter, and not established for A3 or 11×17. If you need two-sided large-format output, confirm that with HP before you buy.

Speed: two modes, two numbers
HP publishes two different speed ratings for this printer. They are manufacturer ratings, not measured results, and they are not directly comparable to each other.
#1 Best Overall
- Epson printing system is designed to be used exclusively with Epson Genuine Cartridges. Use of non-genuine ink could cause damage not covered under the printer’s ltd. wnty.
- High-performance wide-format printing — accomplish more with fast wide-format printing up to 13" x 19"
- High-speed printing — PrecisionCore Heat-Free Technology streamlines workflow with 25 black/12 color ISO ppm and fast first-page-out
- Print-shop quality — DURABrite Ultra instant-dry pigment inks deliver sharp text and vivid colors
- Designed for productivity — engineered for durability, reliability and heavy workloads
| Mode (as labelled by HP) | Rated speed | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Professional mode, black | Up to 22 pages per minute | HP US support specifications |
| Professional mode, color | Up to 18 pages per minute | HP US support specifications |
| General office | Up to 34 pages per minute | HP US support specifications |
When you quote this printer’s speed, name the mode. The 34 ppm figure should not be read as the speed you will see on a typical job.
Paper capacity and monthly volume
- Input tray: 250 sheets, per HP’s US support specifications and the US product listing.
- Output tray: 75 sheets, per HP’s US support specifications.
- Automatic document feeder: 35 sheets, per the US product listing.
- Recommended volume: 250 to 1,500 pages per month, per HP’s US support specifications.
- Duty cycle: HP lists a 30,000-page monthly maximum. HP states this is a ceiling and not a recommended ongoing workload.
A printer rated for 250 to 1,500 pages a month is suited to a steady small-office load. If your monthly volume is far above that range, the duty cycle figure should not be treated as reassurance.
Rank #2
- Sold as 1 Each.
- All-in-one printer gives you printing, faxing, copying, and scanning capability
- Inkjet printer has a resolution that goes up to 4800 x 2400 dpi for excellent readability
- 17 ppm in black/white and 9 ppm in color with a monthly duty cycle of 33000 pages

Connectivity and the control panel
The US product listing names dual-band Wi-Fi and Ethernet, and a 2.7-inch color touchscreen. Those are the only connectivity and control-panel details this review can attribute to HP’s published pages. Check the listing for your country if you need a specific network standard or a particular setup flow.
Cartridges: confirm the family before buying ink
Cartridge family is the detail most likely to lead a buyer to the wrong ink. HP’s pages for different markets name different cartridge numbers for this printer or its close relatives, so do not assume a family from the model name alone.
Rank #3
- PLEASE NOTE — Epson printing system is designed to be used exclusively with Epson Genuine Cartridges; Use of non-genuine ink could cause damage not covered under the printer’s limited warranty

| HP page | Product covered | Cartridges named |
|---|---|---|
| HP US support specifications | OfficeJet Pro 9720e | HP 936 black, cyan, magenta, and yellow |
| HP Ireland product specifications | OfficeJet Pro 9720e (Irish listing) | 937 cartridges; HP lists example yields on this page |
| HP Canada support specifications | OfficeJet Pro 9720 (non-e model) | HP 938 cartridges |
The US product listing uses product number 53N95A. Match that number, or the one printed on your unit, against the cartridge list for your market before ordering. The Canadian entry covers the non-e model, so it is a related product and not the 9720e itself.
Running cost: how to work it out yourself
No cost-per-page figure is established for this printer in this article. HP states that cartridge yields vary considerably with page content and other factors, so a published yield is only a starting point. To estimate your own cost:
Rank #4
- CARTRIDGE-FREE PRINTING — Print lab-quality photos, graphics and creative projects; Get vibrant colors and sharp text with Epson's high-accuracy printhead and Claria ET Premium 6-color inks
- INK BOTTLES — Save on photos1 and creative projects with affordable in-house printing; All-in-one printer allows you to print 4" x 6" photos for about 4 cents each vs. 40 cents with traditional ink cartridges1
- LESS FREQUENT INK REPLACEMENT — Replacement ink bottles don't have to be changed nearly as often as ink cartridges¹; Printer, scanner and copier lets you print up to 6,200 color pages³
- PRINT FOR LONGER — Up to 2 years of ink in the box² (and with every replacement ink set) for fewer out-of-ink frustrations with this wireless printer
- ZERO CARTRIDGE WASTE — Epson EcoTank printer helps reduce the amount of cartridge waste ending up in landfills; Cartridge-free printer uses high-yield ink bottles; Each replacement ink bottle set is equivalent to about 100 individual ink cartridges⁴
- Identify the cartridge family for your market using the table above.
- Find the yield HP lists for that cartridge on the regional specification page you are using. The Irish page gives example yields; check whether the page you use does the same.
- Divide the current local price of the cartridge by that yield to get a cost per page for each color.
- Adjust the result for your mix of text, graphics, and full-color pages, since heavy color coverage uses ink faster than plain text.
HP+ and the conditions attached to it
HP+ is an optional setup choice. HP’s product page states the following:
“HP+ requires an HP account, ongoing connection to the internet, and exclusive use of Original HP Ink cartridges for the life of the printer.”

HP also says the printer uses dynamic security, and that firmware updates may block cartridges that use a non-HP chip. If you expect to use non-HP cartridges, need the printer to run offline, or do not want an account requirement, read these conditions before you buy. The sources reviewed here do not describe the same conditions for setups that do not use HP+, so confirm that with HP if it matters to you.
Warranty depends on where you buy
Warranty terms differ by country, and HP’s regional pages describe different routes.
| Market | Warranty as described by HP |
|---|---|
| United States (HP US support specifications) | One-year limited hardware warranty, extendable to two years with the HP+ offer |
| Ireland (HP Ireland product specifications) | Requires HP+ activation and separate registration; HP describes coverage for up to three years |
Check the offer in your own country before you buy, and keep the registration confirmation that applies to your route.
Is the 9720e worth buying?
The specifications support a clear use case, but this article cannot settle value. It has no current regional price for the printer or its cartridges, and no independent test results for print quality, speed, reliability, or noise. The fit check below is based on what HP publishes.
- It fits well if you regularly print A3 or 11×17 pages and your monthly volume falls within HP’s 250 to 1,500 page recommendation.
- Think twice if you need double-sided A3 or 11×17 output, because HP’s listed duplex support covers A4 and Letter only.
- Check the conditions first if you plan to use non-HP cartridges, need offline operation, or are sensitive to account requirements, since HP+ carries those terms.
- Before you buy, confirm the cartridge family and product number for your market, compare the local price of the cartridge against HP’s stated yield, and read the warranty offer for your country.
If those checks come out in its favour, the 9720e is a reasonable candidate for a small office that needs wide-format output without a separate large-format machine. Whether it performs well in your setting is a question the published specifications cannot answer.
