What the P1606dn driver does
A printer driver lets Windows convert documents into instructions the LaserJet P1606dn understands. The package may also add status reporting, configuration utilities, network discovery, and maintenance options. A basic driver already included in Windows can be enough for plain printing, but it may omit advanced status or administration features that come with HP’s full solution.

The P1606dn can be installed over USB or across a network. The installer presents different choices for those connections, so select the connection type that matches the way the printer is attached. A network installation normally requires the printer to be powered on and connected before the installer searches for it.

- Windows edition and architecture: Confirm whether the PC runs Windows 10 or Windows 11, and whether it is 64-bit. Open Settings, choose System, then About to view the Windows edition and system type.
- Connection: Decide whether you will use a USB cable or the printer’s network connection. Keep the cable available for a USB setup; for network setup, have the printer connected and note its IP address if your router or printer control panel displays one.
- Administrative access: Sign in with an account that can install software and drivers. Save open work because Windows may restart the print spooler or request a reboot.
- Existing installations: If the printer appears several times in Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners (Windows 11) or Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners (Windows 10), note which queue is currently used. Removing an obsolete queue later can prevent documents from being sent to the wrong entry.
- Security software: Keep normal antivirus protection enabled. If an installer is blocked, verify that the file came from HP before temporarily adjusting a security setting, and restore the setting immediately afterward.
Download the official HP package
- Open HP’s LaserJet Pro P1606dn Software and Driver Downloads page.
- Use the operating-system selector. The page currently offers selectors for Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10, and 11. Choose the edition and version actually installed on the computer, not the version used by another PC.
- Review the results for a full solution or a printer-specific driver. Prefer that package when it is listed because it normally supplies more of the printer’s supported features than a basic in-box driver.
- Download the executable to a folder you can find, such as Downloads. Do not rename the file while it is downloading; an incomplete download can fail with a generic extraction or signature error.
- Right-click the downloaded file, choose Run as administrator if Windows requests elevated permission, and follow the HP setup screens.
HP does not expose a fixed package version on the current model page, so the available files can change. Check the live selector each time you reinstall instead of searching for a supposedly permanent version number.

Choose the right package when several appear

HP describes UPD as a multi-printer driver. It is not automatically equivalent to the P1606dn’s full solution, particularly for device-specific status or administration functions. Select it from HP Customer Support after entering the printer name and verify compatibility on the live page.
Install over USB
- Leave the P1606dn powered on. Start the HP executable and accept the license and destination choices.
- When the setup asks how the printer is connected, choose USB.
- Connect the USB cable only when the installer requests it, unless the on-screen instructions specify otherwise. Windows should detect the printer and continue copying the driver.
- Allow the installer to finish. Do not unplug the cable or switch off the printer while files are being registered.
- Print a Windows test page from Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners (Windows 11) or Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners (Windows 10), open the P1606dn queue, choose Printer properties, and select Print Test Page.
Install over a network
- Connect the printer to the same local network as the Windows computer and turn it on. A wired network connection is normally configured through the printer’s network connection; the installer cannot discover a powered-off device.
- Run HP’s downloaded installer and choose Network when prompted.
- Let setup search for detected printers, or enter the P1606dn’s network address when the wizard offers an address field. Compare the displayed model and address with the printer you intend to install.
- Continue through the wizard and allow it to create the network print queue. If Windows Firewall asks whether to allow the HP setup component on your private network, approve it only if the network is trusted.
- Print a test page. If the page prints but status information is missing, check whether you installed a basic driver instead of the full solution.
HP’s installation guidance also mentions an Auto Firmware Downloader notification. If it appears, allow the firmware update to complete and do not power off the printer during the process. Firmware is separate from the Windows driver, but the installer may offer both operations in one workflow.

Update an existing P1606dn installation
Use HP’s current package
Download the package for the exact Windows version from HP, close applications that might be printing, and run the installer. If it detects the existing P1606dn, choose the update, repair, or replace option offered by the wizard. Keep the same USB or network connection selected unless you are intentionally moving the printer to a different connection.
Check Windows Update
Windows can supply a generic printer driver when HP does not list a model-specific package. In Windows 11, check Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates; Windows 10 uses a similar Optional updates area. Install a driver only when the entry identifies HP and the printer model or clearly matches the detected device. Restart the print queue and test-print afterward.

Refresh through Device Manager
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, or Universal Serial Bus controllers, depending on how Windows categorizes the device.
- Right-click the P1606dn entry, choose Update driver, and let Windows search automatically, or point it to the HP package you already downloaded.
- If the update leaves a duplicate or malfunctioning queue, remove the unused queue from Printers & scanners and add the printer again with the correct connection.
Windows 10 driver on Windows 11: what to expect
Do not assume that a Windows 10 package is guaranteed to work on Windows 11. Start with the Windows 11 selector on HP’s page. If no Windows 11 package is shown, HP’s page states: “If your operating system is not listed then HP may not provide driver support for your product with that operating system.”
A Windows 10 package may install on some Windows 11 systems because both use the modern Windows driver framework, but compatibility, signing, and feature support depend on the particular package. Treat successful installation as something to verify with a test page and the features you need, not as a promise from the model name alone. If HP lists a Windows 10 package but no Windows 11 package, try the Windows 10 file only after checking the installer’s stated requirements; if it refuses to install, use Windows’ basic driver or a compatible UPD entry instead.

If HP does not show a P1606dn driver
- Reload the model page and reselect the exact Windows edition and version. The selector is dynamic, and changing the selection can reveal or hide packages.
- Check the HP Universal Print Driver listing for Windows 7, 8, 10, or 11. Confirm the P1606dn is supported and that USB or network printing and any required status features are included.
- Use Windows’ Add printer workflow or Windows Update to look for a detected HP device. A generic driver can restore basic printing even when advanced controls are unavailable.
- Do not choose a Microsoft Update Catalog result solely because it is labeled HP. Catalog search results include generic packages dated 2023, 2025, and 2026, but those dates do not establish P1606dn compatibility. Select a catalog item only when Windows or the package documentation identifies the model.
- If none of these paths provides the features you need, record the exact Windows build, connection type, and error message before contacting HP support. Those details determine whether the limitation is a missing package, a network discovery problem, or an installation failure.
Troubleshoot common installation failures
Installer cannot find a USB printer
- Try a different USB port and remove hubs or docking stations temporarily.
- Confirm the printer is powered on and that Windows shows a USB connection sound or device notification.
- Cancel the wizard, restart Windows, and run the HP executable again. Choose USB only when prompted.
Network printer is not detected
- Verify that the computer and printer are on the same local network, not separate guest and private networks.
- Print or view the printer’s network configuration to confirm its current IP address; addresses can change after a router restart.
- Use the installer’s manual address option if automatic discovery fails, then print a test page.
Documents remain stuck in the queue
- Open the P1606dn queue and cancel pending documents.
- Restart Windows’ print service by restarting the computer, then send a one-page test document.
- If multiple P1606dn queues exist, set the known-good queue as default and remove obsolete duplicates.
Printing works but advanced options are missing
This usually indicates an in-box basic driver or a UPD configuration rather than the full model-specific solution. Return to HP’s selector and install the full solution or printer-specific package listed for your Windows version, if available.
The installation fails after a firmware notification
Do not interrupt a firmware update in progress. Wait for the printer to return to its ready state, restart the computer, and rerun the installation if the driver did not register. If the printer remains unresponsive, note the exact panel message before seeking HP support.

Verify the finished setup
- The P1606dn appears once, with the intended USB or network port, under Windows printer settings.
- A Windows test page prints without an error or a long queue delay.
- The printer’s status and configuration features match the package you selected.
- After a Windows update, print again; a major update can replace a vendor package with a basic driver.
Toner is separate from the driver
The compatible black cartridge for the P1606dn is HP 78A, part CE278A. HP’s current product information gives an approximate yield of 2,100 pages; actual yield varies with page coverage, print settings, and other usage conditions. Installing a driver does not supply toner or increase cartridge capacity.
