HP 62 or HP 62XL: how to choose
Choose standard HP 62 black when your use is occasional
Standard capacity is reasonable if you print only a few pages at a time, use the printer seasonally, or want to minimize the amount of ink purchased upfront. It also avoids buying more capacity than you are likely to use before the cartridge reaches its recommended storage or use period. Choose HP 62XL black for recurring document work

Label the result as an estimate. It will change with coverage, page size, print mode, cleaning cycles, and the type of documents you produce.
Check the cartridge number before ordering
- Read the installed cartridge. Open the printer’s cartridge-access area and note the number printed on the label before removing anything. If the cartridge is unavailable, check the printer’s supplies screen or the documentation that came with the unit.

- Turn on the printer. Leave it powered so the carriage can move to the replacement position when the access door is opened.
- Open the cartridge-access door. Wait for the carriage to stop moving before touching the cartridges.
- Remove the empty cartridge. Press or release its retaining tab as indicated by the cartridge shape, then pull it out without forcing it.
- Prepare the new cartridge. Remove only the protective packaging and the sealing tape. Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles.
- Install the replacement in the matching position. Slide it into the slot until it clicks securely. Black belongs in the black position; tri-color belongs in the color position.
- Close the access door and follow the alignment prompt. If the printer asks for an alignment page, print it and place it on the scanner glass exactly as shown on the display.
- Print a test page. Check that black text is even and that color blocks contain all expected colors before starting a large job.
If the printer does not recognize the cartridge, do not repeatedly run cleaning cycles. First remove and reseat the cartridge, verify that all protective tape was removed, and confirm that the number and regional version match the ENVY 7645.
Diagnosing common print problems
“Cartridge not recognized” or compatibility warning
- Power the printer off, wait briefly, and turn it back on.
- Remove and reinstall the affected cartridge so it is fully seated.
- Inspect the contacts for packaging residue or visible contamination; avoid touching them with your fingers.

- Keep an unopened cartridge sealed in its original packaging until needed.
- Store cartridges upright in a moderate indoor environment, away from direct sunlight and heat.
- Install a replacement soon after opening it; leaving the print nozzles exposed can allow ink to dry.
- Do not shake, squeeze, or scrape the cartridge.
- Use the printer regularly if possible. Long periods without printing can increase the need for cleaning and alignment.
