Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThe HP ENVY 6165e is a capable fit for light home printing, occasional copies, and single-page scans—but its small-yield cartridges, slow output, and lack of an automatic document feeder make it a poor match for frequent printing or scan batches. Its convenience is most compelling when you value duplex printing and phone-friendly connectivity more than low running costs.
What the HP ENVY 6165e does—and who it suits
The 6165e combines printing, copying, scanning, and mobile fax in a compact home inkjet. HP lists dual-band Wi-Fi, USB 2.0, a 2.4-inch color touchscreen, automatic two-sided printing, and a 100-sheet input tray. AirPrint, Mopria, Wi-Fi Direct, and the HP Smart app provide ways to print from phones and other devices, according to RTINGS. HP’s specifications are listed on its product support page.

HP gives the printer a recommended monthly volume of 100 to 400 pages. Its separate maximum duty-cycle figure is up to 1,000 pages per month; that is an upper limit, not a recommendation for sustained monthly use. The distinction matters: this is intended for modest household workloads, not as a high-volume workhorse.
RTINGS’ assessment describes print quality as adequate for everyday documents, though text can sometimes look faint or crooked. It found good detail in casual photo prints, but photos may appear too bright and colors are not especially accurate. Scans are detailed and have neutral colors. Those findings make the 6165e a general-purpose home device, not a specialist choice for photo fidelity.

Speed, scanning, and everyday convenience
HP’s datasheet specifies ISO-rated speeds of up to 10 pages per minute in black and 7 pages per minute in color. Those are manufacturer ratings, not a guarantee of the pace a household will see. RTINGS characterizes real-world output as slow and cites about eight pages per minute in its review summary. For a few pages at a time, that may be tolerable; long print jobs will take patience.
The flatbed scanner has an HP-listed optical resolution of up to 1,200 dpi and supports originals around letter/A4 size. The important practical limitation is that it has no automatic document feeder and does not duplex-scan. Each page in a multipage document must be placed on the glass individually, so it is best suited to occasional single sheets, receipts, or photos rather than stacks of paperwork. HP’s setup and user guides cover the device’s installation and operation.
What ink does the HP ENVY 6165e use?
The printer uses two cartridges: one black and one tri-color. HP lists the following nominal yields in its 6165e datasheet:

| Cartridge | HP-listed nominal yield |
|---|---|
| HP 68 Black Original | Approximately 160 pages |
| HP 68 Tri-Color Original | Approximately 120 pages |
| HP 68e EvoMore Black | Approximately 320 pages |
These are manufacturer-listed yields, not a prediction of exactly how many pages a particular household will print; HP notes that actual yield varies with content and other factors. The EvoMore option is a higher-yield black cartridge, but there is no corresponding high-yield tri-color option listed for this configuration.
Because cyan, magenta, and yellow are combined in the tri-color cartridge, it is not possible to replace just one depleted color tank. The cartridge may need replacement when one color runs out, even if the others still contain ink. The HP 68e EvoMore Black can reduce black-cartridge replacement frequency for text-heavy households, but it does not address the color cartridge’s relatively low nominal yield.
Is the HP ENVY 6165e expensive to run?
It can be, especially if you print often or rely on color. RTINGS identifies poor page yield and high cost per print as major drawbacks. Its review summary reports about 140 black-and-white pages per standard black cartridge in testing, while the detailed yield tables are restricted; it does not establish an exact color yield or a reliable per-page cost from the available summary. That tested black result is separate from HP’s nominal 160-page figure.

Loaded with features to print high-quality photos, homework, office docs and everything else. It's also AI-enabled to intuitively adapt to your workflow, with wireless and security features that keep your multifunction printer up to date and secure.
- PERFECT FOR HOME - The HP Envy Photo 7975 is great for printing documents, high-quality true-to-screen borderless photos, creative projects and more. Print speeds up to 10 pages per minute color, 15 pages per minute black.
- PERFECTLY FORMATTED PRINTS WITH HP AI - Print web pages and emails with precision-no wasted pages or awkward layouts; HP AI easily removes unwanted content, so your prints are just the way you want.
- KEY FEATURES - Print, copy, scan, automatic 2-sided printing, advanced photo features, separate photo tray, auto document feeder, mobile and wireless printing.
- EFFORTLESS PRINTING - Smoothly navigate printing with a large intuitive printer color touchscreen.
The practical implication is more important than a single page-cost estimate: frequent printing means replacing cartridges often, and the combined tri-color cartridge can add waste when one color is depleted first. HP says the 6165e is eligible for Instant Ink, but plan terms, pricing, and any trial or bundle depend on the current local offer. Check HP’s terms for your region before treating a subscription as a way to lower costs.

RTINGS warns that inkjet nozzles can clog if the printer is left unused for long periods. It notes that the cartridges include printheads, so a cartridge replacement can also address clogging at the cartridge. This does not remove the inconvenience or cost of keeping an inkjet ready for intermittent use; if you print only rarely, factor in both the possibility of maintenance and ink consumption.
Connectivity is a stronger point. Along with Wi-Fi and USB, RTINGS identifies AirPrint, Mopria, Wi-Fi Direct, and HP Smart app support. That gives typical home users several routes from a phone or computer, although current operating-system compatibility should be checked against the relevant HP support information before purchase.

6165e model and bundle details to verify
RTINGS identifies the 6165e as a North American Best Buy variant in the ENVY 6100e series, in white, with product code 714L6A. The series can have different model numbers depending on retailer, region, and color. RTINGS describes the reviewed bundle as including six months of HP+, while HP’s datasheet also advertises a six-month Instant Ink bundle. These are volatile promotional details, not assurances about a current listing. Check that the retailer’s SKU is 714L6A and confirm exactly which bundle, if any, is included.
How it compares with other home inkjets
RTINGS names the Canon PIXMA TR7120 and Brother MFC-J1205W as alternatives and rates the Brother more favorably for page yield and long-term running cost. That is RTINGS’ comparative assessment, not a live-price comparison; current cartridge costs and local availability can change the value equation. When comparing models, focus on the following differences:
- How many pages you expect to print monthly and the likely cost per page.
- Whether replacement cartridges are available in higher-yield versions for both black and color.
- Real-world output speed for the size of jobs you typically print.
- Whether you need an ADF or duplex scanning for multipage documents.
- Whether casual photo detail is enough, or accurate color is essential.
- Compatibility with your devices and preferred phone-printing platform.
Verdict: Should you buy the HP ENVY 6165e?
Choose the ENVY 6165e if you want an all-in-one for modest home use, value automatic two-sided printing and mobile connectivity, and scan mostly one page at a time. Look elsewhere if you print frequently, need quick output, handle multipage scan batches, or want lower ongoing ink costs. Its convenient feature set is real, but it does not make the cartridge economics or scanning limitations disappear.
