That makes “battery life king” a claim about the publication’s test results at the time—not a guarantee for every owner or a current ranking. The same review flagged the display brightness and graphics-driver maturity as drawbacks, while WIRED raised separate concerns about performance and value.
How long does the HP EliteBook Ultra G1q battery last?
HotHardware reported 20 hours of video playback from its review unit. The page does not give a complete playback protocol, so treat that as a result observed by the review team, not a runtime promise or a number directly comparable with every other battery test. HotHardware’s page 3 review was published August 23, 2024.

HP’s September 2024 product brief lists a 59 Wh battery and claims up to 26 hours for a specified Snapdragon X Elite configuration: X1E-78-100, 16 GB LPDDR5x memory, 512 GB SSD and a display set to 200 nits. HP cautions that actual battery life varies with configuration, software, power-management settings and other conditions. That manufacturer figure uses its own stated setup; it is not the same test as HotHardware’s reported playback result. HP’s product brief and HP’s specifications and battery-life information provide the qualifications.
WIRED reported 17 hours and 20 minutes in a full-screen YouTube test at maximum brightness, describing it as the best Windows battery result in that reviewer’s testing at the time. Different brightness and playback procedures mean the WIRED and HotHardware figures should not be read as a head-to-head comparison. WIRED also found the screen too dim even at maximum brightness. WIRED’s 2024 review gives its test context.

What did HotHardware find inside?
HotHardware’s teardown starts with four Torx T6 screws. After removing them, the reviewer used a prying tool to separate the bottom shell. The review describes a compact cooling system and a limited but useful upgrade path:
- Cooling: One fan, a fin array and a plate with two heat pipes.
- Battery: 59 Wh.
- Storage: A user-replaceable M.2 2280 SSD.
- Memory: 16 GB LPDDR5x soldered to the board in the reviewed configuration, so it is not a user upgrade.
These details describe HotHardware’s reviewed machine; configurations and service details can vary by market and SKU. The review overview identifies its unit as the X1E-78-100 Snapdragon X Elite model with a 14-inch 2240 × 1400 display and a 512 GB SSD. HotHardware’s review overview supplies that configuration context.

How hot and loud did it get?
After looping 3DMark Wild Life Extreme for about 15 minutes, HotHardware measured a hottest surface area of 102–103°F (about 39°C). Its sound meter registered no more than the 30 dBA room floor from 18 inches away; at about three inches, it measured 40–42 dBA. Those are the review team’s readings under its stated setup, not a guarantee for other workloads, environments or units. The thermal and acoustic measurements are on HotHardware’s page 3.
What are the review’s main trade-offs?
Battery life and portability
HotHardware’s conclusion praised portability, quiet operation and the 20-hour playback result. Its author, Ben Funk, wrote: “Add to all of that the best battery life we’ve ever tested in a laptop and you’ve got a winner.” That is the publication’s judgment based on its own testing up to August 2024, not a claim that the G1q leads every laptop today. The reviewed configuration was listed at a usual $1,699, with sale sightings around $1,500 at the time; those are historical prices, not current offers.

Display and graphics
HotHardware wanted a brighter display and more mature graphics drivers. WIRED’s separate experience reinforces the screen concern: it found the display too dim at maximum brightness. If you regularly work outdoors or in bright rooms, screen visibility deserves particular attention rather than relying on resolution alone.
Performance, compatibility and value
WIRED’s 2024 review gave the laptop a 6/10 assessment and criticized performance and value. With a Snapdragon processor, check whether the applications and peripherals you rely on run well on Windows on Arm—especially x86-only software and graphics-heavy workloads—and whether current driver support meets your needs. The cited reviews do not establish present-day compatibility for every application or a current market-wide performance ranking.

Who should consider this laptop?
The G1q is most compelling for someone who values low weight, quiet operation and long unplugged video playback, and whose essential applications work reliably on the system. It is a less certain fit if you need a bright screen for demanding lighting, maximum graphics performance, guaranteed support for particular legacy software, or strong value at any price.
Before choosing a configuration, verify its processor, memory, SSD, display and local availability. HP’s September 2024 brief also covers an 8-core Snapdragon X Plus G1q8 variant as well as a 12-core Elite configuration, so do not assume every product listing matches HotHardware’s X1E-78-100 review unit. For a fair comparison with another laptop, use the same workload and brightness where possible, then weigh software compatibility, ports, upgradeability and the actual price you can buy at.
