In HotHardware’s 2018 test, the EliteBook 840 G5 lasted about an hour longer than the 830 G5 under sustained load. Both review units showed occasional temperature spikes and throttling, but the reviewer said their cooling systems generally kept temperatures below levels that would hurt performance. Those results describe two specific configurations—not every laptop sold under either model name.
What HotHardware tested
Chris Ledenican’s review, published July 17, 2018, compared two premium configurations with a quad-core Intel Core i7-8650U, 16 GB of DDR4 memory, and a 512 GB SSD. The 830 G5 had a 13.3-inch FHD touchscreen; the 840 G5 had a larger 14-inch FHD display without touch. Both review units used Intel UHD 620 graphics and had Thunderbolt USB-C, HDMI 1.4b, Ethernet, and a 50 Wh three-cell battery. The 840 G5’s chassis is larger. Those specifications should not be assumed for used listings. HP’s 830 G5 product page documents, for example, a configuration with a Core i5-8250U, 8 GB of memory, and a 256 GB SSD. A separate TechRadar test of the 840 G5 used a Core i7-8550U and described multiple display options. Check the processor, memory, storage, and exact screen on the device being offered rather than relying on the model name alone. HP’s 830 G5 product information and TechRadar’s 840 G5 review illustrate that configurations vary.

Which model lasted longer on battery?
The tested 840 G5 ran about an hour longer than the tested 830 G5 in HotHardware’s reported sustained-load comparison. The 830 G5 lasted just over five and a half hours in that test, placing it lower in the review’s comparison group; the 840 G5 was around the middle. These are results from the review samples, not a guaranteed runtime for other configurations or used machines. HotHardware’s battery-test section reports the results and methods.

For its battery comparisons, HotHardware calibrated the displays to approximately 115 lux and used Battery Eater Pro as well as an in-house 1080p video loop. The loop played 1080p video at a stated 16 Kbps bit rate, with playback repeated and one-minute breaks. Because display brightness and hardware affect runtime—and battery capacity declines with use—the figures are best treated as a comparison between those two review units, not as a prediction for a particular listing.
How do they handle heat and fan noise?
HotHardware observed occasional processor temperature spikes and throttling during sustained work. It also reported that the thermal systems generally kept core temperatures below levels where performance would take a hit, while acknowledging that long, demanding workloads could reduce performance. That does not mean either model always throttles or is silent.

The reviewer described the 840 G5 as having slightly less fan noise and fan speed, suggesting its larger chassis was less thermally constrained. This is a review observation about the tested laptops, not a guarantee for every configuration or a controlled acoustic measurement. The review’s overall verdict identified battery life as the main downside and emphasized that runtime varies with hardware and display brightness. HotHardware’s final analysis provides that context.

- Choose the 830 G5 when: its 13.3-inch size is the priority and the specific listing has the screen and configuration you want. The reviewed unit had a touchscreen, but do not assume every 830 G5 does.
- Choose the 840 G5 when: you prefer a 14-inch display and a larger chassis. The 2018 review sample had a non-touch FHD panel; other configurations may differ.
- For sustained workloads: regard the review’s heat and fan observations as a useful indication, not a promise of performance under every workload. Check that the processor and cooling condition of the actual machine meet your needs.
- For desk or dock use: verify the ports on the exact laptop and the requirements of your displays and charging setup. HotHardware’s units included Thunderbolt USB-C and HDMI 1.4b; TechRadar also noted a proprietary side-docking connector on its tested 840 G5. HP lists a USB-C Dock G5 as an option for the 830 G5, but check compatibility and display, power, and dock specifications before buying. HP’s 830 G5 product page includes the dock reference.
When comparing older or refurbished units, give particular attention to the exact panel, touch and privacy-screen options, battery condition, and configuration. A product-family name alone does not establish that a listing matches either review sample.
