Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe HP DeskJet 4120e is a sensible choice for occasional home or personal printing: a compact colour inkjet that copies, scans, and sends mobile faxes, with a flatbed and a 35-sheet document feeder. It is not built for a busy shared office. Its rated speed, 60-sheet input tray, and HP’s recommended 100 to 300 pages per month point to light, intermittent use. Duplex printing is manual, and the ink you need depends on the country where your printer was sold. Those two points decide whether this model fits your habits more than any feature on the box.
What the HP DeskJet 4120e is built for
HP describes the 4120e as a thermal inkjet multifunction printer for printing, copying, scanning, and mobile fax sending. It is a consumer device. Its paper path, tray sizes, and duty rating all sit at the level of a home desk or a small home office, where a few dozen pages a week is normal and the printer is shared by a handful of people at most.

The useful question is therefore not whether the feature list is long. It is whether the printer’s capacity and rated speed match how much you print, whether manual duplex suits the documents you produce, and whether the ink costs in your country are acceptable.

What the speed and volume ratings mean in practice
A rated speed of 8.5 pages per minute in black is a best-case figure measured under the ISO A4 conditions HP uses. A 10-page report prints in roughly the time it takes to make a cup of tea, but colour pages at up to 5.5 pages per minute will take noticeably longer, especially for graphics-heavy documents. Neither figure has been verified by an independent lab in the sources available for this article.
The 60-sheet input tray means you will reload paper regularly if you print more than a few dozen pages in one session. The 25-sheet output tray is similarly small, so lengthy jobs can overflow it unless you use the output extension. These limits are consistent with HP’s recommended 100 to 300 pages per month. Print volumes above that range are where a shared household or a small office would start to feel the constraints. The 1,000-page monthly duty cycle is a ceiling for the device, and it is not a signal that the model is designed for heavy regular use.
Duplex printing and the document feeder
Manual duplex
The 4120e does not print on both sides automatically. HP lists duplex printing as manual, so you print the odd-numbered pages first, then turn the stack over and reload it so the second side lands on the back. Most desktop operating systems and HP’s printer software guide you through this with prompts. Expect extra handling for longer documents, and check the page order in the preview before you start a large job.

The 35-sheet ADF and two-sided originals
The automatic document feeder holds 35 sheets, which makes it practical for copying or scanning multi-page letters, forms, and receipts without placing each page on the glass. The flatbed handles single pages, photos, and bound material. HP’s published specifications do not describe the feeder as scanning both sides of a page in one pass, so plan on feeding double-sided originals with that in mind rather than assuming a single-pass duplex scan.
Wireless setup and mobile printing
HP lists Wi-Fi support for 802.11a/b/g/n and a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port. Mobile printing works through the HP Smart app, Apple AirPrint, Chrome OS, and Mopria. That covers most phones, tablets, and laptops a household is likely to use, without a driver install on each device.
Mobile fax is send-only. You can send a fax from a mobile device through the printer, but the 4120e cannot receive faxes this way. Borderless printing is not available, so photo prints will have a white margin.

Ink: which cartridge your printer takes
Cartridge compatibility depends on the market. HP’s supplies pages list different cartridge families for different regional configurations. The same printer name can be sold with a different ink family in another country, so the product number on the printer or its packaging is the reliable identifier. Compare that number with HP’s local supplies compatibility listing before you buy.
| Market and configuration | Black standard | Black XL | Tri-colour standard | Tri-colour XL |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HP Belgium specification, product 26Q90B | HP 305, about 120 pages | HP 305XL, about 240 pages | HP 305, about 100 pages | HP 305XL, about 200 pages |
| HP Uruguay specification | HP 67, about 120 pages | HP 67XL, about 240 pages | HP 67, about 100 pages | HP 67XL, about 200 pages |
The page yields above are HP’s approximate figures for each listed regional cartridge. They are not guaranteed page counts for your own documents, and they do not describe how the yield was measured. Treat them as a basis for comparison between the standard and XL cartridges, not as a prediction of how far a cartridge will take you.
Do not buy by model name alone. A “305” in one country and a “67” in another are different supplies, and a listing that says the cartridge fits “DeskJet 4120e” without a regional qualifier is not enough. Confirm the cartridge number against the product number on your printer.

Ink cost and HP Instant Ink
HP’s support page marks the 4120e as eligible for Instant Ink. This is a subscription that delivers ink based on a monthly plan, and HP’s data sheet describes it as a paid monthly service whose price depends on the plan you choose, with possible overage fees if you exceed the plan’s page allowance. Availability and plan prices differ by country, and the terms change, so check the current local conditions on HP’s site before you sign up. This article does not quote a plan price.

- ICON LCD – Print your basic documents with ease from the intuitive control panel

Whether a subscription or buying standard and XL cartridges works out cheaper depends on your monthly page count and on local cartridge prices. Compare the two at your own expected volume rather than assuming one route is always cheaper.
What independent testing does and does not show
The main public independent source for this model is CHOICE, the Australian consumer organisation. Its public listing shows a listed price of A$120, labels the model as discontinued, and repeats the claimed speeds, a 60-sheet tray, A4 as the maximum paper size, and A4 as the scan size. Its expert rating and detailed results, including print quality, speed, ink waste, page yield, and reliability, are members-only. The A$120 figure is the price shown on that listing. It is not a current price, and it should not be read as the printer’s street price today.
Because those detailed results are not publicly accessible, this article cannot report independent findings on measured print quality, measured speed, noise, reliability, or cost per page. The manufacturer’s speed and yield figures are claims. If you need evidence on any of those points, check whether an accessible test report exists for your country and read its methodology before relying on it.
Checking the 4120e against other printers
If you are comparing this model with another home all-in-one, use the same questions for each. An unqualified “best printer” label hides the trade-offs that matter.
- Duplex: does the printer duplex automatically, and does its feeder scan both sides of a page?
- Volume: how many pages do you print each month, and does the printer’s recommended volume and paper capacity cover that?
- Ink: what is the cartridge family for your country and product number, what does it cost locally, and what is the manufacturer’s page yield?
- Connectivity: which devices need to print, and do you need wireless or mobile printing, or is a USB connection enough?
- Independent results: is there an accessible test for print quality, speed, reliability, and ink use, and does its methodology match your needs?
- Total cost: what does the printer cost in your market, and what would your ink or an optional subscription cost at your expected volume?
Who should consider the HP DeskJet 4120e
- People printing a few hundred pages a month at most, mainly text documents with occasional colour pages.
- Households that want to print, copy, and scan from phones, tablets, or laptops over Wi-Fi.
- Users who can accept manual duplex and who scan multi-page paper using the ADF.
Heavier users, shared offices, and anyone who needs automatic duplex, borderless photo prints, or fax reception should look at other models.
The Bottom Line
The HP DeskJet 4120e suits occasional home printing with a wireless, mobile-friendly workflow and tolerance for manual duplex. Check the cartridge family for your country before buying ink, and weigh the total cost at your own volume rather than the listed price alone.
