How ZachXBT Says He Infiltrated an Alleged $1B Lazarus-Linked Crypto Laundering Network

ZachXBT says he posed as a crypto customer in 2025, exchanged stablecoins with a contact using the alias “Jimmy Green,” and gathered information that helped identify Bybit-linked fund movements. He alleges the network moved more than $1 billion across exploits linked to Lazarus Group. That total and the network’s alleged role are his claims, reported by news outlets—not an independently verified accounting.

What ZachXBT says he set out to investigate

After the February 2025 Bybit exploit, ZachXBT says he noticed at least 15 accounts in public Telegram and Discord groups seeking help with orders he associated with stolen funds. He contacted several accounts, including one using the Telegram alias “Jimmy Green,” according to CryptoSlate’s October 5, 2026 report.

In his October 5, 2026 disclosure, ZachXBT characterized the target as a Chinese organized-crime syndicate that had laundered more than $1 billion across multiple exploits for Lazarus Group. The figure describes the alleged network’s activity across multiple incidents; it is not the amount he says he traced in the Bybit-related cluster.

How he says he built trust with the contact

According to CryptoSlate and The Block’s October 6, 2026 report, ZachXBT funded a new Ethereum address with 349,700 USDC on March 6, 2025. He then exchanged USDC on Ethereum for USDT on Tron with the contact and continued placing orders to build trust. He said he accepted a 5% loss per order; the reports do not quantify his total net loss.

ZachXBT says the contact discussed moving funds associated with the Bybit exploit before some of those movements took place. One receiving address provided by the contact, he said, was funded by a wallet directly traceable to exploit funds and appeared on Bybit’s public blacklist. These details are reported as part of his account, rather than as independent confirmation of the contact’s identity or role.

What he says the on-chain trail showed

CryptoSlate reports that ZachXBT matched a screenshot of a cross-chain transfer to a THORChain order created within minutes. He said three Solana addresses supplied by the contact helped him identify a cluster of more than $12 million in funds he linked to the Bybit exploit, moving through Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and Tron.

That reported cluster is a tracing claim, not a statement that all of the funds were recovered. CryptoSlate and The Block separately report that Tether froze 442,000 USDT linked to the cluster. The reported freeze is substantially smaller than the cluster’s reported value and should not be treated as a freeze of the entire cluster.

A separate conversation about a 2024 freeze

ZachXBT also described an earlier episode involving a claimed freeze of roughly $300,000. He said the amount matched an on-chain freeze of 332,000 USDC tied to the 2024 Poloniex exploit. This is a separate incident from the reported 442,000 USDT freeze linked to the Bybit-related cluster.

What authorities have said about the Bybit theft

The FBI’s attribution of the Bybit theft is distinct from ZachXBT’s later account of a laundering network. The Associated Press reported on February 27, 2025, that the FBI had attributed the February 21 theft of approximately $1.5 billion in crypto from Bybit to North Korean-linked hackers. The agency described the activity as TraderTraitor and also referred to Lazarus Group. AP reported the FBI’s statement that the actors were converting stolen assets and dispersing them across thousands of addresses on multiple blockchains: Associated Press coverage of the FBI announcement.

That official attribution supports the context that U.S. authorities linked the Bybit theft to North Korean actors. It does not independently establish that Jimmy Green’s identity is known, that the alleged network laundered more than $1 billion, or that every transaction ZachXBT discusses belonged to the same group.

What is established—and what remains an allegation

Question What the reports say Evidence status
Who stole from Bybit? The FBI attributed the theft to North Korean-linked actors, using the label TraderTraitor and referring to Lazarus Group, as reported by AP in February 2025. An official U.S. government attribution, reported by AP.
Who was “Jimmy Green”? ZachXBT says he exchanged stablecoins with a contact using that alias. The identity behind the alias is not independently established in the cited coverage.
How much did the alleged network launder? ZachXBT alleges more than $1 billion across multiple exploits linked to Lazarus Group. The full total is not independently verified in the cited coverage.
How much did he say he traced in the Bybit-linked cluster? More than $12 million across multiple chains, according to his account. A reported tracing claim; it is not the same as a recovery or freeze.
How much was frozen? Tether reportedly froze 442,000 USDT linked to the cluster. A separate reported freeze, not the entire cluster.

ForkLog’s October 6, 2026 translated report reproduces ZachXBT’s summary of his approach: “Posing as a client, I gathered intel that helped action freezes for the Feb 2025 Bybit exploit and attribute illicit activity onchain.” The wording is his description of the investigation’s impact, not an independent determination of every claim.
