Its new protagonist, Bryan, faces scarce ammunition and healing supplies, worsening threats, and a journey through the world of Resident Evil 2. That makes the film a clear departure from earlier Resident Evil movies that leaned more heavily on action spectacle—but it is not evidence that Cregger’s approach differs from every video-game adaptation.
Resident Evil tells a new story in a familiar game world
Sony Pictures describes the 2026 film as an all-new story directed by Zach Cregger and written by Cregger and Shay Hatten. Its official synopsis follows Bryan, a medical courier caught in a race for survival during a disastrous night. The film is listed as playing in theaters; availability depends on location and date. Sony Pictures’ official film page gives its theatrical release date as September 18, 2026.

In an interview published April 30, 2026, by PlayStation Blog, Cregger says he set the story broadly in the world of Resident Evil 2, during the Raccoon City crisis, but chose a different character and mission rather than retelling Leon’s story. He said repeating a plot the games had already told well would feel redundant. Cregger allows for “a couple of little shifts for dramatic license,” so the setting should be understood as a creative adaptation, not a claim of an exact game-to-film timeline.

It translates survival-horror mechanics into cinematic tension
A vulnerable protagonist instead of an established hero
Cregger describes Bryan as an ordinary person without particular combat ability. The idea is to place the audience closer to the experience of an average player thrown into danger than to that of a seasoned action hero. The Atlantic’s September 2026 feature describes Bryan making rookie errors as the situation worsens, reinforcing that less-capable perspective.

Scarcity shapes the journey
Cregger says he built the film around movement from one point to another through changing environments, with escalating threats along the way. Limited bullets and healing supplies, injury, and the need to manage resources are central to his description of the games’ appeal. He also points to weapon progression—from pistol to shotgun to MP5—as a design element the film carries into its story. As he put it to PlayStation Blog, “I wanted to do a movie that was following a character from point A to point B, because that’s what those games do so well.”
The Atlantic connects those choices to the suspense of entering a new space with little ammunition. In this reading, the journey is not just a sequence of action scenes: each encounter puts pressure on what Bryan can afford to spend, and on whether he can make it through the next stretch.
Game details remain, even when the plot is new
Cregger says he carried over healing-item details and added visual and thematic Easter eggs. Those recognisable objects and mechanics give fans points of connection without requiring the film to reuse the games’ central characters or storylines. GameSpot’s May 1, 2026 report likewise summarizes the approach as a new story that retains the setting, journey structure, mechanics, and Easter eggs.
The clearest contrast is with earlier Resident Evil films
The Atlantic contrasts Cregger’s comparatively grounded, vulnerable-player perspective with the seven earlier Resident Evil films, which it characterizes as more action-forward: conspicuous automatic weapons, supernatural abilities, vehicle stunts, and large volumes of gunfire against zombie waves. Against that series history, Bryan’s limited resources and ordinary-person mistakes mark a noticeable change in emphasis.

- In San Francisco, Jill Valentine is dealing with a zombie outbreak, Leon Kennedy is tracking a kidnapped DARPA scientist and Claire Redfield is investigating a monstrous fish. Joined by Chris Redfield and Rebecca Chambers, they discover the trail of clues from their separate cases all converge on Alcatraz Island, where a new evil awaits their arrival.
That comparison is specific to the Resident Evil film series. It does not establish that all other video-game movies share one action-heavy formula, or that Cregger’s film is unlike every adaptation. A fair comparison with any game-based film would ask whether it invents its plot or adapts a known one, how capable its protagonist is, whether tension comes from scarcity and navigation or from spectacle, and how it uses the source game’s lore and mechanics. The available evidence supports those questions about Cregger’s choices, not a verdict on the entire genre.

Cregger’s adaptation keeps the setting and tactile logic of survival horror while giving Bryan a new route through the Raccoon City crisis. The result, as described by Cregger and interpreted by The Atlantic, aims to make limited resources and unfamiliar danger drive suspense. That is the film’s strongest supported distinction: not that it overturns a universal rule for video-game adaptations, but that it shifts Resident Evil away from the action spectacle associated with its earlier films and toward the vulnerability of playing the games.
